How do you know they didn't think things through? Maybe they did and decided on the basis of evidence that Ned would win. I haven't seen any compelling evidence either way for a clear lead, bar Tarly being labelled the finest solder in the land by characters in the books, whom are not definitive authorities, by my reckoning. And likewise, Ned had a famous victory over Dayne, but GRRM hasn't written (yet) how that happened.

That is why the word PROBABLY stands there, nor did i write all of those who voted for ned

looking at the AGOT-Roleplay, which is made together with GRRM, Eddard Stark is nearly as good a fighter as Jamie Lannister and a lot better then most others.

I think the problem is that people forget that when Randyll Tarly led Mace Tyrell's van in the Battle of Ashford and crushed Robert Baratheon's forces, they did not realise that the van consisted of Randyll Tarly, alone, in a van.

Thus he is the greatest warrior on the Westerosi continent and would kill Ned Stark even if Stark had Ice and Tarly was armed only with a herring. If, as seems likely, Sam discovers some kind of secret in Oldtown that will help the destruction of the Others, then Tarly will emerge as the overall hero of the books (since his foresight in sending Sam to the Wall would have led directly to the salvation of Westeros).

After all, the primary question every warrior in Westeros asks of himself in a dangerous situation is: WWRTD?
