I have a hard time believing that Jaime would have been willing to take on The Mountain.

While the Viper, for all intents and purposes, slew Gregor hand to hand.

Oberyn was more suited to fight a powerhouse such as The Mountain while Jaime, with his sword, had a very clear disadvantage. However, Oberyn will have problems dealing with such a fas opponent like Jaime and his skill.
