One of the reasons Michael Shanks gave for leaving Stargate SG-1 was that the show, during Season 5, had moved towards emphasis on the NID conspiracy as opposed to going to new planets and meeting new species, thereby preventing any growth of his character.

I've been one who has been disappointed with the whole Q/we need a conspiracy theory portion of Season 5. How about you?

Cast your vote: should the plot lines of Season 6 stay primarily with conspiracy, or should Stargate return to its original mission of traveling the universe (and possibly finding new gadgets!).

It should have a happy medium. I for one liked the episode er... bad at titles... with the Unas in and Red Sky, but I do like a bitof a conspiracy twist. I say bit. And I like a lot of character interactions too:D Less Q but not gone all together!

I have to agree with Skip on this one. There needs to be a balance. Not totally focused on one or the other, and I think that the show can achieve that balance if they try. I think they've been experimenting alot lately with different angles, which is a good thing, but I can't help missing the good 'ol days of trekking around a planet being chased by a goa'uld etc.

I do enjoy the conspiracy aspect, but only in small amounts, this isn't the X Files, it's Stargate. The Stargate is essentially the star of the show. They need to be going through it. I'd like to see alot more of the things esablished in season one start to come out, like the Furlings and the more on the Ancients. And of course, more Asgard, cos god knows we love the little guys.

i know the conspiracy plotline isn't a favorite and i much rather preferred them exploring but...the conspiracy is the most realistic one of the two.
pretend the stargate exists for real: would our (my) government be content with 'gee what nice people' 'what cool information you have about hte origins of babylonian myth' etc...kind of stuff that they found at first or would it fall into more of a
'there are nasty aliens out there that almost destroyed the planet once, we have to have weapons to stop them' mindset?

quite frankly had the events of serpents grasp/lair really happned, you bet your tush the govt would be screaming for weapons and tech to repell such an invasion in the future. and with such weapons comes power. whoever controls said weapons can be seen as the savior of the world. and find me a politician who wouldnt' want to wield such power. take you about 2.3 seconds.
whoever controls the gate and what comes through it literally controls the fate of earth and the fate of other planets. the SGC is in the middle of a power struggle.

it's not the most fun storyline, but the most realisitc. and the only way they can get back to exploring the universe is to settle the power struggle because it's very likely that while they're watching thier backsides guarding aginst the NID and whoever else, the goauld can sneak in the front door because we're so busy fighting amongst ourselves we don't bother to look out the window at the gathering hoards.

you could draw a parallel to the current world situation. everyone can unite to fight a universal enemy (terrorists or goaulds) or can spend so much time, energy and resources squabbling over who gets to do what that the next thing you know the bad guys are on your front porch.

right now the fear of a common enemy is dividing the powers that be in the stargate universe, they need to be united against the gaould or the snakeheads are gonna win

I believe that there should be some kind of compromise between the conspiracy theory/first contact storylines. Yes, the X-Files has built the show around the concept; and SG:SG-1 would be yet another show that is deals with uncovering secrets and fighting politicians/government. I would rather see more visits to new gate coordinates than seeing them justify the program's existence...again.

I do wonder however if we would be having this conversation if it was indeed the LAST season of our beloved show. Would we not be concerned because it would be the last major plotline inthe series? Would the writers have taken a different arch if they knew (well in advance) that they would be on for one more year?

Could they have chosen two more annoying as . . . jerks? Q and Senator /President Kinsey! :disgust: I know the appearance of reality is important, but these guys just push me toward my remote control (and the erase button on my VCR).

We need both.... And we should carry on with both! I think while Mr. Shanks used this as an excuse to move on we sholdn't. But I do think that both are viable andshould be used... I loved the exploring planets but shades of grey and touchstone type stuff are necessary especially after season one's Politics, There but for the Grace, and te two Serpents.... then there is others that touch on it.... Like Season three... POV, Shdes of Grey, Fair Game... four's one with Marina Serits... theRussian Gate... etc... I really think they can do both well.... but they should concentrate on gating!

I voted for back to the stars. I see all your points, but pesonally I'd rather keep to our team. It's enough for me to know in the background that there is a consperacy going on, we know that, but I don't enjoy it as much when they focus on it. I say let it stay in X-Files, I'm all consperacied out.:smokin:

Back to the stars. Really, I think they should come across another enemy. Something really scary, like the Magog! or even worse!

yeah, goa'uld has got tacky

replicators are boring, perhaps an asgard rebel group

or another planet of those energy things from message in a bottle....

We do need the balance of "real world" vs. "fantastic! we 'Gate cool places" but I think they haven't touched on some cool stuff they could do to the team offworld. I caught the 2001 episode last night and it has a nice blend of aliens putting the screws on vs. politicians sticking their noses where they'd be blown off. 2001 showed that the fight on-world is surely as tough as anything that they faced. It showed that the struggle has evolved over the years and I find that quiet thoughtful on the writer's parts. They are doing something intresting with the consparicy. It changes and people change sides over time. That is cool stuff to put into the show. It's far more clear cut seeming than the XF. At least you know where a few people stand on the issue.

if there's going to be a resolution to the team dynamics they have to set it up now. I'm sure MS leaving put a spanner in what the PTB had in mind up until now. I'm sure hoping they don't go all cheezy on us with the ascention thingi. Seems a useless wish, that's what they're going to do. They gotta know the longer fans have more brains for something a bit meatier. Unless this is all like the XF where a giant influx of fans occured right in season 4 and they want to gear it to the lower aspect of who watches. Thank goodness for fan fic. I can find something to my liking on the net.

MS got the right to say he wants to go, but like I heard this week "you dance with the girl you bring to the prom." He knew what he was getting into, didn't he? What other company will sign him on knowing he bailed out of SG-1 before the end? Is it really the end? Was the SciFi Channel saying they'd only take a year? That would be silly if ratings made it worth their while to keep it going. I know some folks won't be back but if they do things right I'd still watch a season seven. Just my 2 cents.

Well it didn't work out too well for Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar, STGN).

I still am of the opinion that this is just a t.v. show. If I wanted that much reality, I would go back to the courthouse for another hour. :disgust:

"Back to the stars" is kicking butt in the poll!!! Someone call the writers! ;)

I'm with the "balance" of both story lines proposal. The conspiracy is fine, as long as Brad Wrigt has this all planned out. What crippled X-Files was that CC was making it up as he went along. That's why there was no logic to it. And the team needs to keep going to planets in the meantime. If handled right, it could make for a nice dichotomy.

I'm not privy to the details of MS leaving. Lots of times, though, actors sign 5 year contracts rather than 7. Does anyone know? If so, his contract was up and he was free to leave. He said in an interview that he never expected the show to last more than 2 years. And as sad as I am about his departure, if he wants to go, let him. I've said it before, an unhappy actor does a lousy job. Just look at David Duchovny's work in the last season of X files. He practically phoned in his part.

I don't know. I didn't start the thread in the Teal'c folder. :erm:

Is it me or has Teal'c not been in a lot of season 5 eps l8ly, well, apart from in the ep Threshold??
