I just want an "HONEST" answer, WHY IS TEALC ALWAY THE BABYSITTER IN MOST OF THE "FANS FICTIONS I READ?.........what I am trying to state is, most of the fans's fictions I read, Tealc is only there to WATCH OVER DANIELJACKSON or JUST BE IN THE BACKGROUND,OCCASIONALY SPEAKING, OR WORSE STILL, HE NOT EVEN MENTION. I ALWAY THOUGHT HE WAS "PART" OF THE TEAM. ...............maybe I am drinking to much coffee to explain myself clearly.............................(sky and others who do the T-man excellently in stories, I wish there were MORE OF YOU :rolly2:

I agree with you, coffeecup. I've been thinking about this ever since skydiver introduced me to fanfic and got me hopelessly addicted. I've read an awful lot of fics, and you're right. Teal'c is often barely in them.

I kinda think the problem is that (looking at the show from a real-world p.o.v.) Teal'c isn't a very 3 dimensional character. The character mostly exists to provide exposition - he explains all things goa'uld and system lords to the audience. Beyond that he's mainly a foot soldier &, yes, babysitter. All the episodes that have focused on him (Blood Ties, Family, Crossroads) have closed stories (that is, no dangling threads). His back-story is very basic and straighforward. I think this makes it hard for both fanfic writers and tv writers to develop him like he could be.

But I have to say, when I read the topic, I had this image of Teal'c babysitting Cassie and a bunch of her pre-teen friends, dealing with 10 girls on a sleepover or something. Yeesh!:rolly2:

I agree that Teal'c isn't a very three dimensional character and the only real passion we've been allowed to see is a very negative one - that of revenge.

I think that maybe you have to dig deep into the human psyche for the reasons. For example, as humans we're taught to mistrust anything which is different from us, we're taught to fear not being in control of ourselves. Most people spend the whole of their lives being afraid to be who they really are because they might make people fear or despise them. It's a deep seated hangup of our species, and it's why we bully, torture and kill those who are weaker. The animal kingdom does often weed out the weak or the sick, but they don't do it for pleasure. Humans do. In fact we're the only species who kills for pure pleasure.

This is why the writers of shows appeal tp our liking for the wholly human, and encourage our hatred of that which is different or alien. It's a moral stance taken by society.

Teal'c falls in the middle. He's neither human nor Goa'uld. But because the writers have to follow some political correctness, they can't show him as having too many human characteristics because that would be giving him approval. The same applies for the other species in the show.

Giving him a life, or a romance, or even showing him having an interest in a pretty female airman would be to suggest that he's as good as a human. And that can't be. Not because you guys wouldn't be able to take it on board, but because there is a whole viewing public who want their goodies to be very good and their baddies to be very bad. Characters like Tea'lc who fall between two camps are just tolerated.

And people mostly buy into the whole thing, hence a proliferation of fanfics about Sam/Jack, Sam/Daniel, Janet/Daniel, but very few people wish to write in depth about Teal'c, not because they don't like the character, but because they don't think of him as being 'quite human', therefore attributing romantic characteristics simply doesn't occur to them. Teal'c to them is not a romantic character.

Yet as far as I am concerned, he, The Goa'uld and the other alien species hold far more romance for me than any of the SGC humans. Teal'c could be an immensely romantic character if someone would only put him in that position. Even if you did it from the POV of his past life as a Jaffa and First Prime to a System Lord. God..... think of all the stuff he would have seen and done.....

I think the possibilities for someone like Teal'c are infinite...

And I don't even particularly like the character!!!

Hey Coffeecup,
I think you know my opinion on why there aren't many fan fics that mention the T-Man except to have him babysit. The comparison I made between him and Leonard Nemoy's Mr. Spock character still stands. The fans went nuts for the seemingly unemotional Spock. FanFic proliferated. The ficers that write T-Man really well get into the character and don't get disturbed that he is Black...and alien. Some just are intimidated by the fact that he is so stoic. Many people are unconsciously put off by these facts and feel unable to write for a Black, alien and stoic person because of many reasons.... little cultural contact, political correctness, fear of fan reaction et cetera. Also, some of the writers for the show had him doing the same thing... you know the perfect Black Servant (because they were intimidated, unknowing about many things and other things including prejudice) about writing for an empowered and empowering Black, alien and stoic man. I just gotta say, "Hi, we are here and we don't bite....much!"
Little old lady loving this topic! And the T-Man!
Girl, have you read skydiver's latest fic about him... did you feel the energy surges (hot flashes) in Florida! Hey, T-Man still doesn't use Viagra when he is with me! The ficcers at this forum are pretty good about writing for the T-Man....Have you checked out Skip's last few (I won't even mention MGB or Gemmie here... )But SGP (the hysterical SD-1) and Teal'c 's (our T-ted) funny football game do him proud.... and there are three new up .. one on Jack and one on Daniel and one about Sam. Sam kinda gets over looked here because of our crazy sexual preferences for the Guys (Hey most of us are girls) and it is nice to read one about her! We will see how the newbies develop the T-Man!

Thanks JSC,ANNI,SHILOH for understanding what I was trying to say......and all of you are "Correct", at least I am beginning to understand why there aren't that many fictions with him.................and Jsc, you are correct, the ASCIFI'S MOB does understand us and Tealc............... :naughty:

I really do think that the Ascifi Mob are the best for doing Teal'c because there's such a lot of very diverse understanding and knowledge of the characters in amongst them. Even if they don't particularly go for a character they try to understand the dynamics and are a sympathetic group, even if they do take the mickey frequently!

Personally I do think it's a shame that Teal'c gets a bad deal in the fic....

I would LOVE to see one from his point of view, probably before SG1 preferably.

Teal'c the teenager.... bless him. He was probably killing for his God by the time he was 16.....

:D

Interesting. I've tried to include Teal'c as much as possible in every fic I've written, but have to confess that he wins the top spot for most difficult to write! Both he and Sam cause me to break out into a cold sweat, to be honest.

I don't know what it is, but he's hard. (Take that how you want!!)

There are those of us that are trying...not always successfully. I like a good team fic, and you can't have that without Teal'c!

I understand and agree, Coffeecup.
That's why if i write him i put him where he can do the most good, with me. LOL;) :D

Hey, Buttercup!

You admitted you had a problem iwth both Carter and Teal'c! I think that you did them well. Be proud! You gave them both time and will get better at it as you write more. You faves are obviously Daniel and Jack and you have spent the most productive time thinking about them. Don't worry if you work it will come!

I'm glad you said that, jsc! I really do like all the characters, but Jack and Daniel are just easier to write. Sigh. And I'm a confessed Daniel-freak...sucker for the prettyboys, I guess.

Working on a Teal'c POV story right now and I'm struggling, let me tell you! It'll get there eventually.

Buttercup

Fantastic! I am glad that you are trying to write for either the two you have the most difficulity with. That takes courage! I applaud you efforts! (and of course your good taste!);)

This was a similar thought i had also, but upon reflection of it, i just melt to think of him holding a cute little baby in his arms as if he were holding a breakable piece of crystal. To me he couldn't be anymore sexy than at that moment. Just my opinion.

And Buttercup I eagerly await your Teal'c fic.

Yes, a wonderful picture and so very very tempting!
My brother-in-law used to borrow my son to make inroads into places he would otherwise have a little more difficulity getting in. Babies and big men are the big "Awww, how wonderful " ticket. People just sort of melt...especially the females of our species. For Many REASONS! Had a friend who used to borrow his sisters' littlest and go hunting on his campus for chicks.... did he get dates.!!.. but he also loved babysitting his little neice so there was no real conflict... She came first and the t. numbers and names came second.... close but second!:rolly2: :rolly2:

My best friend used to do the same. Have even had guys do the same to me, but if i wasn't interested in them i paid more attention to the baby, because i just love babies (LOL especially other peoples, just kidding, love them all), and brought more attention to the child, but still conversing with him and therby all parties were happy. ;)

Can't say I've had those experiences, but I do get glances when I take my grandson Jack out. I think they're more for him though because he's so beautiful.....

It can be strange and pleasant when people mistake him for my little boy though!

Especially when I know I can hand him back to his mom and dad!

:rolly2: :D

Anni,
I get the reverse. They look at Asgard and then at me and say,
"You know your GRANDSON looks so much like you!"

It is even worse when I got out with my twin brother and my son.
The look at Asgard then at my twin and me and always ask my twin if it is his son or grandson after they say how much Asgard looks like him!
:rolly2: :rolly2:

Kinda going back to topic here. Without giving any spoilers, I think that the Season 5 episode "Threshold" will help a lot in making Teal'c a more vibrant charcacter, at least in fanfic. This episode filled in his backstory, and made him a more complicated character.

Well it's certainly not before time either.... he's been left in the desert as a character for far too long and needed a bit of fleshing out...

  :rolly2:

jsc....... My eldest son Lee gets mad when people ask him if I am his wife! He ended up with a bald patch at quite an early age and it makes him look a lot older than 30!

I just have a giggle about it, and then he gets mad with me, and his brother teases the life out of him. It just struck me..... 30 and 26 and they still behave the way they did when they were kids!

:rolly2: :rolly2:

you're right coffee, folks to ignore teal'c. and i think it's just because they can't crawl into his head. me personally, i tend to make danny a doorstop part of the time cuase i jsut can't crawl into his head. teal'c...sure. when i do him i just look at things like i'd never seen them before, then drag out the thesaurus and find the 'proper' way to say stuff. also the guy's 102...he's seen a lot so for all his niavete he's incredibly wise as well

sam...big words, but she keeps a lot inside. it ain't easy being a girl in a man's world (though big guns do a lot to even he score)

jack...take some one who's world wise and a little weary, who's likely seen more than he wants to and has learned that life doesn't have to be serious...but can kill you wiht his bare hands in 2.3 seconds in 11 different ways

danny...i have a hard time wth him. i don't see him as poor abused danny, or the team punching bag...and i tend to ignore him (much to the dismay of my beta who adores him)

Skydiver, you did him well in 'Covenant". I just don't like him as the poor wide-eyed innocent who gets whumped or the tripping fool... I think you caught my thoughts of him just perfectly!
