The chronicles word counter!

Pootling is good, Mouse. Slow and steady gets there.

50000 words and rising.
50k! 50k! only another 70k to go.....
Yikes! How did I miss that? Well done -- a good milestone passed!

Provisional title: Black as Night
Genre: Fantasy (no longer just one corzzato...)
Word count: 50,016
Status: for the characters -- the men still not at the city, and dastardly doings cause further delay. Chais waking up.
.......... for me -- trying to develop a magic system that works and makes sense.

Gradually getting somewhere.

Provisional title: Black as Night
Genre: Fantasy (monster-making now)
Word count: 60,021
Status: for the characters -- the men: one trial, one hanging, one monster. Chais: lace-making.
.......... for me -- a writer in search of a plot.

Well done, TJ! 60k is more than "somewhere".

Keep it up, Mouse!

Here's my first entry for my new one. After months of my brain feeling like soup, I feel I'm getting somewhere too.

Title: The Empyreus Proof
Genre: S&S (Steamships'n'Shamans)
Word count: 10,500
Status: at last reached the end of tricky chapter2 -- the wolf-monkeys have been destroyed by the blood-nourished proto-feminist vegetation, but someone has done something potentially very unwise with her lips.

Well, that's the Hollywood pitch taken care of...

Good going! Only another 189,500 to go.

Thanks TJ and HB. Now on 5347 words. Distracted by the internet...

Word count: 10,500

These sort of numbers worry me. You've got two chapters in 10,500. I've got four chapters in half that.

Gosh, you must be really weak-willed, I never get -- OH NO, WAIT, IT'S HAPPENING NOW!!!

These sort of numbers worry me. You've got two chapters in 10,500. I've got four chapters in half that.

Those sort of numbers worry me too, because I think my chapters might be too long. (Though that does include a prologue.)

Actually, Mouse, I was thinking your chapters seemed a bit short when you put up the last piece -- mine tend to be in the 3900 to 6500 range, and many of my scenes are longer than your chapters. But I don't think it's something to worry about. If that's where they break naturally, then that's how long they have to be. You can't fill them with flannel just to achieve some arbitrary number.

They do break naturally and my chapters have always been short (though so far, these ones are longer than usual - for me) but I see everyone else's numbers and wonder how you guys do it!

Other people use more description than me, I think. That's what I worry about with my writing. I can't seem to... What's the word, I don't want to say pad. 'Depth' probably. I don't have enough depth.

Trilogy Title: Untitled
First book in trilogy: Untitled
Genre: Fantasy
Word count: 13,390
Status: Trying to finish up chapter 3, it's coming slowly

This is the first time I've tried to write a book, it's fun and frustrating at the same time.

Chapters are as long as chapters are - some writers don't use them at all, and there are chapters in published material of one word. My finished one has chapters at under 1,000 words and one at 7,000 - usually they are around 2-4,000.

@Mouse mine are always longer on the rewrite, redrafting stage of my novels, first run through lacks description and depth as I place finding the story first.

Title: Fresh Cream
Genre: Detective Fiction (I know I will be getting back to fantasy soon well actually sci-fi).
word count: 31K (sixteen chapters)
Status: Currently dirty first draft, at present I'm trying to rescue one of my characters who has been kidnapped. Aiming to get it done and rewritten by April as I want to do NaNo's script frenzy. It's about halfway through as my second drafts tend to be much longer.
Goal: Get to 40K this week.

Mouse, I wouldn't worry about your chapters being too short - that's just your own personal style. Each to their own, I say! If anyone should be worried, it's me. I'm lucky if my chapters fall below 10k! Now, that is long! Some would say too long, but it's the way I write, and it works for me, so I'm not panicking about it. I think my longest chapter in my latest work currently stands at 13k... wowzaa!
I'm only at chapter 5 at the moment, but it's just over 50k.
Long or short, it's whatever floats your boat. And whatever helps the story to flow as well as it possibly can.

HKV (MC2)
The North Will Rise Again!
Status: 55000 words, deep in Chapter 9.
The shieldmen are marching North. Now Cassia's having second thoughts. Bit late for that, though...
Hoping to reach 60k before the end of January, at which point i will turn aside and spend a month editing MC1 for submission...

New novel:

Title: Not sure yet.
Genre: Sexy P.I thriller set in seventies Africa.
Startdate: Mid December.
Wordcount: 10,500 - Seven chapters.
Status: flowing nicely.

Yeah I'll worry about it at the end, I think! I'm more concerned with my use of 'then' at the moment.

Anyway:

Title: The Beautiful Man
Word count: 6275 including notes

Provisional title: Black as Night

Word count: 60,021
Status: for the characters -- the men: one trial, one hanging, one monster. Chais: lace-making.

.......... for me -- now what?

Yes, that one... :D

Surprised myself when that disaster of a synopsis turned into a 578 word masterpiece though - or at least I hope it is. Far cry from the original 1200 words.

Angry Robot have an upper limit of around 140k though so if I can tighten a bit more of the book I might be in with a chance.

anyway, while I'm posting...

down to 155,171 words now, another 700 odd words gone to the editing ringer! :D
