Not so important connections

Hopefully, he has reached as high as he can.

I do think he has a connection with Varys and it will be interesting what role he plays when Dany and Tyrion come charging into Westeros.

Forgive me if this is old news but, when the crannogmen was at the Harrenhal tourney:

"There he met her pack brothers: the wild wolf who led them, the quiet wolf beside him, and the pup who was youngest of the four."

I'm assuming the quiet wolf was Ned...

At the feast, "The crannogman saw a maid with laughing purple eyes dance with a white sword, a red snake, and the lord of griffins, and lastly with the quiet wolf...but only after the wild wolf spoke to her on behalf of a brother to shy to leave his bench."

I believe that is Ashara Dayne that Ned is dancing with. Perhaps this is where they first met? First she dances with her brother, Arthur Dayne and Lord Connington. Not sure who the red snake is though.

By the way the mystery knight is totally Lyanna....

I'm betting Varys is still around King's Landing sneaking about in disguise after he drops off Tyrion

Rain, I'm still not convinced that Cersei did it herself... she always gets other people to do her dirty work for her.

TK, A long, long time ago, in a thread far, far away I proposed that Bronn and Shae were former "little birds" of Varys. I still think the idea has merit. Of course, I also like the idea that Bronn and Shae were working for Tywin from the get go.

because at the very least, Bronn always worked for Himself first and foremost. its actually easily conceivable that Tywin positioned Bronn to keep and eye on Tyrion. Bronn just happened to be in the Inn when needed the most - an Inn that Tyrion almost had to pass through to get back to King's Landing, and Tyrion loves Inns... with their tap-rooms and abundant whores, and just happened to be one of the mercenaries who aided Catelyn in 'arresting' Tyrion. And just happened to become 'friendly' with the prisoner on the way to the Eyrie???... suspicious much.
Shae is also just as likely, for the same reasons - especially since Tywin is more than aware of Tyrion's whore fixation.

I didn't catch much of anything my first time through AFFC. It's really a book that can't be read years after you've finished ASOS. It's so much better reading it after having finished ASOS very recently. The slower pace and deeper machinations of the book are a welcome change from the breakneck speed and avalanche of events that occur in ASOS. I could see how people would be disappointed with it (like I was the first time through) if it's been four years since reading ASOS (like it was for me... I just didn't have time to reread the entire series when AFFC came out).

I had pretty much the exact same experience, especially about how hard it was to pick up on all the little stuff in AFFC after such a long break.

While, I could claim that the idea came to me all by myself, I am more humble than that and will give credit where credit is due. You, Master Boaz, planted that seed in my head and I still think it is a very strong probability.

Please, teach your poor Padawan in the ways of the Force.

TK, it's all in the confidence of the post. I don't know that the idea was mine first, but I claimed it and you guys accepted it as fact.

Okay, I'm looking for my posts on Bronn and Shae working for either Tywin or Varys or both.

Here is one from Bronn. Look at post #12.

Well, I cannot find the posts I'm looking for. So I'll just rehash it here.

What happens to Varys' little birds when they are no longer little? Mayhaps they fly off only to return in the right season (when they find out juicy information). Mayhaps Varys knew everything Tyrion was up to, but if Shae and Bronn were working for him, then he'd have definitely have known every little thing Tyrion was up to.

Bronn showed up when Tyrion was captured at the Crossroads. If he'd previously been in Varys' or Tywin's pay, then he'd know they'd pay well for his assistance or information in this case. Shae shows up for the first time with Bronn. They were at Tywin's camp. Tywin had just met Bronn in Tyrion's company. Tywin could have easily told Bronn that Tyrion's money came from him and thus Bronn's ultimate loyalty needed to be with Tywin. Tywin then gave Shae, his spy and lover, to Bronn to give to Tyrion. Then Tywin expressly forbade Tyrion to take Shae to KL... just like Cersei forbidding Robert to fight in the melee, Tywin knew Tyrion would bend over backwards to disobey him. Varys found Shae within minutes of her arrival... mayhaps she sent word to him. Bronn suggested murdering Joffrey in front of Varys. When Tyrion was on trial, neither Shae nor Bronn assisted him... neither did Varys nor Tywin for that matter. Bronn was knighted and married into a rich noble family. Shae ended up in Tywin's bed.

I don't have any proof of anything. But it seems to fit, imo, if Bronn and Shae were working for either Varys or Tywin... I don't know which one. But doesn't it all seem too coincidental?

Shae I can understand, although then it's amazing how well Tyrion was fooled.

Bronn I think is an opportunist. I don't know what he would have got out of allegiance to Tywin that he didn't get from allegiance to Tyrion. Of course, allegiance is a bit of an overstatement when it comes to Bronn.

I had pretty much the exact same experience, especially about how hard it was to pick up on all the little stuff in AFFC after such a long break.

I am totally vindicated here. I've been saying that since the first negative reception of AFFC by its detractors. I just thought I would point that out.

Sansa is smarter than she thinks. ASOS, somewhere in the begining, when she's talking with Margaery.
“Margaery, please,” she said, “you mustn’t.” It was hard to get the words out. “You mustn’t marry him. He’s not like he seems, he’s not. He’ll hurt you.”
“I shouldn’t think so.” Margaery smiled confidently. “It’s brave of you to warn me, but you need not fear. Joff’s spoiled and vain and I don’t doubt that he’s as cruel as you say, but Father forced him to name Loras to his Kingsguard before he would agree to the match. I shall have the finest knight in the Seven Kingdoms protecting me night and day, as Prince Aemon protected Naerys. So our little lion had best behave, hadn’t he?” She laughed, and said, “Come, sweet sister, let’s race back to the river. It will drive our guards quite mad.” And without waiting for an answer, she put her heels into her horse and flew.
<snip>
Ser Loras is a Tyrell, Sansa reminded herself. That other knight was only a Toyne. His brothers had no armies, no way to
avenge him but with swords. Yet the more she thought about it all, the more she wondered. Joff might restrain himself for a few turns, perhaps as long as a year, but soon or late he will show his claws, and when he does . . . The realm might have a second Kingslayer, and there would be war inside the city, as the men of the lion and the men of the rose made the gutters run red.
Sansa was surprised that Margaery did not see it too. She is older than me, she must be wiser. And her father, Lord Tyrell, he knows what he is doing, surely. I am just being silly.

Later The Littlefinger tells her the same thing.

“Mace Tyrell actually thought it was his own idea to make Ser Loras’s inclusion in the Kingsguard part of the marriage contract. Who better to protect his daughter than her splendid knightly brother? And it relieved him of the difficult task of trying to find lands and a bride for a third son, never easy, and doubly difficult in Ser Loras’s case.
“Be that as it may. Lady Olenna was not about to let Joff harm her precious darling granddaughter, but unlike her son she also realized that under all his flowers and finery, Ser Loras is as hot-tempered as Jaime Lannister. Toss Joffrey, Margaery, and Loras in a pot, and you’ve got the makings for kingslayer stew."

In ASOS, there’s an interesting story about Robert Baratheon.

After he got Davos out of dungeon, Stannis tells him about Summerhall.

“My brother had a gift for inspiring loyalty. Even in his foes. At Surnmerhall he won three battles in a single day, and brought Lords Grandison and Cafferen back to Storm’s End as prisoners. He hung their banners in the hall as trophies. Cafferen’s white fawns were spotted with blood and Grandison’s sleeping lion was torn near in two. Yet they would sit beneath those banners of a night, drinking and feasting with Robert. He even took them hunting.
These men meant to deliver you to Aerys to be burned,’ I told him after I saw them throwing axes in the yard. ‘You should not be putting axes in their hands.’ Robert only laughed. I would have thrown Grandison and Cafferen into a dungeon, but he turned them into friends. Lord Cafferen died at Ashford Castle, cut down by Randyll Tarly whilst fighting for Robert. Lord Grandison was wounded on the Trident and died of it a year after. My brother made them love him, but it would seem that I inspire only betrayal.

Later, Edric Storm tells the same thing when on class with Davos’ son and Shireen.
The ******* nodded. “It was when he’d first come home to call his banners. Lords Grandison, Cafferen, and Fell planned to join their strength at Surnmerhall and march on Storm’s End, but he learned their plans from an informer and rode at once with all his knights and squires. As the plotters came up on Surnmerhall one by one, he defeated each of them in turn before they could join up with the others. He slew Lord Fell in single combat and captured his son Silveraxe.”
Devan looked to Pylos. “Is that how it happened?”
“I said so, didn’t I?” Edric Storm said before the maester could reply. “He smashed all three of them, and fought so bravely that Lord Grandison and Lord Cafferen became his men afterward, and Silveraxe too. No one ever beat my father.”
