Vulcan secrets and a rescue mission are the order of the day in 'Breaking The Ice', according to new information released yesterday.

StarTrek.com has posted its official synopsis for the episode, which can be found below:

Trip learns that T'Pol is transmitting secret messages to a Vulcan ship, which has been shadowing Enterprise for weeks. Meanwhile, Archer must attempt a dangerous rescue to recover two crewman stranded on a rapidly disintegrating comet.

'Breaking The Ice' is the first Enterprise outing for writing team Maria and Andre Jacquemetton. Together they have penned episodes for Relic Hunter, Jack Of All Trades and Baywatch Hawaii. The episode was directed by Trek veteran Terry Windell, who helmed numerous episodes of Voyager, including 'Dark Frontier, Part II' and 'Shattered.'

The only guest actor listed for the episode is William Utay, playing the role of Vanik. In addition to his role of Wilhelm Rolf on the long-running soap Days Of Our Lives, Utay has appeared in television series such as ER and Seinfeld.

Actress Jolene Blalock (T'Pol) previously confirmed that this episode would deal with her character's betrothal. "Yeah, she's betrothed," she said. "And she's dealing with what to do, because obviously you can't have a relationship, emotional or not, in any species, and have a position on a starship. And that's the dilemma. She has to deal with that. Is the marriage going to be postponed, is T'Pol going to work it out, is she going to stay on the ship or what?"

okay - this aired last night -

and it was a really good episode (tho i missed the 1st 15 minutes b/c i fell asleep watching JAG - damned cold i have that requires medicating - Benedryl makes me sleepy- anyway) -- so, i don't know WHY they were on the comet - think they were collecting info or something --

but - Trip and T'Pol interacting was really nice - it was done well - tho Trip still sounds very 'hick' when he talks - his personality is coming out more -- (and i'm starting to remember names - this is a good sign!) -- I still don't really like T'Pol (just something about her) but she doesn't bug me as much as she did in the beginning - just getting used to her, i guess --

Reed must be the 'away mission' guy - kinda like Riker or Data - he's always on the away missions (what is his job description? isn't he the weapons guy? - i should remember this, but i don't)

(gonna watch the 'repeat' on saturday to catch the 15 mins i missed last night)

something else i noticed/realized about this ship -- there's nothing directly in front of the Captain's chair, except the viewer - why is that? why are the helmsmen and such on the periphery? and there's not very much behind the captain either -- just observations ---

interesting pt. about the Captin's chair. Don't know. They were an the comet becasue it was composed of some rare substance that even the Vulcans don't have much of it. I thought Trip was like Riker? Don't know why Reed was down there. Liked the ep, but the school kids part kinda dragged on, felt like filler-in stuff

Re: Captains Chair

I read an interview with Braga or Berman and they said that they wanted less clutter, to make the bridge look more hands on, or something like that. In another interview Reed says there aren't enough seats for all the main characters so they have to stand looking over his shoulder if they are all on the bridge together.

question: who is the 1st officer? (one more of those things i should remember)

and - who is the 2nd officer (if they have one)

and Trip may be the '1st officer' - but he isn't sent on the away missions all the time -- Reed seems to go on a bunch of them --

and - about the bridge- yeah - Trip is always hanging over Reed's shoulder -- it looks really weird - like Trip doesn't really have anything to do - so he just watches what Reed's doing --

who's the engineer? have we seen him since the beginning??

(i'm losing track of who's who again - ack!)

(You've seen more of these episodes than me), but I think that Trip is the Chief Engineer. That's why he has to stay behind "With his Engines" in 'Fight or Flight'. And there is no good reason for him to be on the bridge anyway. Merryweather is the 'pilot', although I don't remember them actually calling him that. Now, he ought to be somewhere near the front, don't you think, so he can see where they are going?

I don't think they have a first or second officer. T'Pol acts as if she is, but she is 'science advisor' or something, 'busybody' maybe!

ya I believe you're right about Trip. Archer gave him "bathroom question" yesterday something about him being the Engineer therefore best person to answer.

In the season premiere we found out that T'Pol's vulcan rank outranked Trip's earth rank. Therefore T'Pol is the first office. The one in command when Archer is not available. Trip is the second officer, but also the chief engineer. Reed is the weapons officer and in charge of security.

I think the interaction between T'Pol and Trip was very good. T'Pol is learning how to work with these humans. Although she is really working to control her emotions at times.

That Vulcan captain was insulting. If you are invited to dinner you don't usually eat before going. And just what did he say to T'Pol?

sorry - i seem to have misplaced my Vulcan-English dictionary --

okay - i was thinking Trip was the Engineer - but he's never in Engineering - that's probably what confused me ---

and i agree - if Merryweather is the 'pilot' or 'helmsman' why isn't his station in front of the viewer? (which sort of functions as a windshield/front window) --

tho, i was very pleased with this episode - T'Pol playing nice, and Archer actually listening to her and taking her advice - if they are gonna be a 'crew' then they should work together - not at cross purposes --
