Jack Vance

Not according to wiki or SFsite.com when did he die? His newest book came out in Feb 2007.

I thought it was wierd a legend in the genre like Vance would die without it being a shocking news.

Oh you must, Wonderful book

I have started reading it.

I enjoy it much more than Dying Earth first tale i read. So far i have read only around 50 pages seemed longer since i get stuck on admiring the way he writes. Its writers like him that i like to call myself a prose fanboy. I like it when authors dazzle me with their prose. His is so sharp and poetic at the same time.

Interesting world, cant wait to see what Ghyl does in the future that leads to him in the opening scene of the book. So far only read to when Ghyl is shocked to see his father duping.

Tell us what you think when you finish it, or whenever

I have finished it.

Thought it was a wonderful story. Such worldbuilding i havent seen before in SF before not even in Foundation. It was exactly the kind of SF i like most. You know the ones that focus on social issues. People and their socities.

The best things was how you saw the opressed life the recipents had in Ambroy and when Ghyl went to other planet. Many times i thought man they are practicly slaves working in cotton fields and they are controlled like they arent allowed to think anything about but thier work.

The twist at the end was so shocking that i couldnt close my mouth. I thought of many twists but none was even near the one in the end. Man the guys behind it they were evil geniuses. To fool people that long.

I liked how normal Ghyl was, he wasnt a heroic hero that decieded very easy and fast how to make everything right. He struggled with his feelings about his world in the hole story. He was a normal good man.

Made me want to read the rest of Dying earth cause its the only Vance i have. Hope they are half as good as Emphyiro.

I've only read Big Planet, and that was years ago, but I remember enjoying it a fair bit. I found the first two volumes of the Planet of Adventure series under my bed this morning, so I'll probably read them now. I'm looking forward to them!

However there is a short story of his I came across in Flashing Swords 1 yesterday that I didn't really care for much (though I'm only halfway through it).

Thats great cause i recently bought Planet of Adventure collection. We can talk about it when we are done with with any of the books.

Poly i have to recomend Emphyrio it was a great tale, its one of the best SF i have read. If you liked Big Planet, try it. Its a Jack Vance classic and i see clearly why plus its not a series its a stand alone.

Glad you liked Emphyrio so much, I was moveed by the Characters and worlds presented, I'll have to read 'Tales of Dying Earth' and 'Lyonesse' books 1 & 2

after that, I'll have to read the Planet of Adventure series, The Demon Princes 1 & 2

'The Blue World' looks good as well, that might be still around on VG SF Special Edition (Yellow Cover)

Well said, I agree. My favourite character in the book is Amiante. He has a half page of speech, maybe, but he is brilliantly developed.

I was soo moved by the characters. Amiante was inspiring, he didnt say much but he was a very interesting character. The worlds was the star of the books for me along with Ghyl,Amiante. Cities like Ambroy, that planet Ghyl was forced to be with the The Lords and ladies, The moon, even earth was interesting. Emphyrio impressed and surprised me so much that i would have gotten half his work if they werent sold out in my bookshop. :p

Good to see that other people here are reading the same JV stories.

By the way have you read his other stories that are SF/Fantasy. I wonder if he has written a story that is alot Fantasy like. More fantasy than SF.

About The Dying Earth and the first story that i read confused the hell outta me sometimes it was so clearly SF with vats and everything other times it feels like a Conan story. Im a newbie to that kind of story.

I'm reading 'Tales of the Dying Earth' at the moment. I've finished 'Dying Earth' and am reading 'Eyes of the Overworld' right now. Just like many of you, I like his prose. I admit, I did have to get used to it. Usually I read pretty fast, but you really miss things if you try this with his books. Also, he has a lot of interesting ideas, it seems he puts more ideas in a single story than other authors do in a whole bookseries (I think this also has been mentioned before, but it was something I found striking). So, I'm really happy I started reading his books. Also read Lyonesse, part one. Tshai: Planet of Adventures is still on my bookshelf, waiting to be read. Anyone read this one?

I read the first book of Planet Adventure series. The first book is not near as good as Dying earth,Emphyrio. It has great prose and great world building but not as many good ideas. Atleast in the first book. Its is though very interesting world with many different races. It is still a good read not his best though. Who knows the other books in the series and omnibus might be great.

I was the same with the prose, took awhile to get used to it. I use to read fast too but with authors like Vance thats impossible cause you dont want to miss things.

Hope to read 'Tales of the Dying Earth' at some point Nov/Dec, it's a biggun though, will take commitment

I will read it this month too. Cause im expecting a patch of Zelazny,PKD,Silverberg books.

I want to finish Dying earth before that.

The Tschai cycle is not his best work

but mediocre Vance,Silverberg or Dick is still better than most works by others
Still, the tetralogy is WELL worth reading,Conn.
(i've got the DAW ones, with beautiful covers by H.R.van Dongen)

and have you heard about TO LIVE FOREVER?
