Looking for a jacket...

now there's an idea who's time has come. or what about a stinging or local anesthia that they could hit them with and incapasitate them with? Somewhat like what stun guns do, but maybe more practical?

It would be hard to resist if your arm or leg goes numb or stings like blazes. And gosh no more riots about the police shooting some poor black teen for being a stupid teen and resisting arrest.

I wonder why police didn't start out using tranquilizers in the first place. How did bullets come about...or I guess technology of creating teranquilizers came long after bullets? Just my early morning brain slugging away at thoughts, don't mind me.

gun ramble

I suppose it's a distance and power factor. Bullets don't miss too often. And I guess you do have an OD risk. And gang members have guns. So, police have to have guns.

In the ideal world in my head, I'd like to think police would have more than one option.

Taanqs vrs bullets

An officer does have several means at his disposal up to the use of 'deadly force'. Chemical deturants [ever been 'pepper sprayed'? I have -husband misjudged the wind when he was teaching me and I've been CS a lot of times thanks to the Army], riot batons, various 'come-alongs' and hand to hand methods. It's when it reaches the 'felony assult' stage that you have often run out of options.

An IM [intermuscular] tranq takes up to several minutes to cause an effect - dangerous time where the perp is still armed and able to commit harm. Also, so folks just don't respond... like a PCP OD.

There have been studies on just how far away a perp can be, weapon out [in the studies it was a knife most often] running at the officer and the officer still having time to pull his side arm and use it effectively. At 1/2 half the average city block, there's a 50-50 chance the officer will not be able to get off and effective round due to the 'see -evaluate threat vrs no threat - draw - aim -fire' proticol they are taught.

The perp usually could care less about innocent bystanders.

So... when faced with a 'armed threat' situation where the officers and/or civilian lives are in jepordy, there's really only one, sure way to stop the situation.

Fire until the threat is nutrulized. And believe me... training on the range does *not* really prepare you for the first time you draw and fire on a live being. You can program all the right motions and responses, but the adrenline spike and 'fight-flight' response... there's no way to mimic those in training.

This is a lesson Desert Storm taught me. One I wished I never had to learn.

I think I've lived in TV land all my life. I'm sure the trank scene in Foothold makes you as crazy as me. Doh!

Of course, I forgot that in RL tranks would'nt work so fast as other stuff.

I guess what we forget when we are spoon fed 11o'clock news stories about police shooting people with cell phones thinking they are weapons is that there's a whole chain of events that had to go south pretty fast to lead to that result.

As for pepper spray, I had avoided any mishap with the stuff until someone dropped and broke a ampule of the stuff in the bathroom (After the fact that's the only thing I could think it was.) I skirted around the unsightly puddle. Little did I know, that however it had gotten on the floor, it had also floated in the enclosed space and covered door handles all over the room. I got back to the office one confused camper. As I had gone down the hall I'd rubbed a hand on my nose and lip and was very alarmed by sensations I didn't expect... I'm sort of glad I hadn't been a good samaritan and cleaned it up. :dead: Or, rubbed my eyes more.

yup had pepper spray. Some idiot in highschool decided to pull a prank. I think our best solution would be to get ahold of some zat guns.

pepper spray

Husband went to demonstrate it's effectiveness on a couple of dogs that had gotten into our back yard and would leave. They were making enough racket and bearing their teeth, so we thought this might be a good idea.

Do you know that when you open a door, you completely change the dynamics of air flow *into* a house?

Yep, you guessed it. He 'gassed' our roommate and me. :dead:

Pepper Spray

When I was working nights, I decided to buy mace as protection. A NYC police officer suggested I get pepper spray instead because it worked faster and laster longer than mase. I've never had to use it, but my cousin, who was visiting me, got into an argument with a girl over some man and used it on her. The girl had an asthma attack and had to be taken to the hospital. scary stuff!

Pepper spray

Yep... it can have serius side effects and should be used with caution and only as a last resort to trying to be polite and talk your way out.

Give up your purse or wallet... no material item is work injury or death.

But if you have to draw whatever weapon you may carry, remember: Do so *only* if you plan to follow through and use it. *Don't* use it as a threat. *Don't wave it around to make a point.

Be physically and mentally capable of using it or don't carry it. I can give a false sense of security and get you into even more trouble.

And always be aware of your surroundings. It's called 'tactical awareness' and is your most important weapon.

If you do own pepper spray and find you need to use it, aim for the center of the face. Put them down on the ground... now ... and then run like hell to a safe zone [open store, a crowd of people, things like that] and call the police.

If you own a gun and find you have hit your last resort - it's that our your opponant will seriously harm/kill you - aim for the center of mass [chest/belly], don't try to 'wing them'. Keep firing until they go down. Do *not* approach them. Do call or have someone call the police for you. Retain your weapon and do not leave the scene. When the police arive, lay the gun at your feet and raise your hands so they can tell you're not carrying.

And be ready for the possibility the police will also want to take you downtown to sort things out.

Remember, nothing material is worth a life. A life, however, is.

Important!!!!

And it goes without saying... check the weapons laws where you live. Some states/cities woun't allow a civilian to carry pepper spray, some will but you need a special permit.

The same with handguns. Check and see what the laws are concerning a 'CCW' {Carry Concealed Weapon} or 'CWP' {Concealed Weapons Permit} and find out what is considered under the state ruling as a legal weapon to carry concealed.

Like... in just about all states, a shotgun with a barrel shortened below a certain length is a big *No-No*. {Don't laugh... had a friend who used to carry one in a rig he build into a long, leather coat. He's not doing 3-5 for 'carrying an illegal weapon'.}

And if you do decide to carry... get lessons and then practice, practice, practice. It's a skill, like any other, and if it's rusty, you are more of a threat to those around you... and yourself.

Okay... skreed finished.

Yes. We even handled stage guns with care when I was in theater. Actors are kinda the last person you want to give a gun to. :gaptooth:

Then there was the incident where an audience member removed the gun from it's on-stage station at the intermission break. Oy! That's enough to drive you batty. Thank goodness for observant house managers!

I still remember when they filmed a Mel Gibson film downtown in 1998. Everyone knows when rounds are being fired. I was facinated by the call system used to get everyone on the same page, as it were.

Back in highschool my instructor friend had a brush with a stage gun maker that was a bit less careful than most. He's a known guy in theater circles in Chicago for converting vintage arms for blank use. This guy felt it would be right to demonstrate a gun in my friend's office. Ugh. Never heard the end of that.

Never had too much second thought handling special effects explosive powders. I was considered the responsible junior that year, and I didn't smoke. The guns are another matter. I was so happy that our stagemanager for that one show had a father with CIA background and had taken his kids to the range. I'm still not clear on exactly when the safety is on. I left that to my stagemanager to load and care for it. As stagemanagers wish it.

getting back to pepper spray, 'til illegal to carry it as self defence in Canada unless it's for defence against animals, e.g mad dog, bear, cougar, etc. however, one of the conservation officers who I worked with at the Ministry of Environment on Vancouver Island was strongly against using peper spray because most of the time it is not used properly or the wind shifts which then imobilizes you instead. I liked how he described it as you "flavouring" yourself fro the bear to eat you.

Remember that cute actor from the TV show Time Travellers (or something like that) where he was playing around with the prop gun and shot himself in the head? He suffered brain damage and died a few days later.

I have one of these jackets. yes it is cheaper than the one I found but not like the jacket used in the show. The MA-1 jacket is made of a shiny nylon material nothing like the jacket on the show. The G8 WEP jacket is the jacket on the show. If you want to be accurate, that is the way to go.
Look at my previous post and look at the jacket online yourself.
