SG Crew are ashamed of SG-1?

I would counter that Emmerich is well known.....I dont know how many films he's directed but he must be respected enought to get jobs in major motion pictures (esp after Godzilla :( ).

Your remark about Spader is ironic for me as all I have seen is the movies where he is a good guy (mostly his very early stuff).

No offense, but there is a reason that Godzilla took a dive at the box office - IT STANK!!! If you're saying that Emmerich is well known for MOVIES THAT STINK (with one exception), I agree with you.

I was thinking re: Spader's recent stuff.

HIdy!

Stargate - movie vs. Series --

i saw the movie and didn't really like it much - (was on a Kurt Russell kick at the time) the concept was okay, but something about it kinda bothered me - maybe i thought it moved too slowly, then, i heard that there was going to be a series AND i found out that RDA was gonna be in it - here i was excited, until i found out he was gonna play the part that Russell played in the movie (didn't like Kurt's Jack) -- i was depressed -- but, my friend taped the first season for me (3/4 of it anyway) and after the 1st ep - i was hooked!! (had a lot to do w/ RDA!) --

anyway - i'm not a Spader fan, so i kinda like Shanks' Daniel better -- tho he annoyed the heck out of me for the 1st season or so -- he was really 'science-y' all the time - almost like they were hiding his personality or something - and he almost always had to disagree w/ Jack -- it was irritating, but Shanks put his own spin on Daniel, and Daniel has become a wonderful character -

i like that the series has branched into all realms of history and not just stayed w/ Egypt - i like Egypt, but i think it would have limited the show if they had only used Egypt's 'gods' and such --

and - i agree with Willow - tho the movie may not have been the greatest thing to grace the silver screen, it did give a great basis for an excellent tv series that we now can enjoy --

Highlander II

Ditto, Highlander II!

And back to Mr. Emmerich - isn't he responsible for "The Patriot"?

I have to say that 50% of that movie was truly excellent - editing, writing, camera work and cast (the actor playing Colonel Tavington (sp) makes evil look like a successful line of work), was amazing. Unfortunately the other 50% looked as if it was thrown in at a late date; even part of the score is really bad.

I wonder what happened? [I love watching actors from other countries playing Americans, particularly in historical venues; it fascinates me]

Willow, the movie lacks the character development when compared to the series primarily because there was a lot more time to go deeper into the characters' backrounds, personalities, and interactions. If they tried to establish Jack's "give a damn" attitude and "strange" sense of humot they could have easily had him come off as foolish or a bit of an ass. While Jackson had a fair amount of development he's also been "fleshed out" a lot (so to speak).

I watched the whole 1-4 seasons of Stargate before I found out it originated with a movie. I never watch movies if I've already got into a show, e.g. Nikita, Buffy, FX the series etc. (never seen the original movies) but my friend rented Stargate the other day so I watched it. I have to admit the whole time I was trying to picture our TV guy as the actors, but all in all I thought that the TV show fit itself really well with the movie. Many shows don't correspond to the movies.

Of course nothing beats the show & the growth of the characters. I love our Danny-Boy Shanks growth especially. I think they did a good job as he starts off as the annoying scientist who doesn't know where he fits in, but as the seasons role by he does pick up Jack habits. I believe somewhere in there Daniel actually does say "gee i've been hanging around jack to much" or something to that effect.

Personally, I'm a Carter fan.

I thought it was a shame Sam wasn't in the film, but now I see it was kind of a blessing.
It allowed the writers to create a female character (and of course Tealc) for a television show, without having the set backs (such as established character backgrounds) like Jack.

Then again, a tv series has the possiblity and right to adapt from the movie, such as a film does from a book.

Just thinking out loud there. ;)

i don't know if he was responsible for "The Patriot" or not (could look it up, but i'm too lazy right now) -- but liked that movie - tho, you're right, some of it could have used a boost/some help -- and seeing actors from other countries as americans is no more odd than seeing americans playing historical figures of other countries -- (some are better than others as always) -- but it is amusing when certain actors don't get dialect and speech patterns quite right (no, i don't have a specific example off the top of my head - well, not a specific bad example - i have numerous examples of actors who 'get it right')

AGREED - I think Sam's character would have suffered distinctly had she been in the movie.

I think it must be interesting for Brits to play Americans - our country is so young by comparison to theirs - I wonder if they see the experience differently than we do?

[I'm terrible with epy names] In the epy Shanks directed - wow! Daniel certainly has it in him to be evil, given a reason!

yeah, i agree with Norita about daniel insulting independence day but it never occurred 2 me 'til now.:alienooh:

They could be jealous of it's success.

They have been fairly successful themselves though, but making large amounts of money isn't the same thing as making great movies.

This is Emmerich's filmography as a Director:

Patriot, The (2000)
Godzilla (1998)
Independence Day (1996)
Stargate (1994)
Universal Soldier (1992)
Moon 44 (1990)
Hollywood-Monster (1987)
Joey (1985/II)
Arche Noah Prinzip, Das (1984)
Franzmann (1979)

How many have you heard of? I know lots of you like ID4, I don't, except the tongue-in-cheek humour. Universal Soldier is memorable. Moon 44?? What about the rest??

i've seen 3 on this list -- Stargate, Patriot, and ID4 - hated ID4 - stupid stupid movie (don't like Goldblum - he bugs me) -- Stargate was okay -and Patriot was pretty good - haven't seen the rest tho -- and probably won't given the Emmerich track record ---

I've heard of all of them since 1992 but the only half decent one was ID and even that was quite awful! I've never seen Universal Soldier but my dad reckons that its the most boring film ever!

If i'm thinking of the same flm, Universal Soldier was gross, one had this thing for cutting off the ears of the people he killed & wore them on a chain around his neck...

I said that I didn't like ID4 in the movies forum, and I was immediately jumped on by everyone saying how good it is.

Universal Soldier is Jean Claude Van Damme as a Cyborg. Lots of death, actual bodily harm and destruction. Many people like that.

Someone said that Moon 44 had the same plot as a more recent, more popular film, but I haven't seen it, and I haven't seen The Patriot either -- any good?

ya, that was the Universal Soldier I was thinking about, icky. I like the Patriot with Mel Gibson. It was bloody at times, but well done.

Sounds like the Buffy episode 'Pangs' with the Native American guy cutting off 1 of his victim's ears 2 get revenge 4 the things done 2 his people by the Settlers from Europe!
