Robert E. Howard

Don't know how reliable a site this is, but the one sheet for the (theoretically) to be released or at any rate filmed in 2008 Solomon Kane movie seems to be trying to hit on every tough guy action movie cliche out there...

Moviehole.net - Solomon Kane gets posterized!

Typical im gone a couple of days and i miss three pages of REH disc :p

About the movies, im glad i didnt read REH as a kid else that Conan movie would have made go blind with anger if i had. Arnie looked so lame. I was like who could have written crap like that.

If you read comics, read DH comics. That Conan is the real Conan. With both new and real REH Conan stories. Writers who gets Conan.

Right now im enjoying Conan and The Midnight God mini series.

I would also say that some of the early Roy Thomas/Barry Windsor Smith adaptations were quite good. While his art takes some getting used to, after seeing Frazetta and such, he did have a good feel for Conan and his world, and there's quite a lot of his artwork which brings out that prismatic, jewelled, dreamlike feel Howard could often have....

I liked Purefoy in Rome. He's not my first choice for the role, but he has the chops to pull it off.

Oh... dear... God....

Well, what do I expect? This is the film/tv industry, where they generally have about as much understanding and insight into fantasy and sf as to think Independence Day is a totally new and amazing concept....

Anyone aware of any other new Howard books coming out in the near future....?

In the meantime, in case there are others interested, I'll post some links to some available now, covering a variety of Howard's writing:

Boxing Stories - University of Nebraska Press

Lord of Samarcand and Other Adventure Tales of the - University of Nebraska Press

The Black Stranger and Other American Tales - University of Nebraska Press

The End of the Trail - University of Nebraska Press

The Riot at Bucksnort and Other Western Tales - University of Nebraska Press

HOWARD, Robert E.

For anyone interested in these, there is some inevitable crossover in contents, so you might want to look up the TOCs before buying....

AS much as I like REH, Soloman Kane was the one that I did not like that much same goes for the film, it's a case of differing tastes I suppose.
So if they do make the film I will give a body swevre.

Perhaps I got hooked on Solomon Kane because my first encounter was the Panther edition of the Skull-Face and Others omnibus, where you get a fair number of stories of several of Howard's heroes: Kull, Conan, Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane, an incarnation of James Allison, Steve Costigan....

Skull-Face Vol. 1- Panther

Skull-Face Vol. 2 - Panther

Skull-Face Vol. 3 - Panther

Was hooked on Conan first and then I met Kull and finally Solomon Kane. Am definitely hooked on Solomon Kane now.

As for the movies, I have not seen any older adaptations. My experience being the ones with Arnie in them. I did like the music in the first movie and the general idea.

The second movie was terrible and the third is best forgotten. At least the first had some redeeming qualities even if they did steal wholesale from Kull.

I just wish Hollywood would allow barbarians to be barbarians. Conan and Kull are and no apologies there. You cannot go and try to whitewash them. They were not 'good' nor 'bad' in the Hollywood good guy, bad guy sense. They were men of their times and harsh times. They did what they needed to do.

In that link are Soloman stories in right order?

I was thinking about getting Soloman book next. Are his stories short stories or shorter novel?

I saw that i just dont want a huge collection that will feel like weighing a ton when i read it like my Conan collection.

You think the first book The Moon of Skulls have illustrations too ? I like seeing that in my books.

Well I have the Del Rey one and it's not huge. Yes the Conan is huge especially if you got the hardback. This is not huge at all. Regular paperback size; just a larger format.

This is the only Solomon Kane I have. I bought it because it was very well put together and illustrated. Was well worth it.

All the Del Rey Howard books are well worth it. :)
