gatecon 2004

Allan said he'd have the Gatecon site updated to purchase tix for next year in about 3 weeks -- remember, he's gotta get back to Australia before he can do updating --- ;)

but, probably by about mid-October -- so keep your eyes peeled! :)

Hi all :) Can't wait to go next year! Can I ask you all some questions about the con? (The last con I attended was for Dr. Who in 1982, so it's been a while...)

1. Do tickets run out? Should we get them right away?
2. How many people attended this year (rough est.) How many in line for autographs, how many at the panels for the main characters, etc.
3. How expensive are things like autographs and photos?
4. Any other important items?

Basically, I want to start planning and budget accordingly :D

Thanks,
Nys.

Hey Nyssa,
This might help...

1. No the tickets don't run out. They don't have a limit on the number. But the earlier you buy them, the better number you get and therefore, an earlier place in the photo and auto lines. During the con the seating is not based on number. It's a first come, first served deal. The earlier you get to the door on the day, the better seat you will get.

2. There were between 550 - 600 hundred people there roughly including day pass holders. It seems like a lot but its really not. The only thing is that it takes a couple of hours to get everyone through autos and photos.

3. Autographs are free. There is however a stipulation that you are only allowed 2 per actor, and one of the things you get sighned must be purchased at the convention, like a photo or something. The photos were $12 per actor and very worth it.

4. Any other important items. It's good to stay at the con hotel. It makes everything so much easier, plus it's a great place. The only other thing is how do you get to Vancouver? Most people have to come a long way so things like airfares are expensive.

If you have any other questions give us a yell.

Important things...

Shelby hit all the basic important stuff. :}

Yeah - Shelby pretty much got it -- ;)

One thing I hope they keep next year that they did this year, is the way the photo / auto sessions were set up ---

ie: Saturday it was

Panel
Panel
break
Panel
Panel
break
Panel (Michael Shanks, btw)
Photo session

And Sunday was similar but had auto sessions where the photos were --

It was a great set-up and kept people from missing panels or other things to go to photo / auto sessions - (not that most ppl would mind skipping a panel to have photos w/ Michael Shanks or some of the other guests, but it always felt 'rushed' last year when the photo sessions were happening 'during' everything else) --

I agreee with Highlander, having the Photo/Autos at the end of the day was great because it meant that they could get through everyone who was there without rushing. It meant that during the sessions you actually got to talk to the guests. It was really relaxed.

Panels and such

Having to make folks choose between panels and photos/autos makes for *very* cranky con goers so I highly doubt we'll be changing our format on that any time soon.

more GATECON PUHLEASE...

Hey! I too am trying to plan for Gatecon V/Gatecon 04. So far I know the dates (July 15-18), know its in the Vancouver area, it's at the Marriott (sp?)? and everything thats in the previous posts. Are there any other tips and/or tricks when you're actually at Gatecon? :) Thanks for the info!

It's actually at the Best Western Richmond Inn, although the Marriott is on the same block.

As for tips... Come along and have a great time. :D

Tips? Ah ... show up, stay loose, go with the flow and have fun. That about covers it. :D

I'm already being talked into going again by friends and I haven't even been home a week.

My problem is I have no will-power. I'm supposed to start saving now for a new car for next year. Look like I'll be putting that car off for yet another year.

Thanks Shelby, Rowan and Allan (hope I didn't miss anyone...)

The info was VERY helpful. I intend to purchase my ticket as soon as the site is set up. I am very much looking forward to it. (And, looking forward to getting copies of the past Cons, as referenced in the other thread.)

Thanks again, and Allan, it sure seems like you and your team do an excellent job with the convention. I wonder how many of you help out. Seems like a very worthwile project.

Crews

Allan's folks are, needless to say, seriously 'behind the scenes' but we couldn't get along without each and every one of them. They start before the rest of the con and are there after making sure everything is taken down right and safe. I'm not sure what his final 'body count' was thins year - you couldn't get them to stay in one place long enough to count.

I had at least 14 wonderful folks working with me at registration over the 4 days of the con and I could not have done the job without each and every one of them. These are the smiling faces you first see when you come to Gatecon and they help set the mood for the rest of your stay with us. It can be a fairly stressful job at times, especially when there are folks lined up 20 deep waiting to check in, but each and every one of them handeled themselves with class and style.

If I was totally remiss at the con itself, I want to say 'Thank You' to each and every one of you right now. You helped make 'Gatecon2003'.

Take a bow. You earned it. :D

I think you deserve a round of applause too Rowan.

The whole time I saw you at Gatecon you were on your feet, busily helping everyone. You always had time for questions and were there straight away to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.

Your a star!

:star: :star: :star:

I just have a small question about the previous GateCons. What are the age groups that attend, I know it's pretty much all ages just wondering if there has been a set age majority turning up in the past.

Also just out of interest are the majority of the fans that go female? or is it an even mix of males and females.

Thanks in advance.

Averages...

As much as I hate averages, I think there's some areas I can consider.

Female outnumber males by a bunch. I don't think I can give you an exact ration, but I think it's safe to say 10 to 1.

Ages? Figure that since most folks have to pay their own way, not only do you have the con fee itself, but hotel costs, air fair and meals, the greater majority of folks are in the working age bracket: mid 20's through 50's. I know that's a wide span, but I'm rotten as guessing ages.

Now, we've had kids in arms and folks older than their 50's, but I feel pretty safe in seeing this as the bulk.

Rowan

Thanks Rowan. I was wondering the same thing as replicatorX.

I know it's a broad estimated age range, but are there any "kids" or "children" who go? I'll define kids and children as under the age of 13. How about teenagers? Would I be correct in assuming that if/when there are people of this lower age bracket, they are usually with their parents?
Just wondering...

Thanks again.
