Yes, I'm finally going to do it. Discworld here I come!

I'm going to read the entire series, starting with, of course, The Color Of Magic. In this thread I will keep everyone familiar and unfamiliar with the Great Great Pratchett up-to-date of my ventures into the Discworld!

Day one:

Okay, nothing too much yet; I have only ordered the following:

The Color of Magic. Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2000. ISBN 0061020710
The Light Fantastic. Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2000. ISBN 0061020702.
Equal Rites. Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2000. ISBN 0061020699.
Mort. Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2001. ISBN 0061020680.
Sourcery. Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2001. ISBN 0061020672.
Wyrd Sisters. Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2001. ISBN 0061020664.
Pyramids. Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2001. ISBN 0061020656.
Guards! Guards! Pratchett, Terry. HarperTorch: 2001. ISBN 0061020648.

The awaiting starts...

I've really enjoyed the earlier books (I've only got as far as Witches Abroad so far (with a couple missed out)) but I haven't been disappointed by any of them. I especially love the Rincewind books, although Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are fantastic too :D

Enjoy, Marky!

You'll notice the subtle change of style as you progress through. I'm at "Light Fantastic", re-reading them straight through for about fifth time (though I might have to pause to read all of HP in time for book 7's release). The earlier books are, I would say, more clearly discernable as fantasy, whereas the later ones move perhaps more into something else, satire or parody.

They're that good, eh? I've heard a lot (A LOT) about these books, but I've held off under the impression that they're mainly for a young adult readership. Maybe I'll take the plunge.

On one level, I suppose they are: but there are so many other layers, allusions, spoofs, parodies, cliches, quotes and jokes in them, they can be read by all ages, and every one will get something different from them.

Don't delay: plunge today!:D

Day two:

The mail arrived just now; there's no books. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold my wits...

Patience, Marky, patience. You've been waiting all this time to kick off.:) I agree with the others that the earlier dicworld books are lighter and funnier and later ones are darker and deeper, still funny though. IMO The Colour of Magic is a bit 'thin' but from The Light Fantastic pTerry - the technical term we use here and its copyright lawfully belongs to Chrispen according to rumours;) gets better n better.

I fear I'm not the originator of the term, merely the importer and local distributor.
I went to L-space (the generally reliable source of all wisdom on the discworld) to search the etymological origins of the term, but, although the name is in general usage, no inventor was given.
It obviously came into being after "Pyramids", but more than that I cannot say, and will not guess.

Day three:

There was no mail today, so I feared the post office had caught fire. But when I called them to find out, no one knew nothing about any fire. I'll be filing a complaint later; they obviousy have losted my package!

This is awesome Marky. I've done all the books up to 'Soul Music' (but I cheated and read 'Night Watch' and 'Going Postal'). Interested to see your progress! I do know its possible to virtually inhale Pratchett, what with no chapters and the engaging writing.

I got up to Guards! Guards! while I was in australia... I should start again some time:)

I've read them all already, but a friend of mine wanted to read sourcery. So I picked it up in a shop because I hadn't read it in a while and vaguely remembered it being a good book. Now I've bought it, and also The Last Continent, and I can't put it down because even though I know the ending, getting there is so much fun :D

Wizard: [rhetorically] "What would humans be without love?"
Death: "Rare."
