Favourite species in fantasy !!!

Small furry pigs wielding rapiers. They're too rare. Way too rare.
I was doing to say that you are seriously deranged, andrew, and the I remembered Reepicheep , from the Chronicles of Narnia!
And yes, I do know he is, in fact , a mouse!

Sorry, forgot to add that my own favourite fantasy species is the Wyrm, in all its myriad glories.

Altho i didnt really like the books, i absolutely luvd the veez characters in Trudi Canavan's "Age of five" series & i really wished there was more about them in the books...

I'm a big dragon fan & i luv McCaffrey's fire lizards too...

I have used zombies and werewolves in my current story though as I don't think any fantasy story can go without werewolves in the wild and zombies lurking in tombs.

Sure it can. I've never had a zombie or a werewolf in my fiction, and I'm struggling to recall a single fantasy novel I've read - barring Pratchett - that did have one, the other, or indeed both...

I like a plethora of different 'species' in both fantasty and sci-fi. In some of my own scribblings (I try to refrain from calling my work writing before it actually transcends into something atleast resembling a novel) I've tried using a large number of different species.

My most used creature (other than humans, of course) is the Elf (Tolkien-esque). I use this in various forms, most commonly Wood Elf, Sea Elf, High Elf and/or Dark Elf, but also in some more abstract forms.

That being said, I have to say I like humans, because of their sheer diversity. Every fantasy species is effectively based on one aspect of human nature - i.e elves believe in wisdom, dwarves believe in riches, and ogres tend to be stupid. With this in mind, each of these species tend to be limited in certain ways - not so with humans. Humans you can have a mix of all walks of life, of all personalities, and that is what I like about them.

However, to answer the OPs questions, my favourite fantasty/sci-fi species is the Magical Dragon. Cliche? Yes. However, they represent everything that Fantasy is to me. In short, Dragons Rule. <3.

I love trying to create my own, unique species whether it be evil orc like hordes easily controlled or intelligent races that have developed a seperate civilisation with their own traditions, beliefs, cloths and religion. I love getting down into the detail of a species and thinking about how their way of life can influence unconscious actions and day to day activities.

But, anyway....

Favourite species would have to be elves, wise and beautiful, skilled and deadly!

I forgot to add wolves to my list. Not strictly speaking a fantasy creature, but they do feature a lot in fantasy books.

well my fav species would have to be these because :

from buffy the vampire slayer : Vampires (original) but i like how they look and as david borenez played one he is ******* fitt !!!

girls please agree hehe

also im glad that posting in my threads !!

also from star wars i do like twi-leks and nautolans because they look so graceful esp tw-leks

and i love elves there spells and weapons !!

lovidge xxx

From fantasy? Definitely Tolkien's Ents. It was a joy to read every chapter with them in. I love how they walk, I love their names, I love the noises Treebeard makes ("Hrmm! Hoom!", I love how they speak and most of all I love their language. Any language where something as beautiful as "a-lalla-lalla-rumba-kamanda-lindor-burúme" means something as simple as hill is alright by me.

And my favourite creature from sci-fi has got to be the Ithorians from Star Wars (the way they speak is mesmerizing).

Oh! And the triple-breasted whores of Eroticon VI!

For me, I've always loved Tolkien's elves. Griffins, too, hold a special place in my heart. In fact, I have a griffin character who's a companion to an Elven rogue who saved his life. So, there. ^_^

Other than those, I've always loved centaurs, unicorns, and especially the pegasus.

Oh, and the phoenix. And dragons. And...

Oh, heck. I love 'em all. :p Don't even get me started on my favorite scifi species. lol

Nagas. Though, the way I envision them, has never been put in a novel. The closest have been in The Legend of the Five Rings rpg.

I have to say I have a soft spot for some of JK Rowlings creatures, namely the thestrals. Though my favourite animal of all time would be a dragon. I also love my creature I created for my story.

Myydraals (i think i spelt it wrong) are pretty cool

anyone who has read The Wheel of time series will know what i am on about

Myrdraals (I can't remember how to spell it, either:)) are one of the more interesting of the Wheel of Time beasties, even if they do remind me of something else.

Not a particular species, as such, but I like the idea of a member of a species being genetically adapted to look like a member of another. Iain M. Banks's Culture books have some of these (e.g. Look to Windward, not that it's one of my favourite Culture novels).

As someone who prefers SF to straight-F (ducks down in anticipation;)), I find it allows me to believe in a character's behaviour, even though they are physically different and so may have to react to their enviroment differently. (The opposite, in fact, of all those TV-based aliens, the ones with the cheese graters on their foreheads, who seem to be given a defined subset of human behaviour to follow....

Anyway, I'd better stop, as I feel a rant coming on.

The Drow, with their entire society based on treachery and tenuous family alliances, are still some of the most interesting to read about.
And from SF, the Killiks (I forget the spelling) from the Star Wars books were a fascinating read, as an insectoid hive race with their own "subconcious" hives.
