Well, I've read all but Mlle. de Maupin in the volume of Gautier. I quite like his work, but it does vary considerably. "Spirit Love" (originally titled Spirite), is a very odd little tale, not for those looking for the more eerie type of spectral story (though when he does choose to hint at the unreal world there, he manages to convey the atmosphere very well indeed), but for those who enjoy a more unusual kind of fantasy tale, a spiritual romance as it were, with a great deal of pathos and charm... definitely worth tracking down, as there are some very powerful (if often subtle) moments there....
"Fortunio" -- which hovers on the edges of the fantastic without ever quite becoming fantasy -- is a good deal more ironic in tone, even broadly satirical to farcical at times... yet with a biting undertone to it which keeps it from ever becoming ever quite as light as the surface would appear... and the final pages take a very different, even stark, turn to boot....
