The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Mmmhmm.

Day 3: Perhaps if I said I wasn't kidding when I told HJ to stop giving away hints? Unknowingly (or otherwise:eek:), he actually did.....

Day 5: A slowly-developing master plan, I see.

Two more hints, then. First, the actual quote reads

....only done 'under the Shadow'.

Second, culture is key....

Day 6, er, make that 7: Oh, come now. It's not that well hidden. Stoor country will get you close, as will a word encountered more often than spoken or written in today's world....

Day 8: Did you all fall into the Helcaraxë on the way to The Chrons?:D Winter (here, at least) is thawing out, after all.

Pointers from your matriarch might help.....

Day 9: Am beginning to get a complex here, folks. Is it time for me to confer with Nesacat, inquiring whether summoning a Kraken whilst wearing read undergarments is the cure for a stalled trivia challenge? Yikes! I hope not!

(You junior members will have to read back for that reference while I, sophomoric fool that I am, will once again demonstrate that I think I know everything while the reality is that I'm clueless....).

Maybe Py could be the Kraken?:D

Another clue? Really?! Oh, OK, if you insist....

You won't find this reference in the book of numbers.....

OK, Day 11 finds this among the longest dry spells ever for this thread (if not in fact THE longest). One more attempt at a hint, since my last one, read differently from my intention, may actually be damaging instead of helpful. If no biters, I will abdicate the floor and toss my turn high in the air in hopes that someone will catch it....

It's not in the titular biblical book of numbers, but is very much in the book that's most prominently referenced by numbers....

OK, after much head-scratching and going down dead ends it now turns out to be from a book I don't have with me. If you can hold out a couple of days longer I should be able to get it back, but whether I'll be able to find the answer or not I don't know.

There is somebody out there, after all....:D

Though I suspect both Pyan and Marky have already figured this one out and are just enjoying watching me dance....;)

Umm... I'm afraid I tend not to answer these days, Grimmy, until everyone else has had a chance - (sounds big-headed, I know, but not intended as such..) - but would I be right in thinking that it has to do with the absence of reference to sssomeone'ss father?

Re the intention, already understood, so I will not infer a large head (although 37 ton nether deities as a matter of course tend to come with mega noggins:D).

Re the challenge, I think 11 days, mostly without participation and leaving me in the shameful position of having to quintuple post (if I counted correctly:rolleyes:), is more than enough time. Ssso, sssince your thinking isss ssspot on, you certainly can proceed with a quote, or defer and give HB the ssshot at finding sssaid passssssage as the whim takesss you....

Well, as I think that you may implode if left any longer, plus the fact that HB said he still may not have it...

It's actually an odd answer, to cover the way the question is set...

What was only done under the Shadow?

Other forms of marriage and pairings/multiple official bonding, such as polyandry and (presumably) polygamy.

'Monogamy' was at this period in the West universally practised, and other systems were regarded with repugnance, as things done only 'under the Shadow'.

Letters, No. 214,(draft) to A.C. Nunn.

Implosion would be messy, indeed.

The answer, however, is not messy in the least, and is accurate. A wedding bell, and the floor to you, Mr. Py....

Thank you...

Where would I find rough steps behind a monolith?

After wandering from Erech to the Carrock (I hadn't quite appreciated how many standing stones and rough steps there are in Middle Earth :)), I think I have the answer:

About midday, creeping behind a great stone that stood like a pillar, Bilbo came on what looked like rough steps going upwards.

The Hobbit, Chapter 11, On the Doorstep

So the answer is: you would find them on the western slopes of the Lonely Mountain.

'There was a battle here three nights ago,' said Gimli, 'and here Legolas and I played a game that I won only by a single orc. Come and see how it was! And there are caves, Merry, caves of wonder! Shall we visit them, Legolas, do you think?'
'Nay! There is no time,' said the Elf. 'Do not spoil the wonder with haste! I have given you my word to return hither with you, if a day of peace and freedom comes again.'

The Return of the King, Book V, Chapter II, The Passing of the Grey Company, pp. 758-9

I guess, just to be technically correct, I should include that the "Elf" (and therefore, the answer) was Legolas....sorry, was tired last night!

*Ooohs and Aaaahs over the polished bell*

Right, thank you, Stylus. Question coming later on tonight when I'm back with my books......
