The chronicles word counter!

Angry Robot have an upper limit of around 140k though so if I can tighten a bit more of the book I might be in with a chance.

Tighten by all means, but their wording is a bit vague. What they say they don't want is "Anything shorter than novel length (approx 95,000 to 140,000 words, but there is some flexibility in this)." So it sounds like there might be quite a bit of flexibility at the upper end.

BTW, in revisiting their page to find that out, I've just discovered that they've changed from wanting epic fantasy to classic fantasy.

A friend of mine submitted a novel about a telepathic Private Investigator to Angry Robot. She was rejected because they already had a zombie Private Investigator.

just posted about this in the other thread, it still includes epic, but now includes a few other sub-genres of fantasy as well.

Yeah, it was more a suggestion I got from feedback to reduce the word count by about 10k rather than Angry Robot.

And another few thousand words to the editing grind.

Title: A Touch of Ice
Start Date: August 2011
Genre: Epic Fantasy with a mix of urban and high fantasy
Word Count: Down to 148,377 - 22 Chapters.
Status: Finishing touches on editing.

Status: Lots of dialogue. Little description. On the plus side, chapter seven is almost 2000 words long. That's long for me!

I used to write 3,000 word chapters. Now I write 8,000... (some chapters are smaller, especially now that they had been thoroughly edited.)

Title: The Beautiful Man
Genre: Paranormal something
Word count: 8699
Status: Lots of dialogue. Little description. On the plus side, chapter seven is almost 2000 words long. That's long for me!

My first drafts always look like that. 90% dialogue. 10% stage directions (smile, cry, punch Character B in nose).

Description? Setting? Nobody told me those things go into a first draft! ;)

Urban fantasy meets epic fantasy... no way...

*looks at the genre tag for his own book*

That's my idea! :p

p.s. looks like we both had the idea at the same time too, August start date.

Would be interesting to compare concepts, see how we both dealt with the idea.

btw, word count: 146,237. Almost done. (145k target)

hmmmm...

title: untitled
genre: fantasy
word count: 691
status: dumped most likely

title: m (working title)
genre: undecided
word count: 1121
status: w.i.p.

title: the littlest fbi agent
genre: crime/action adventure/ sci fi
word count: 1036 (without title/table of contents/chapter title/acknowledgments---with those is 1097)
status: w.i.p.

title: eyes of the law
genre: crime
word count: 7331 (with chapter titles/author's note)
status: my most active w.i.p.

wow that's a lot of stuff most at the top will be dumped though

UPDATE

Eyes of the law is down to 709 words because I started over, it just wasn't very flowy and needs a whole lot of work.

I need to see if I can't find those other three..... why must my computer be so un-organised

I've been working on the book full time (putting in about 30-40 hours a week), got the time to do so. So really, its actually taken me longer than it would if I was an experienced author. Steven Erikson said in an interview that it takes him about 8 months (including editing) to finish one of his epics, and they are between 200-300k word counts.

Update: Broken 145k target and still going. Down to 142,719. Second half of book feels quite polished now (friend doing final checks). Editing halfway done on first half. Will be doing a second round of editing before I declare finished though.

DONE :cool::cool::cool:

Of course me and a another person are still double checking to make sure its really done.

Might get time to do another chapter for the novella now.

Still editing the same short story I was working through the last time I posted... (Not been doing well with the edit or indeed writing malarkey recently).

But just started something new:

Type: Novel
Genre: Fantasy
So far: Planned and built a skeleton for the first five chapters
Chapter Count: 1 Completed (First Draft)
Page Count: 1
Word Count: 422

(See I can write small chapters!!!) :)

The Beautiful Man now 9296 words. Woo hoo! Only another 80k to go.

WiP up to 2,500 words (How exciting!)

ANd 4 pages of the short fully edited and corrected.

Novel: Girl on the Wastes
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Fiction
Current Word Count: 6,546
Status: Going really well, the plot is mapped out just writing it to the deadlines I've been given. After the story is written then it's on to the second draft :D

So Perp, your main character is a necromancer?

You said he planned and build a skeleton.

And it took him five chapters to do it. That's the sort of craftsmanship you just don't see in young necromancers today. :)

Thanks for making me choke on my drink, David. At least it's never dull here when you're around.

Brilliant! Really made me chuckle, which is even funnier because you are closer to the truth than you know!

You're welcome, Warren. :)

I never knew you were an old necromantic at heart, Perp. So, maybe that chuckle should be more of a maniacal laugh? Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!
