Thank you ^^ I appreciate that, and will reserve his books next time I go to the library. Maybe if I get money soon, i'll even buy them lol.

No problem!

UM.. have you had a chance to check out my thread Clasic Fantasy Pre 1980s in the Books & Literature forum yet? It will specialise one classic fantasy author/week that are more of the mid 1970's and prior to this time including authors from previous centuries. In part it is an attempt to garner a greater awareness for younger readers in addition to other readers of the fantsasy Genre who may not be aware of these authors.

Do you think this is a good idea? Any feedback by way of a post would be much appreicated, but if you could post your thoughts on that thread rather than here.

Bye for now.:) :)

I've just finished Lirael by Garth Nix. I have to be honest and say I prefer the Keys to the Kingdom series than this Old Kingdom series

Sabriel had some good aspects and the characters were better crafted. But Lirael didnt feel as well written, and the characters didnt gell as well :(

You're totally right. It was lighter and had more originality almost :)

I found that too, has a lighter feel to it. I also think it seems more colourful somehow. The world that Nix has created for Keys to the Kingdom series sparkles :D

I really enjoyed the Keys to the Kigdom novels thus far. I have read Mister Monday, and Grim Tueday thus far, and have Drowned Wednesday, yet to be read. I find the series enjoyable (although not as significant as His Dark Materials by Pullman IMHO), but in reagrds to orginal perhaps, but the strength is really in offering a fun read, that has some refernces to other works of literature to please adults or the more read. The inclusion of Captain Shelvocke, Samuel Coleridge and Wordsworth's classic creation in Grim Tuesday. In Mister Monday when first depicting the exterior of the House it felt reminiscent of speculative fiction master, Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast ever so slightl. I reviewed both of these books and would love some feed back by Nix fans.

Just started reading Drowned Wednesday, only a few pages in and already it shouts colourful and imaganative at me :D

I finished Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen ages ago, but I remember enjoying them very thoroughly.

I've read Sabriel and Lirael - they were fair reads but nowhere as entertaining as his new series. I still have Abhorsen to read, and will get to it eventually :)

Garth Nix is perhaps i would say favorite fantasy writer but not quite. i do love all of his works, however i havent read shade's children yet. i have read though, the abhorsen triology (companion book for about nicholas is out in the usa) and the seventh tower series books 1-7 which i read as one full book, and i loved it so. i would say lirael is one of my favorite reads to date but in general i am a very dedicated fantasy fan.

I'm interested in shade's children too cant get it at present though

I really enjoyed Shade's Children. It is fast-paced, full of action and intrigue. I cared about the 4 youngsters as they struggled to survive, and I was deeply immersed in the strange future world that the author created. My big disappointment was that no logical explanations were offered as to how and why such a world came into existence in the first place. Who are the Overlords? Why are the kids endowed with special abilities? There are just too many questions left unanswered. I have read many futuristic novels like this, The Giver being one of them, that left me very unsatisfied, and I think probably a plausible explanation was beyond the authors.
The Seventh Tower series contains 6 books and is re-published in 2 hardcover volumes in the US. I just finished the first volume, containing the first 3 books, and I enjoyed it enough that I want to finish the series. The Keys to the Kingdom series, on the other hand, is just way too far-fetched and fantastical that I did not even want to suspend my belief to enjoy it.

I think that's why I enjoy some of Nix's works because I can let go and believe in the unbelievable, it's one of the nice things about fantasy :D

Well it's not as if there's anything else holding you back right now!...:p

Yes do read Keys of The Kingdom it's very good. Then again Garth's an Aussie so like what else did you expect?...;)

Has anyone read the new Garth Nix novel that came out in the last couple of weeks? Any good? I've not read the previous ones yet, and was wondering whether to jump straight in with the new one, even if it is the fourth in a series.

I've read 'The Creature in the Case' as well, the 4th in the Abhorsen series. It is a tiny little pamphlet book, cost me about a pound, but it is, surprisingly, quite as good as the others. Works nicely.

Sabriel was the best.

Garth Nix's Abhorsen series only gets better throughout the series, finishing with Abhorsen, by far the best book I have lived to read. I thoroughly suggest reading Abhorsen if you've read the first and second book.

In fact you have to. The narrative stops abrubtly, mid-adventure, at the end of Lirael.
