Eastercon 2009, Bradford, 10-13 April

A lot of attending writers, and other members of the publishing industry, are on the many panels that are running, and most don't mind if you quietly ask them to sign a book at some point over the weekend.

Very true, Sue.

And by the way, Stephen, not only authors but also editors, agents and publishers will be there. For example, I'm on a panel at 10pm on Friday (how cruel is that???) with the likes of Pete Crowther of PS Publishing and Jo Fletcher from Gollancz.

I'm also supposed to be on two panels on Saturday, at 5.00pm and 7.00pm, bracketing the BSFA Awards -- which themselves promise to be a bit more of an event this year; a few things being planned on that front. Hoping to duck the 5.00pm panel, but we'll see.

Promises to be quite a weekend! :)

That clashes with one I'm moderating - with Jaine Fenn, Chris Hill, John Jarrold, Rog Peyton and Kev McVeigh.

Wow, sounds as if you're going to have a very busy day!!!

Good luck with it all, hopefully I will be able to attend.

I was tempted to come along, seeing as I'm now unemployed and (aside from writing) at kind of a loose end; but I get the impression that the whole thing would be far more beneficial to someone further down the road towards published work than I currently am. Also Nik's comment on doing a 10 'til 5 strike an uncomfortable chord as I'd be travelling in daily to attend.

I can just imagine my efforts at networking:

"so, have you got anything published?"
"No, well, a paper on DNA chemistry but that doesn't exactly count."
"Oh, well anything finished ready for publication?"
"No, but it's getting there."
"Oh." *finishes drink in one long swallow*"Good Lord, I seem to have finished my drink. I'll guess we'll see you next time then? Byeeeee."
"Yeah. Bye."

Still, I tend to come across a lot better to people IRL than I do in text (it's probably the accent), so it's tempting to take the plunge just on the basis of being able to turn up and enthuse at people until they agree to take my email address.

with Altfiction on hiatus this year I'm tempted to make it up for at least a day - work schedule permitting.

I'll be there with Mike - we are really looking forward to it. I've got my bag packed already! I'm on a panel about gothic romance at 3.30 on Saturday and one about urban fantasy at 3.30 on Sunday. And I've got copies of A Blackbird in Amber Twilight (the second Blackbird omnibus) which has got the most yummy cover.

Looking forward to seeing y'all...

Well, I've not packed yet, but I've had a think about what to say on the panels. It's my second convention and I'm quite excited!

Packed? That's Friday morning, half an hour before I dash out the door. ;)

This is my first, looking forward to it already.

So, how does it go?

Do you just turn up, entry guaranteed?

Will I need to wear my costume or can I go incognito?

I'll definitely be there, launching a few new titles including, ahem, one of my own, as detailed here: http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/49934-bucks-fizz-book-launch-three-new-titles.html

As for the packing, most of that'll have to be done Thursday night and finished off Friday morning, since I'm leaving the house before 7.00am (yawn).

Toby, it'll be good to see you again -- be prepared for a far less laid back experience than NewCon 4, and ktabic, it would be good to meet you -- I'll be in the dealers room much of the time, or feel free to come to Saturday's book launch! :)

There is normally provision for 'walk ins', TEIN, though I've always bought membership for every con I've been to in advance. If you're intending to attend the full four days it's certainly worth sorting out a hotel in advance -- the con hotel itself has been full for ages.

Details, including the weekend's programme, are available on the website: Eastercon LX 2009

Thanks for that Ian. - Though it seems a bit hard making one of the crew pay.

It's commutable so no need for the hotel.

Went to Uni in Bradford. - Old memories, curries, booze late nights.

You know - watching others enjoy themselves kind of thing.

may tag along -

Have to see if Mrs Tein is interested.

Does 10am happen on Sundays? I've never been sufficiently awake to notice it before.

Yes, but all presentations and panels that coincide with it are usually subtitled "Please Speak Softly There's A Frenchman Living In My Head". I've had to present hungover before - it's not pleasant when you advance a slide, suddenly forget where you are and then stand there making a gawping, surprised-goldfish face at a room full of people.

Depending on how the weekend looks I might drive across to Bradford for one of the days, if only to saunter round trying to put forum handles to faces...that and it will go some way towards balancing out the fact that my other half will be dragging me to Woolfest in the summer.

You lucky B******!!!!!

What I wouldn't give to go to Woolfest.

All those soft intertwined deeply threaded woollen yarns.

I always love a good tale.:)

I hope that everyone who goes to Eastercon has a great time. I can't go, unfortunately, due to family commitments, but I look forward to hearing what happens :D - should anyone be able to remember afterwards...

Yes good point.

If anyone can post about what they did over Eatercon that would be interesting for other members I think.

Happy Easter all!
