It is the middle of the 21st Century. The planet Altor has become a popular trading post for various races in the Epsilon Erandi System. And where there is trade, there is crime. The planet’s capital, Demeter City, has become the crime capital of the galaxy.
Most of the planet’s inhabitants are either Creons or Tarns. Creons come from the nearby planet of Danae. They are generally physically large and quite fearsome looking, with large eyes set wide apart on the side of their heads. Their eyes can swivel around, meaning Creons can actually look behind them. They have scaly skin and are quite reptilian-looking. Most of the heavies used by criminal leaders are Creons, because of their powerful presence.
The Tarns come from the nearby planet of Simter. They are a much more human-looking race, with five fingers instead of the Creons’ four. Tarns are generally smaller, with pointed ears, three eyes and a rather aquatic look. The Tarns’ third eye is called the paramental eye. With this, the Tarns have the power of telekinesis (moving objects around by thought) and are also able to read people’s minds. Tarns are a more gentle race and seem to be fairly religious, as Tarn homes seem to feature some kind of shrine.
With crime rife in Demeter City, the law-abiding residents are thankful for the police of Precinct 88. The Precinct’s station house floats in space, miles above Demeter City. The man in charge of the station house is Captain Rexton Podly, an old, large, gruff Creon. Podly is hard but fair, and expects the best out of his officers at all times. He has a wife and two daughters. One of them, Samina, is an officer at the 38th Precinct.
The station house’s desk sergeant is Thorald Fredo, a quietly spoken and reliable Tarn male. Fredo is currently with his third wife, Yolander. They have a young daughter called Estes.
Three of the station’s officers are Hubble Orrin, Silas Romek and Aurelia Took. Hubble Orrin is a tall, young, Creon male with a very good sense of humour. He always tries to get away with doing as little work as possible. Orrin still lives with his parents in an area of Demeter City. For a while, Orrin’s partner was Beezle, a similar-looking Creon with an equally mad personality. Now Orrin has teamed up with Silas Romek, a small Creon with a thatch of blond hair on the top of his head. Romek is another practical joker, and the two provide a lot of the humour aboard the station house. Aurelia Took is a pleasant-looking and quiet Tarn female. She has a very cool head and forms one of the best teams in the station with her partner, the human Jane Castle.
As on the surface of the planet, most of the Precinct 88 station house’s occupants are either Creons or Tarns, but the last couple of years have seen the introduction of some humans into the police force.
Lieutenant Patrick Brogan is a tall, fair-haired man in his late thirties. After twenty years with the New York Police Department on Earth, Brogan decided it was time for a change. As part of an officer exchange deal, Brogan was posted to Demeter City to begin a new life. With him are his wife, Sally, teenage son, Matt, and daughter, Liz. Sally has found a job at Demeter City Hospital as a post-trauma therapist and has settled down quite well in her new life. The Brogans’ daughter, ten year-old Liz, hasn’t been too much trouble and seems to find her new life quite fun. Liz has acquired a pet - a strange furry creature called Zill. Zill sits on a perch most of the time and looks like a furry parrot. Liz seems to be the only person who can understand it when it starts chirping. Fourteen year-old Matt has made a few new friends, but has been very frustrated by the lack of places his father will let him go. Brogan doesn’t like Matt going downtown (down to Demeter City), and prefers his son to stay in Suburb Delta, where they live. Suburb Delta is a huge, floating complex, miles above Demeter City, containing housing, shops and other amenities. Brogan’s ground rules have caused several rows between him and his son.
Patrick Brogan is finding life difficult, with problems at home adding to problems at work. It is a hard task for him to adapt to the new style of policing in Demeter City, and to discover how to deal with the huge variety of alien species there. Luckily, when Brogan moved to Altor, his partner of five years in the NYPD, Jack Haldane, also moved to join him.
Jack Haldane is a handsome, dark-haired young man in his mid-twenties who likes a good laugh and a joke. Jack was brought up in Tennessee and is a lover of country music. Although Jack is fairly light-hearted most of the time, he is also an excellent police officer. Jack has a problem on Altor - the lack of human female interest. He is very confident with the ladies and is always on the lookout for a young woman. He has a huge crush on his colleague, Jane Castle, and makes no attempt to hide it.
Jane Castle is a gorgeous young English policewoman, who has been on Altor for about a year. She is very level headed, and has formed a wonderful partnership with Aurelia Took. The pair are such good friends that they share an apartment down in Demeter City. Jane knows she is the object of Jack’s desires, and always rejects his advances. Deep down, however, she does fancy Jack, but just likes playing hard to get.
One of the other human officers in the station is Lionel Carson. Carson is one of the cleverest officers in the 88th Precinct, being a medical and computer expert. He works closely with Slomo. Slomo is the station’s RSA (Robotic Secretarial Assistant), a small, mobile robot with a friendly manner who is able to carry out a number of important tasks around the office, making him a vital member of a very successful police force.
