Sam's character has all the hallmarks of a Mary Sue.

1. She's smarter than everyone else.

2. She can defeat anyone in a fight, even a guy twice her size (Emancipation).

3. She always saves the day with some device she can whip up in jig-time. (100 Days).

4. Every guy she meets is in love with her (Jack, Jonas, Martouf, Narim, Orlin, Joe, etc.)

5. She's instantly an expert on everything (botany in Emancipation, every type of engineering problem, etc.)

She's just too perfect.

A Mary Sue is a completely idealized character. In fanfic, Mary Sue is usually a projection of the author. In a show Mary Sue is a too-good-to-be-true character who always saves the day. She's inevitably stunningly beautiful, smarter than Einstein, every man she meets falls in love with her and she's just all-around perfect.

Sam is really starting to meet this criteria. Read some of Anni's posts to get a fuller description of "St. Sam of Cheyenne Mountain".

Obviously, I'm not blaming AT, it's the writers/producers fault.

Gee, Jobet

Dunno, she's becoming more...normal:p I mean, this season she doesn't know the answer for everything, and she screwed it up in Red Sky...I like that!

Showtime hasn't seen fit to air the second half of S5, so maybe they toned down the whole St. Sam bit. I hope so. A character is a lot more interesting if she/he has some flaws.

if i can put in one wish for season 6....i want sam to futz something up. anything, i just want her to make a mistake and have to get bailed out.

my other fantasy of course is one time when jack is in his 'carter'll fix it' mode she'll toss her scanner at him with a 'i'm tired of doing it, fix it yourself...sir' and stomp off to nap under a tree or something.

just once before the show ends i want her to tell jack off. and not under the influence of alien drugs or anything, a fully conscious 'bite me' would jsut tottally make my day

i like the bite me idea. that would rock!

sam to jack"bite me, sir!"

lol:rolly2:

"St. Sam" . . . sounds like the female cats have put their claws out. :dead:

I really, REALLY like the "bite me" idea! And it's not as if Jack hasn't earned it a time or two.

now *that* would ruin ne sorta shipper ending .......:D

I don't know. Making up could be a good shipper ending. And if Jack can't take it, Sam deserves to find out now so she can get another guy (that doesn't die, of course).

For the last time people:

Sam will never tell Jack 'bite me'. He is her commanding officer and that would be insubordination. Talking to your CO like that could end your career, and I really don't think Jack would take that attitude from her. These are professional military personnel after all.

Sam and Jack AREN'T equals. There is no way they can have a relationship as long as he is her CO.

The military takes a very dim view of breaking the regulations. A few years ago an air force pilot named Kelly Flynn had an affair with a married civilian employee. She was court martialed and kicked out of the airforce. In Aberdeen, Maryland, in the early 90's a drill instructor had an affair with a recruit. He's in jail.

And no, General Hammond would not turn a blind eye. For one thing if they were caught, it would reflect badly on him for allowing the situation to happen. (CO's are held responsible for everything that happens during their command.) For another, all the other SG commanders would be justifiably angry at the blatant favoritism showed Jack. Imagine what that would do to morale. You can bet in that situation there would be plenty of complaints to the higher ups. Not to mention the fact that dating a co-worker can really ruin your working relationship with that person.

One thing puzzles me. If Sam and Jack are so much in love, and the only thing that prevents them from getting together is the fact they work together, why doesn't one of them transfer or retire? The fact that neither one is willing to change his or her career path so that they can be together seems to indicate that they're not that much in love after all. It's not as if either one couldn't find some other work.

I agree with you that the 'bite me' idea will never happen. I think most of us, shippers are happy with those bits we get every now and then: glances, smiles, little touching...I'd be very disappointed when my screen starts to melt because they pour their hearts out to each other.

Now that's what non of us want to see. That would make a nice soap opera :dead: Of course the show isn't about their love! Hey, shippers are just projecting here! In their place (Sam & Jack), I wouldn't quit that job no matter how much I'm in love!:D We leave that part for fanics, right?

Now back on topic..kinda...something really bothers me. I hate when there's a problem, Jack asks how to solve it and Sam answers there's no way to work it out. Then Danny comes up with an idea, and Sam instantly says 'that's it'! Why do they do this?! She's the scientist for cryin' out loud! Danny's idea usually very simple, Sam should have thought about it! If they want Danny to save the day why can't he tell what's on his mind right away? They make Sam seem pessimistic and hasty! And they've done this at least 2-3 times on the show!:angryfire

Ya know something? I can continue to hope Sam will tell Jack to "bite me" if I want to. And since more of the team's home lives are coming into play, who knows? Maybe Jack and Teal'c will come over to Sam's home again with a Star Wars rental, and she'll get her chance. :D

I think that if Sam prefaces her "bite me" with a "with all due respect, Sir" she can get away with it. And it would probably have to be off duty as well.

I agree with Jobeth, though.

in reality....well in reality there's no way a coloenl would be leading a field team, sam & danny would not be on a first contact team adn teal'c....well he'd be in little beakers by now.
and then there's the fact that there's no way teh military would risk it's foremost gate expert adn languages expert on first contact missions. sam & danny are too valuable to risk.

but since it's tv we can set reality aside. it's true that if sam were to tell jack to bite me in front of witnesses she'd be toast.
and if both of them ever gave hammond cause he'd separate them

but if she's working in her lab, jack comes in to bug her and she goes 'with all due respect sir, bite me' privatey.....she'd likely get away with it.

and as long as sam & jack don't do anything beyond flirting....they can get away with it.

She doesn't seem to be too good on the personal relaitonships/family side. It still seems that there's a bit of tension between her and her dad, and ... well, we never get to see her brother, and she's not had much luck with the guys! :p

Ah, you amusing and endearing realists. :D You hold so strongly to your rules and regs, and yet you have no problems with a Stargate, little grey men, and a weekly showing of Goa'uld Mardi Gras. ;)

How your insistence upon holding on to the truly boring delights us! :rolly2:

There are many threads and posts that discuss the Rules and Regs of the almighty Military Machine. In fact, Anni told us about her combat time, and how her long hair lasted in a french braid (as I recall, "stunk to high heaven" was her quote about how she returned from war games). :p

I always get tickled when we debate/discuss/argue about Sam's short hair cut, how long it was in "Divide & Conquer," if she or Jack should retire, whether he, as a colonel would actually be leading SG-1 or whether Daniel and Teal'c would have made it onto the team . . .

we watch them go through a Gate every week that appears, initially, to be made of water, they arrive on another planet, galaxies away, high and dry, manage to escape some of the worst dressers ever to be found in the known universe, have met THE little gray men of Area 51, met the Nox without rolling on the ground in laughter . . . and basically, the show fascinates many because of the ongoing new, strange, funny and unique things about it.

I'm rarely willing to argue over the mundane when humor and creativity are in full gear. I'd rather just sit back and enjoy the ride! And that is one of the reasons I enjoy scifi - there are less rules and regs to bind you and your artistry and imagination - no matter where they may lead you, it's an open field.
