I am currently into military sf / space opera. So going with my current mood, I would say:

The Forever War
Altered Carbon
Void Trilogy

The Lord of the Rings (1954) J. R. R. Tolkien
The Deed of Paksenarrion (1988) Elizabeth Moon
Waylander Books (1986) David Gemmell

The third one was a challange really any choice was a compromise. Limiting the chpice to 3 was also a problem...so many books left off the list. Still, I went with sheer enjoyment factor.

Foundation (1951), Isaac Asimov
Speaker for the Dead (1986), Orson Scott Card
The Moirae Effect (2009), Craig Fox

Lord of the Rings
Honor Harrington series by David Weber, On Basilisk Station (1992) is the first book
Codex Alera by Jim Butcher (Furies of Calderon, 1984, is the first book

The Eyes of the Overworld (1966) - Jack Vance
Now Wait For Last Year (1966) - Philip K Dick
Wolf in Shadow (1987) - David Gemmell

There are more SFF books i rate as high but you couldnt choose more than three.

It's so hard to limit. :( I'll go with three that have affected me personally and that I have read multiple times each.

Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkein
The Mists of Avalon (1982) - Marion Zimmer Bradley
Chronicles of Narnia (1950's) - C.S. Lewis

The Lord of the Rings (1954), JRR Tolkien
A Song of Ice and Fire (1996), George RR Martin
A Tale of Malazan Book of the Fallen (1999), Steven Erikson

The Lord of the Rings (1954), JRR Tolkien
A Song of Ice and Fire (1996), George RR Martin
The Dark Tower Series (1982), Stephen King

Mine would be:

Dune - Frank Herbert
A Song of Ice and Fire - George R.R Martin
Good Omens - Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman

A Song of Ice and Fire - GRRM
Farseer Trilogy - Robin Hobb
The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger

The Stars My Destination - Alfred Bester
Dr. Bloodmoney - Philip K. Dick
A Canticle for Leibowitz - Walter M. Miller

The Lord of the Rings - always at the top of any "top" list for me.

The Discworld series, by Terry Pratchett.

The Vorkosigan series, by Lois McMaster Bujold.

Silmarillion- JRR Tolkien
Song of Ice and Fire- George RR Martin
Ender's Game- Orsan Scott Card

Interesting in this poll GRRM is more popular than Tolkien.
