yeah its kind of interesting how things go by the wayside when filming... like whatever happened to being covered with frost after coming through the gate...in rl it probably just got to be too much to have the makeup artists do each epi....also same with those butt ugly helmets...they lost those pretty quick too. but then they switched to the p90 and visually they are way more ackward to film.... interesting.
though it is a tv show i think most of us kind of wish it could be real though. ultimate travel experience.
Well, I suppose we shoudl be grateful for what they do still ahve int he show that makes it realistic, the MALP for example, and how the DHD is always there and stuff ... I guess there's always gonna be errors...
sometimes the errors become the fun part later - they are little trivia bits that amuse the fans, and keep their attention later during reruns. I think they give our fanfic writers something to think about.
And sometimes they are just plain funny.
It was interesting to see in Meridian that
they sent two missiles through the Gate. I wondered when we'd get to that.

i think it would be cool if they would do a special on bloopers and outakes and errors..if not for tv then maybe the conventions??? :rolly2:
To get back to the topic of Sam's Mary-Sue'ness, what failings does this character have at all? I can't really think of any, apart from her assumption that she can fix anything (although this has yet to come back and bite her in the butt).
Something that annoys me is that she never really questions her orders - even if you can tell she disagrees with her CO, she will always follow orders. I know this isn't really a failing, because that's what the military is all about, but I think I would like her to go the whole hog and disobey orders a la Daniel or Jack (even teal'c has done it!). Even just once - it could be an interesting story as she would doubtless be very conflicted about it.

i don't know --the only time she goes to disobey an order or bend the order is when jacks life is on the line like in the sentinel
when jack tells her not to disarm the force shield and destroy the divice....wonder what she would of done if grieves didn't do what he did?*g*
and another time into the fire when she went back to disarm the force sheild but went to look for jack instead especially after makepeace told her that they would not go after him and to consider him a casuilty.

That was one ep in particular I was thinking of when I posted above. You can see she was really not wanting to follow orders, but you know she would have. Whereas if it had been Hammond giving the orders and Jack with the doubts, then you wouldn't know for sure which way Jack would jump.

How so? Jack and Sam are both v military, and yet Jack at least, would disobey an order if he disagreed with it (and thought the end justified the means - for example, Learning Curve)
yeah but jack isn't as career oriented, has already retired once for real, once for undercover and once for 30 seconds....but sam is still moving up and wouldn't want to mess that up plus it a personality thing too.
I have just read this thread, and it appears to me that this debate, and where each person stands, really depends on WHAT their perspective of a mary sue is. Yes, we know Mary Sue, is perfect, beautiful, intelligent, charismatic, tough, ass-kicking. But in relation to the show and sam as mary sue, opinions can vary and contrast ccording to different factors. there are two sides.
For example.
Sam is pretty, but to contradict the normal stereotype of an ass kicking MS, she does not show it, in what she wears or her hair, etc.
Yeah...we KNOW she is one smart woman. BUT...her people skills are kinda well, dodgy. How many times have we seen her get wrapped up in technobabble? She spends 99.9% of her downtime on base. And not only that the military training suppresses her moral integrity to some degree. In all other mary sue shows the protaganist tends to do whatever they want to, or what they feel is right. And in most, even though they are under authority, they defy it. Sam has proved many times now that she follows orders, even when she believes they are not right. (With the exception of some cases with Jack, as mentioned before). Also this particular depends on what you think is right and wrong for the Mary Sue to do.
the classic Mary Sue is in love with another character. Fair enough, there are shippy moments. Sam and Jack admitted they have "more than their supposed to" feelings about one another. But they did not openly declare it. It was admittance, not action, and since then there has been no follow up whatsoever. Well except for Window of Opportunity, but hey, any man would ahve done the same if he knew their was no consequences, and Sam was never proven to reciprocate!!!!!!:rolly2:
Season one Sam was definetly a bit of a mary sue. The tough and defiant side in COTG
briefing room scene, where she cut o'Neill down with that remark about reproductive organs. (I think that was as close to bite me as we are gonna get!)
,
The heroine in distress act, "The Enemy Within"
Kawalsky takes her as hostage, and throws her into the elavator wall
"Emancipitation" - the eternal 'women can kick any male's ass' episode.
even when they are as big as the leader, and disadvantaged with no weapons...who knew level three hand to hand combat could take you so far!
and "Hathor" Same deal, except its cat fights with m16's.
The Broca Divide
the seductive intent of the primitive major....
Solitudes - shippy, and sweet, shows the early relationship between hero and heroine
Intelligence: "Torment of tantulus", "Cold Lazarus" Breif Candle"
Than there was the episodes where Sam got to show some emotion, as all good Mary Sue's do. "Singularity", "Fire and Water", "The first commandment"
Actually looking at the list above, I'd have to say Sam was the Mary Sue in season one! But throughout the following seasons, she has grown as a character and we have explored the flaws her character has, including her relationship with her father.
To some degree, Sam still does display traits of the Mary sue ideal, but it is my opinion that it is far less than when the show began.
To summarise all I just said.....ah,I'm sitting on the fence.
