What Anime and Animation are you currently watching?

The Legend of Heroes - Sen no Kiseki - Northern War. The granddaughter of a traitor enlists to clean up her family’s name.

Another original anime, this time with a science fantasy approach. It didn’t seem good, but I like giving original anime a chance. The worldbuilding didn’t feel new. Evil fascist empire, monsters and blah blah blah. The protagonist wears a helmet for most of the episode, trying to hide that she’s a girl, but it’s pretty damn obvious to anyone who watched at least two anime.

It’s not a good first episode. The official synopsis tells a lot more than what actually happened. The characters are unidimensional and clichéd.

Not worth it.

Tokyo Revengers S2: Christmas Showdown. Second Season of Tokyo Revengers. It started where S1 left off. In that timeline, Toman has become a corporate superpower, and Takemichi, its corrupt leader.

Not much to say about this. Stupid protagonist and mindless action make up for good past-time activity. Basically. This anime’ formula makes you eager to know what’s gonna happen next.

Nier Automata Ver 1.1a. Exiled from Earth, mankind sends androids to fight for them in a proxy war against robots that took over the planet.

Adaptation of one of the best video games of 2017 (great year btw). The animation is great, and I really liked how they stayed accurate to the source material (panty shots included). The first episode is almost exactly the beginning of the game, with the same plot twist at the end (I’d forgotten so it took me by surprise). Nier is perhaps the most philosophical game of all times, and I’m eager to see how anime viewers will experience that philosophy.

The only letdown is the CGI in some parts, specially the robots. There’s been talk in the community about this; otakus are worried. I confess that I was blown away by all the rest so this part didn’t bother me.

Vinland Saga S2. Second Season of one of the Big Three of Seinen (alongside Berserk and Vagabond).

I’m curious to see what’s gonna happen. For a revenge story, S1 ended in an unexpected way. The first episode of S2 is told from another character’s POV, and his background is similar to Thorfinn’s. That tells me that said character mirrors Thorfinn, and Thorfinn will probably stop him from getting his revenge.

School Live! A group of schoolgirls try to protect a friend who, because of a mental illness, doesn’t know that there’s a zombie apocalypse and they’re the only survivors.

The reason I gave this a shot was because: 1) it was written by the same man who wrote Akudama Drive, one of my favorite anime of all time, so I’m expecting a lot of craziness for the following episodes; and 2) it’s short, only a 12-episode season.

The first episode is a bunch of moe. Until the twist ending that is, where we learn that the protagonist believes everything is okay and there’s no zombie outbreak. I’m eager to see what’s in store for me next. I’ve seen people do a lot of unnecessary in depth reviews of this anime, saying that it is deeply philosophical and that there’s more than meets the eye. Also, supposedly, it’s a top-notch horror anime.

Ooyukiumi no Kaina (Kaina of the Great Snow Sea). In a world engulfed by an ever-growing snow sea, people either live by the roots of giant trees or, more rarely, up in the canopies. A princess from the surface travels above to save her kingdom, and ends up coming across Kaina, the protagonist.

As expected from the creator of Blame!, there’s great worldbuilding with giant structures, but this time, the structures are made by nature itself (the author went to a world-famous architecture school); and the tone is very different: it's bright and uplifting, the opposite of Blame! It’s still too early to talk about the characters, but the plot seems to be working fine.

The only letdown is the 3D animation. I think this author is cursed.

Junji Ito: Maniac. Another anthological series adapting the work by the master of modern horror.

Ok, this is basically Junji Ito Collection Season 2, but they’re not calling that because it’s a Netflix original. All the episodes premiered yesterday, and I binged. Like Collection, the adaptation just can’t do justice to the source material. Maybe Ito’s drawings are just too darn good. I liked watching some of my favorite stories though.

CAN HARDLY WAIT TO SEE IT!

FREEZING very naughty T&A to the extreme. buxom HS girls are the only defense against creatures from elsewhere; but they seem to like to fight each other. Weak guys called limiters work with them.

A classic fan service action anime! Very similar to Seikon no Qwaser and Sekirei. I'd say the former is the craziest because the girls have to breastfeed the male companions in order to give them power (I'm not joking).

Hikari no Ou (The Fire Hunter). After a war, the world is engulfed by a giant forest and humans get infected by some sort of condition that makes them go into spontaneous combustion in the presence of natural fire. The only sources of fire are harvested from creatures that reside in the forest. The protagonist, a village girl, is saved by a Fire Hunter, who dies while fighting one of the creatures, leaving behind his weapon and his dog.

This is top-notch fantasy. It has been scripted by the legendary Mamoru Oshii himself. The worldbuilding is great, and the animation is a work of art.

Few people are watching this, mostly because it hasn’t been hyped, and that’s a shame. I hope it lives on to become a cult classic.

Hmm, thanks, alexvss. Could not find Seikon no Qwaser on CR, but Sekirei is available.

As I recall, that one went out of print rather abruptly. I sold my set for 3 x what I paid for it.

I did enjoy it.

Watching The Misfit of Demon King Academy, rather amusing. Season 2 just started last month.

The Legend of Vox Machina S2. "Renaissance The Boys". After slaying the dragon and return to the capital as heroes, the craziest mercenary group, Vox Machina, now has to face a group of four elderly dragons that wish to conquer the world.

It started exactly where S1 left off, and it’s amazing. The first episode shows how insanely strong the new enemies are. It happened just like in a videogame: after you kill a boss, multiple bosses appear at the same time. The comedy is still sharp, if you like that kind of humor. The dubbing is also good: the guy from the hotel in John Wick is the main villain.

I realized all episodes are already in, and I’ll watch everything this week. I stumbled upon this new season by chance, so it almost went under the radar. It seems that they're not marketing this as well as the first one. That's a shame because I wish more people watched this.

I enjoyed Vox Machina Season 1, and I've seen the first few episodes of Season 2. The animation of the monsters is excellent and it's a very well-made show overall. I find that it works much better when it's being a comedy, when it feels new and fresh, than a serious drama, when it feels like a lot of stuff I've seen before. A lot of animation leaves me completely cold (bewildered and slightly creeped out are optional), but this is pretty entertaining.

I hope this ridiculous conversation makes it into the show sometime!

But that conversation has been animated. It's in episode 5 of the show IIRC.

Just began re-watching Sgt. Frog. I was never able to finish it, because the subtitles on the last few episodes are mixed-up. Say ep #330 has the subs for #331. They (CR) know about this, but so far, no action to resolve.

Anyway, I was tired of finding very good comedies, but they are either too short (too few eps), or still in production, & also too few eps. Sgt. Frog is very satisfying, and up to about #315, the subs are fine.
