Well, it was something in the book, but not in the movie. And your first guess is the closest. They were on the way back down from the observation tower....and they came across a certain teacher and she had Neville with him. He almost pulled their covers, so to speak, and this teacher makes an inquiry, in quite the unquestioning way....heh heh....
Who was the teacher?
and What did she say?
