Anyone else disappointed with Lies of Locke Lamora/Ash?

Well that list shows Royal Apprentice, Game of Thrones, and Bourne Ultimatum?? Are any of those even close to Lies of Locke Lamora???? I think not

Reading the thread, would appear the OP just wanted a thread full of how terrible Lies is, and is completely averse to the idea that he could possibly be wrong.

Cause we all know how reliable reviews online are.. everyone loves Locke Lamora online and at these sites.. pushing it like it was amazing...

well, it wasn't and no research online could change that. 2/3 of each page had useless description and almost nothing happens in the first 50 pages.. I don't enjoy wading through endless padding to get to good stuff... Poor editing and poor writing. 50 pages is plenty to at least intrigue the reader.

People just seem to want to hype and push new authors to increase readership in the genre or something... I'm much much more careful to what I push as the next great thing.. I only recommend the best. This is as far from the best as can be!

Everything in that quote is entirely subjective , I'm pretty sure the likes of Lynch , Abercrombie and Rothfuss have all received a lot of internet noise due to the enjoyment of the readers, not any conspiracy for genre fans to push new authors and increase readership within the genre.

The bolded quote is my favourite however , and again is completely subjective. There is no doubt Lies has been very well received and (in my opinion) is one of the best genre novels of the last 4-5 years. I guess i just find it amazing when people come on to message boards , make a discussion thread , but are against actual discussion and try to push their own views as stonewall fact.

For the record I thought LoLL was an entertaining début novel, in a well fleshed out world , and full of "oh cool" moments, I loved the world building, I loved the characterisation and especially the dynamic between The Gentlemen Bastards.

All in all LoLL left me wanting more , and desperate to pick up Red Sea immediately , which all in all is the best an author can hope for .

I must have missed this the first time through. Since you have such a high opinion of your own tastes and feel you could educate us all on what a good book is, perhaps you could give us some recommendations on what you consider the best or the next big thing?

Personally I love Locke Lamora, but I do agree on some of the OP's points. Lynch does tend to oversell things on the descriptive side, and it often jars the pace of the action. The 2nd book also suffered from an overly complicated plots, with two stories occuring at the same time. It couldn't decide if it was Ocean's Eleven or Pirates of the Carribean. I hope in the next book he sticks to one story, even if the novel is a good deal shorter because of it. And I hope the Gentlemen Bastards get some new members again - as great as Jean and Locke's relationship is, Lynch needs to throw some other characters between them now.

Books I have stopped reading-

City of Illusions
The Lathe Of Heaven
Wizard of Earthsea
I can sort of understand the first two. In particular City of Illusions is not immediately accessible. I think they're fantastic books - Lathe of Heaven is simply a classic - but I realize they're not for everybody.

But Wizard of Earthsea?
