Pray tell us, how you came up with that brilliant observation?

You think my observation is brilliant? Hardly, but if you are in agreement rather than expressing sarcasm, why not open a new thread with a poll; 'Is Tolkien over-rated?' I'll be sure to post my opinions in full.
But in short, I would hope that any book so highly praised would not have the effect of putting me to sleep! No matter what time of day I read it. Don't misunderstand my comment, I rated the Hobbit amongst my top 3 and I like his work. I just think that nearly everything written since LoTR is better than LoTR.

To be sure, it is overrated, but only because its the first of its kind. Its kinda like saying the model T Ford is the best car ever made. No, to be sure it is not, but it deserves respect and admiration for the simple fact that it pioneered the field.

So sorry guys, forgive me for being a little dim. Is this thread about our favouite books of all time, or our favourite series of all time?

You can post either or. If its a series, please include the date of the first book as the series date. Later on I will split the lists and get one for series and one for just sf and another for f.

You have Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination on there twice. Tiger, Tiger and The Stars My Destination are the same book.

Nice choices Gully.

Again in short, agreed. BTW I think you missed my number 3 off your 2nd list.

I'll make sure to check your third book. Sometimes I just loose track.

Yea if you guys/girls see any duplicates or anything along those lines please let me know.

I'll add all the new stuff tomorrow afternoon and post it tomorrow night.

Lord of The Rings (1954) J R R Tolkien
Dune (1965) Frank Herbert
The Man in the High Castle (1962) Philip K Dick

Got to disagree....but there is one way you could have come to the idea that Tolkien is over rated...but if I pointed out that it could be "lack of taste" you might get insulted, so I won't :).....

To me many "series" are 1 book. For example The Lord of the Rings was written a one book but the publisher (no doubt panicing at the idea of a single volume that long) broke it up and released it seperatly.

Tough to get it down to 3.

Tiger, Tiger - Alfred Bester (aka TSMD)
Gateway - Frederik Pohl
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - PKD

Tiger,Tiger was the fourth book that barely didnt make my list. It and Moon is a Harsh Mistress are my favorite SF books.

I wanted to balance fantasy in and PKD is a must for me.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep ? will hardly be even your top 3 when you have have read 5-10 PKD i will bet ;)
