SG Crew are ashamed of SG-1?

Re: SG movie guys ashamed of the series

Oh my goodness! I totally missed that dig. ID4 was great for the cars flipping over cgi. But long before I saw it I heard the critism that it was Star Wars all over again.

Yes. It's possible they threw that line in to be nasty. But season one SG-1 is lacking a tiny bit in pop-culture refrences. I think they just tried one out to see how it felt.

I also looked strangely at my TV during the cometary when the movie producers said 'were not the guys responsible for the TV show' twenty-five times in a row. And for them to wonder why the graphics carried over was incredible. Keeping so much the things the same on the TV show would be called a hommage to the film. So why would they critisize? They had done such a fine job. And they said they fought to keep as much humanity in the film as possible.

I have to admit the whole time I was trying to picture our TV guy as the actors, but all in all I thought that the TV show fit itself really well with the movie. Many shows don't correspond to the movies.

I do the same thing. It's quite a bit distracting. I should just sit back and enjoy the movie. I find myself accepting that the different men are really the same guys fairly easy. I'm highly critical and was schooled in theater. Replacing a character with another actor happened in a few productions. Happens more in bigger theaters, IIRC. In one case we had one guy on Wednesdays and Sundays and the other on Thursday to Saturday. Another, where we replaced four at the end of a twelve week run and went for another four months. I had lots of chances to watch and watch the stagemanager give the nightly performance notes to the cast. If they were straying, they were told.

I've been in rehersals where directors and actors hash out characters, so that even if the two actors have a different spin, the character fits as the first actor did the role at critical points. Actors have a bit of a say in how they arrive at what the director wants. Having watched the movie and then the first season DVD set in order, I really see MS pulling Spader's mannerisms in from the movie the first few eps and, maybe by now I've seen too many later eps to be unbiased, it was a bit forced and unnatural. But, I'm looking for it so I might not be the best judge.

Oddly, I have less trouble with O'Neill. Or, I wasn't looking. We do stick with Daniel Jackson in the movie. Movie O'Neill spent a lot of time fighting. We have a certian perception in or minds of what a military guy will be like. And it sticks. Hmmm. I might have to go back and watch the movie and first two eps again. I sort of just accept that O'Neill came back from the cold, dark place in his heart and since the humor is there in greater measure that's the result. If any difference moviewise vs. early eps is that Jack was dumbed down. I often have a bit of trouble believing that it was the same guy who arrived at the idea of putting the bomb on Ra's ship at the same time Daniel did.

the humor aspect of O'Neill (which is spelled O'Neil - one 'L' in the movie) is a direct result of RDA saying he would do the part but only if he could add some of his own 'humor' to the character - Jack in the movie was very dark -- and, i suppose one could conclude that by the time the series began (which is supposed to be 1 year after the destruction of Ra) - Jack has crawled out of that dark hole where he wanted to kill himself and moved on with his life -- ie: perhaps he wasn't always so dark, he changed after the trip through the gate -- but we may never know the 'true' reason for the 'transition' -- and just have to accept the fact that he's a 'changed' man ----

(my personal opinion - i like RDA's Jack better - i wouldn't watch the series if he was like Russell's Jack)

They have been fairly successful themselves though, but making large amounts of money isn't the same thing as making great movies.

This is Emmerich's filmography as a Director:

Patriot, The (2000)
Godzilla (1998)
Independence Day (1996)
Stargate (1994)
Universal Soldier (1992)
Moon 44 (1990)
Hollywood-Monster (1987)
Joey (1985/II)
Arche Noah Prinzip, Das (1984)
Franzmann (1979)

How many have you heard of? I know lots of you like ID4, I don't, except the tongue-in-cheek humour. Universal Soldier is memorable. Moon 44?? What about the rest??

8 stinky
1 good, good fodder for a great series
1 not bad (with excellent authenticism in weaponry)

re:Highlander 2

I never thought about this b4 but in the stargate episode with the reporter in D.C. Jack said that there was another Colonel O'Neil with 1 'L' who didn't have his sense of humour. I wonder if that was an in-joke about Jack O'Neil in the movie?

that's a good point. Wasn't his name spelled with ony one L in the movie? Me thinks yer on to somethin'

movie and show

I first saw the pilot for SG-1 about a month ago when a friend loaned me the DVD, then rented the special edition movie on VHS.

I had not seen the movie in theaters because I got the impression that it was a horror and gore flick from its preview.

After watching CotG, I figured the movie couldn't have been all that bad, so I'd sit through it.

I think somebody messed up their marketing... I would now love to see it on the big screen.

I liked Spader's Jackson, as well as the actors that played Sha'Uri and Yasuf. Darned good acting, and difficult language! And I chuckled quite a bit that Ferreti was played by the nutty guy from Third Rock.

So, I ran right out and bought both the special edition movie and the season 1 boxed set...

I had hoped for more special features and directors commentary on the movie DVD. The pair doing the commentary didn't seem to have really prepared or thought back all that much about filming the movie before sitting down to talk while watching it.

But I *like* the movie. The look and feel of Abydos is very well done. Although the Mastadge is pretty gross with that tongue - ukgh!

I *really* like SG-1... and I agree, bringing in Carter in the pilot was a smart move.

I was kind of hoping for less of a glossy-marketing slant on the special features for season 1's DVDs...

I haven't seen any of the more recent seasons, as the region 1 DVDs are slower to be released than molasses running uphill... but there are plenty of fanfic plotbunnies hopping around in season 1 to keep me busy until the season 2 DVDs finally show up (whenever *that* will be...); besides, I've now got two other friends who have made a pact with me not to spoiler themselves until we're all watching season 2! There's safety in numbers...

it's in the episode Secrets (season 2) -- and that's our current assumption -- that it's a poke at the movie -- but we're not 100% sure -- (that's 'we' - the fans i've heard discuss it - and i throw myself in b/c i watched the movie and *looked* for it!) -- but - that's what we're thinking ----

oh - and as far as 'catching up' on the episodes -- adele.s -- there's a site - gammaquad, i think, that has 'em online - graphics/picture not the best - but you can get the general idea and know what's going on until the DVDs are released --- -

Interesting. Before I saw the movie, Entertainment Tonight was on the set when they filmed the part outdoors where Daniel is supposed to kill the others in front of Ra's followers; the thousands of extras were there. It was a great prep for the movie.

I liked Spader, too (and Shanks). It's one of the few things I like that Spader has done. I really liked the actors that played Shau'ri and her father. I agree about the set for Abydos - it was fantastic!

I wonder how much the candy bar company had to pay to be in the movie as much as it was? :)

IIRC -- the guy that plays Kasuf in the movie, is also the guy who plays Kasuf in the series -- (gotta check out IMDB) -- and Alexis Cruz played Skaa'ra in both the movie and the series ---

other than that -- i think they're all different ---- (which is fine - i like Michael Shanks better as Daniel anyway -- not a big Spader fan)

and RDA is my baby -- i'll take him over Kurt Russell anyday! ;)

Skaara's Actor

Is it just me, or does it seem like Skaara's actor has not aged at all between the movie and the series?

I've only seen season 1, but still...

Wonder if he's got a sarcophagus stashed someplace...

KID being the operative word. What is he, about 19? Aphosis and Teal'q are both 20-something.

Question

Would anyone get a symbiote if it allowed you live for 100s of years? You'd share your body with a good little snake, of course.
