??

i know we speculate about all these theories and what not, but what do you really want to happen by the end?

the most outlandish awesome dooley pleasing idea would be victarion greyjoy, bronn, strong belwas, the hound, a bran/hodor hybrid monster, shagga, timmet, darkstar, and the greatjon getting together and forming some crazy alliance of the meanest dudes ever lead by tyrion and the dragons.

yeah, we're getting that unrealistic.

End? There must be no end! Only the deaths of our favourite main characters and their replacement with equally witty and profound newcomers! ;)

I swear to God there will be hell to pay if it ends with:

"Ned awoke, sweating, and was relieved to find it was all just a bad dream."

I hear Tad Williams's Memory Sorrow and Thorn has an ending along these lines and GRRM has said he was an influence... ;)

I hope I hear wrong though, because I just started Stone of Farewell and am already doubting whether or not I want to keep slogging forward :)

not this :)

my bittersweet predictions:

Cat manages to be responsible for Melisandre's demise/death. unfortunately, Melissandre rigs it so dear Cat bites the big one too.

Bran finds out the truth about who Jon's parents are, but he dies before he can pass the secret on.

The blonde wondertwins secret is publicly exposed, Cercei freaks out, but Jamie just wants to live out his remaining years in peace somewhere and be done with all the drama.

Jon Snow & Daenerys hook up. Arya and Gendry hook up. much cute romance is had, and new dynasty is begun.

I think that it is pointless hoping for some or other "ending", as if this word could possibly be adequate (unless the ASoIaF world is destroyed or Westeros sinks below the waves) for the culmination of such a complex story.

Apart from that, hoping for a given set of outcomes would mean that one is almost bound to be disappointed, which would be sad given the pleasure the books have given us so far**.

** - I am assuming (with good grounds) that the quality of writing and storytelling is maintained until the last chapter of the final book.

sansa on the Iron Throne with take your pick of lords as her consort. having become a true player of the game... and an utterly ruthless one at that. With Sandor sacrificing himself for her to attain her throne - through her manipulating, but at heart actually liking him. Ooh and she hs Cercei publicly hung, or executed some other humiliating way.

Everybody dies, the castles crumble, and the forest covers the lands. The swords and armour on unnumbered battle fields rust away to nothing, and the wall slowly melts. Beavers work, otters frolic, wild horses run about.

Jaime is the last living human, living as a hermit on a mountaintop somewhere, cursing the ******* that his father was, at least in spirit.

At least that way their planet will have a chance.

This is fun.

I like baddass Sansa. Or the end of days story.

I would like Melisandre, the Uncat, most Freys, Ramsay, Roose, Littlefinger, Stannis, Gregor Clegane, the Goldcloaks, to buy a farm and live together with their just deserts, and Cersei to live a long redeemed life as a nun with a chain of hands around her neck. All the destabilizing characters gone.

Birds would twitter, and lambs would gambol, if Brienne and Jaime or Sandor ended up together, Sansa fell in love with Tyrion and they rule the new Dragon Throne with Dany, Arya and Gendry end up with (I don't know if my suggestion was deleted in The Great Chronicles Purge) an Assassin Supply Shoppe, and Willis became King of Narnia (oops) or the South. Possibly Jon and Shireen end up on the Black Iron Throne of the North. Sam becomes Prime Minister Tarly with a nice girlfriend. Asha becomes the Admiral of the Fleet. Three dragons are the progenitors of a new air force, Westeros changes its name to Pern, and there is a Gather. Normal seasons prevail, and the Others lose their undead thingy.

How likely is that? :)

The blonde wondertwins secret is publicly exposed

thats hilarious. i died from laughter. luckily i came back from the dead to post.
blonde wondertwins. brilliant.

In my opinion, the most obvious inspiration for ASOIAF is The War of the Roses. That basically ended with Henry Tudor (claiming the throne through the Beaufort family, allies of the Lancasters) defeated Richard III and then married Elizabeth of York (Edward IV's daughter and Richard III's neice) thus uniting the Plantagenet family (Lancaster and York) claimants.

I know that's a simplistic explanation, but how much of that, if any, will GRRM incorporate into ASOIAF? The prophecy/ideal of the three-headed dragon seems to require Dany to take more than one spouse.

House Targaryen seems to be the family destined to rule again, but will Dany take spouses from Houses Stark (York) and Lannister (Lancaster) to heal their feud?

Or could Edric Storm play Henry Tudor to Shireen Baratheon's Elizabeth of York?

I would hope that a minor character only doesn't take center stage late and claim the throne. That would make me angry.

I know that in the grand scheme of thing Storm isn't minor, but as far as face time, he is.

I suppose there is something to be said for at least one happily resolved romance at the end. I don't know if that is in the cards. I would like to see Arya, Sandor, Jaime, Brienne, Sam, Asha, Shireen, Lady Olenna and Tyrion happy, but things are not looking so good.

Jon, and Dany, maybe Sansa depending on how things go, seem destined for greatness, so I'm hoping for at least one of them to win a throne, with Bran as a special mage and Sam as a Maester.

I think the death of any of the above characters would provide sufficient tragedy to counterbalance a couple of romances. I'm sort of neutral about the Dorne and Highgarden characters so far. I like Littlefinger, and Varys, but in a negative way. It would be satisfying for Euron, the Boltons, the Freys, Stannis, Cersei, Melisandre, Gregor, Stoneheart to have their rewards. And Theon, well that guy is done, but he seems sort of Gollum like.

Dragons are cool, since they may run amok, they balance themselves. And Rickon??? The Reeds? Tommen and Myrcella??

A redemption or two would be satisfying. Like Jorah Mormont.

Having BFS give us a show would be fun.

A Jaime v. BFS showdown would've been great if Vargo Hoat had not gotten involved. Still, Martin did laid the foundation for a great fighter switching hands (and being just as lethal) with Qhorin. Jaime's problem is that he has to become not just great, but become the best swordsman in the realm... again.

Syphon, My apologies. A few years ago, Wiggum (a poster) put together a poll on who we thought was the best fighter. His format was a single elimination tournament. In the quarterfinals after besting Gregor Clegane, Barristan Selmy was matched against Sandor Clegane. Aegon the Unworthy (a poster) vociferously defended Barristan. He called him Barristan Freaking Selmy four times in two sentences... thus was born the moniker BFS... Barristan Freaking Selmy.
