The greatest anime of all time

Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind has to be my most loved film as i remember watching it on VHS when i was about 10 and i still have the original VHS named Warriors of the wind and Nausicaa was actually named Zandra maybe an american dub i think, all my mates thought i was nutts when i tried to explain a cloud climber.

As for series i do love Dragonball Z, bleach and Full Metal Alchemist!

and is it possible to get Space adventure cobra with english dubbing i swear i remember seeing it in the early 90's?

Best Anime OAV (ALL TIME) Rurouni Kenshin 1st OAV.

Best Anime Series (of recent years) Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Grave of the Fireflies is my favorite anime movie, although Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is also spectacular.

So what do you think is the greatest anime of all time?

I'd have to be a traditionalist, I'm afraid, and say Ghost in the Shell, followed by Akira, simply because of the groundbreaking ideas.

I recently saw Akira for the first time. My general impression: WEIRD. That just about sums it up.

Weird.

My favorites are Paprika, Persepolis, Appleseed, and just about all of the Miyazaki films. Paprika has beautiful animation; Persepolis is an emotionally touching film; Appleseed is just awesome; and the Miyazaki films are always interesting and thoughtful.

It used to be that I would ask my self this very question without any prevalent or clear result... It was indeed very hard to ascertain which out of the many, deserved the title of "THE Best anime of all Time"... it WAS this way... that is until those geniuses at Production I.G decided to animate the manga written by the genius Masamune Shirow and ultimately gave birth to the masterpiece that is Ghost In The Shell - SAC 1st & 2nd GiG.

GiTS is indisputably the greatest anime to have graced the face of the anime world... before GiTS the title holder IMO was Trigun closesly followed by Cowboy Bebop. Other viable competetors for the title could be:

Noir
Berserk
Samurai Champloo
Neon Genesis
Hellsing
Ruroubi Kenshin (OVA) - Trust & Betrayal
Last Exile
Monster
Lupin

Lol, Harebrain!:D

In any case, there's no denying that GitS is one of my favourite shows, and I loved the way the end of the 2nd Gig almost lead on to the start of the manga. Of the others in your list, I did enjoy Samurai X - Trust and Betrayal, and Neon Genesis Evangelion is a classic. I would have ranked Cowboy Bebop over Trigun, though, but the people here who know me will know that that isn't really a surprise.:)

And lastly, welcome to the Chronicles, Laughing Man!:)

Edited to add: Sorry, Lillyanna, it's been a long time since I looked at this thread. Weird just about sums up my first impressions of Akira. I've seen it since, and whilst I didn't understand all of it, it definitely opened the way for a lot of other anime to become mainstream in the west, in my opinion.

TY, look forward to sharing opinions with real anime/scifi fans unlike those i've had experience with in the past whos knowledge of anime unfortunately do not reach beyond the limited expanses of naruto & bleach.

Trigun V Cowboy Bebop: The anime world pre-GiTS was one of conflict and struggle... two huge forces equal in power endlessly battling for the title of THE greatest. It was in this period of turmoil where it was uncertain which force was greater but my personal favourite (note: personal fav != greatest) was always Trigun... all this became irrelevant tho when GiTS came along with its immense power and took the title.

In conclusion to this terrible metaphor I would say Trigun & Cowboy Bebop currently share second place for the title of "Greatest anime of all Time"... My personal fav remaining Trigun while yours remains Cowboy Bebop :)

I can't stand either one of the shows. :p

Welcome to Chronicles, Laughing Man!

GiTS is in my top five, but my personal favorite is Blood+, with Eureka 7 running a very close second (but only because Blood+ has more consistency and no silliness - kind of like GiTS in some ways). These two just have more of an emotional appeal for me, while GiTS has a strong intellectual appeal - as well some really cool action scenes and drama!

Personal fave=greatest? I'm not sure...

Yakitate!! Japan has some fantastic linguistic wrangles in amongst the standard "mildly clueless hero who has enormous latent talents" plot.

Currently watching Samurai Champloo as LoveFilm sends out the discs, in terms of movies I still think the sheer, joyful whimsy of My Neighbour Totoro is hard to beat.

Oh, and the short film they play in the Ghibli museum, Mei to Konekobasu (Mei and the Kittenbus) is pretty good. I had to work in that geek credential somehow...although sadly my ticket turned out to contain frames from Tales From Earthsea - epic fail!

Cowboy Bebop or Trigun has my vote..

or maybe the new FMA

or maybe.. dare i say it.. Pokemon series 1 xD

I generally dislike anime, but Ghost in the Shell is great.

Talking about movies, Miyazaki's Mononoke Hime is my favorite.

Yes, Grave Of The Fireflies and Spirited Away are both masterpieces and probably my personal favourites.

For pure old fashioned action and adventure it's hard for me to go past the wonderful Porko Russo and Castle Of Cagliostro.

I own quite a few of the Studio Ghibli productions, which reminds me I must dust them off for a much needed rewatch....:)

Okay, When the Cicadas Cry has risen above Blood+ for me.

But if you want to talk about feature films, Spirited Away definitely tops them all for me too (although I've probably said so at least half a dozen times, so I hope no one decides to throw anything at me). :D

Studio Ghibli productions are so overrated to me, people in the west that dont usually watch anime seem think they are masterpieces because they are so big, marketed in west. Maybe because they look like Disney style wise...

Princess Mononoke was great, Spirited Away are some cute film not near that level.
