Deadhouse Gates

Lots of people have problems with GoTM apparently it makes more sense if you re-read it at some point, although I haven't as yet,
DG is one of my fav out of the series but Memories of Ice and Bonehunters are probably in the top two spots. Hope you enjoy reading Erikson.

I'm very much enjoying DHG, more so then GoTM, but I sort of feel a lot of GoTM (not happening nearly as much in DHG) went over my head which is frustrating.

Definatley!!
GoTM sort of drops you in the deepend, I remember getting the TISTE ANDI and the T'LAN IMASS mixed up all the time. Also SE's style of writing, the jumping between characters can be a bit off putting especially in such a vast scope of a book, the good thing is that not only does the writing improve as the series goes on, but that many parts that you didn't understand in the earlier books get resolved or made clearer as you go on.

:)

I wish I understood more about how mortals become Ascendants. I can only hope this will be elucidated further on.

Not really, i don't understand it and i've read them all .
If you get a chance, have a look at Ian C. Esselmont's KNIGHT OF KNIVES, it's a nice short book on the asscension of ShadowThrone and Cotillion which is based before GoTM

Sounds like they are collaborating like they did in the Matrix movies where they were telling the story from the movie and the game.

I finished GoTM a few months ago with mixed thoughts. After buying Deadhouse Gates shortly after, I read a few pages and then just let it sit on my bookshelf. I really wanted to read and like the book (and the series), but I guess after reading GoTM I just wasn't that "hooked."

I've kept hearing good things about the books since, so I decided to pick up DG again. I'm only 200ish pages in and can already tell I will like this one a lot more. I honestly don't want to put it down. In general, the writing seems much better, although it may just be that the first book accustomed me to his writing style.

Is this normal? Hopefully I will enjoy the rest of the series as much as I have DG. Like I said, I was very weary after GoTM, but am very glad that I continued.

Hopefully I won't be too disappointed later. (?) :)

Any thoughts? Thanks!

You'd be surprised at how many people we get who just can't get into GotM - that's completely normal.

A lot of people prefer DHG to GotM, and seem to get into it more as the series progresses. I've got to the point where I can slip into an Erikson with no problem - it's books from other authors which seem a bit strange! :p

Memories of Ice is after DHG, and it seems to be the favourite of most.

^ I actually just picked up MOI today. :)

I'm currently in the middle of the "Chain of Dogs" section of DHG, but I'm going on a cruise for a week and I'm sure I'll finish and want more Erikson.

I've recommended this series to several friends, but a lot can't seem to get through the first, and they're huge fantasy fans. Though a few are loving it have already passed me.

The best way to get friends through the first, I find, is to stand over them, menacingly, with a spiky whip. :)

The Chain of Dogs is one of the more poignant moments in the series. There are others, but you'll find those for yourself. The thing I really love about DHG, though, is the surrealism of the wounded warren that Heboric, Gesler, Kulp and co. find themselves in when fleeing the Otataral island. The whole Icarium, Mappo and Iskaral Pust arc is similarly strange. The only book which has come near to that, for me, is The Bonehunters (which is my favourite of the series).

^ That's good news.

After reading various polls of people's favorites in the series, I was worried that they (in general) just got worse after DHG and MOI...

No way, Although DHG and MoI are two of the preferred stories for most people, Erikkson's writing improves throughout the books, Like Lenny Bonehunters is one of my Fav books while Reapers Gale is also High on my list.
