Will somebody suggest a good fantasy series?

I really enjoyed the 'Uglies' series by Scott Westerfeld. Really imaginative, and had me gagging for more.

A writer called Daniel Waters is on his second book of a series about teenage zombies. Generation Dead was the first, and well worth a read.

And I know it's a one-off, but my favourite, and most memorable in the YA category as of late, has to be Unwind by Neal Shusterman. That book will stay with me or a long, long time.

I don't know how available these books are outside of Australia, but John Marsden's Tomorrow series is really excellent. They begin with The Day After Tomorrow.

"The Winter of the World" by Michael Scott Rohan.

Quite old now, original in many respects. By far the best thing he has ever done. Set during the ice age, but in a society at medieval levels of technology.

A very underappreciated fantasy, but very good.
I agree, more people should read Winter Of The World. Best ever description I've read of Ice as a malevolent entity. There's at least 6 books in the series, I've got them.

The Dark Magician saga is amazing so is the Age ot the Five, I'm currently reading the Inheritance cycle which started of with eragon also really good. Chronicals of ancient Darkness pretty cool, and The god slayer chronicals are really good although i've been waiting for the 3rd book for god knows how long now its a bit annoying!!

It would help those of us who aren't familiar with the books if you would list their authors please.

Woops sorry,

Age of the five, Dark magician both by Trudy Canavan

Inheritance cycle by Christopher Paniloni

God Slayer, Banned and the Banished by James Clements

Chronicals of ancient darkness by Michelle Paver

Oh and one i forgot to add in before The Well of Echoes by Ian Irvine is really good.

Garth Nix - Abhorsen Trilogy. I've got my sister reading this at the moment, and I haven't found anyone yet who dislikes it.

Also Tamora Pierce, more toward the younger younger adults, but excellent all the same.

I'll second the Dark is Rising series and the Tomorrow series as well, they are both good.

my most highly recommened series is simon r. green's nightside seires, there very very good and addictive.

Earthsea Novels

I can hardly bear to see these mentioned in so brief a fashion! I read them as a YA and even now my own kids have grown up and read them I still return to them from time to time - they've been a huge influence on me over the years. If you ever saw the horrendous TV adaptation, erase that memory because the books are something rare and special. :)

By Ursula Le Guin, they are (in order):

A Wizard of Earthsea
The Tombs of Atuan
The Farthest Shore
Tehanu
Tales From Earthsea*
The Other Wind

*Tales From Earthsea is a series of short stories and The Other Wind won't make much sense if you haven't read Dragonfly which is one of those short stories.

Some of my favorite young adult fantasy series:

Isobelle Carmody: Obernewtyn Chronicles (another either way fantasy/sci-fi)
- Obernewtyn
- Farseeker
- Ashling
- The Keeping Place

There are now three new hardback books due in December of this year. While two of them in paperback form are out in August, Book 5 coming out before Book 6
The Keeping Place (Obernewtyn - Book Four)
Wavesong (Obernewtyn - Book Five)
The Stone Key (Obernewtyn - Book Six)

I've certainly enjoyed reading her previous books and look forward to these as well.

Maria V. Snyder
Poison Study, Magic Study, Fire Study

Jeaniene Frost
Halfway to the Grave, One Foot in the Grave, At Graves End (more yet to come)

Trudi Canavan
Magicians Guild, The Novice, The High Lord

Maggie Furey
Aurian, Harp of Winds, Sword of Flame, Dhiamarra

The Heart of Myrial, The Spirit of the Stone, The Eye of Eternity

Jasper Fforde (not quite fantasy but really good)
The Eyre Affair, Lost in a Good Book, Well of Lost Plots, Something Rotten, First Among Sequels

They are all the series that I love but there are plenty more out there. A good website to check out is Fantastic Fiction it tells you all of the series done by authors and in what order. Have fun!

The Trudi Canavan, age of five are really good but i would say only for the older young adults as there are some chapters i wouldn't want a 12/13 yeah old to read.

The Halfmen of O by Maurice Gee is a great fantasy trilogy, but he is a NZ author and the books may be hard to find outside of NZ/Australia . . . but totally recommend if you can get your hands on it.

i know these book aren't strictly fantasy but they are historical and its kind of out there but I liked them, they're Victoria, Victrix, Supreme Warrior by Frances Hendry. they're based around 400BC-ish, the time of queen Boudicca and the Romans.

Robin Hobb's three trilogies, The Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Trilogy and The Tawny Man Trilogies are superb. You don't need to read the middle trilogy but it does add to the whole experience. Hobb's stories are so character driven you can't help but fall in love with them. At the end of the final Tawny Man book - Fool's Fate you will be absolutely staggered and bereft and the ending will remain in your head for weeks and weeks - a truly wonderful, heartfelt experience.
