Casting news from the TV series

But that's my point - I never once said, 'She speaks like this in real life, ergo she will speak like this in the series.' I merely expressed my hope that that is not the case, and then reiterated that hope and underlined the my expectation is positive, not negative.

This thread is bringing out the obstinate in you, Ursa...

I don't wish to be obstinate. Perhaps I've misinterpreted the tone of your Post#557, which I read as confirming your criticism of something we almost certainly won't hear, directed at someone that none of us knows anything about, other than she's won a part in Game of Thrones. (Even Australia must be teeming with young people wielding the adjective, wicked.)

I work from the premise that I don't care what actors think and how they speak (or anything else about them**), as long as they act the part in a professional manner, i.e. to meet the expectations of the director (who I hope will meet mine; and yours, if possible).

** - Unless they're out and out appalling people: I wouldn't want to send any money of mine in the direction of, for instance, chez Polanski or the bank accounts of one of those "celebrity" gangsters.

For me, Catelyn and Jaime are much different that I imagined. We shall see if they pull it off.

I think there are some issues about having blonde leading men, especially curly, non rugged, with a swagger. But I agree with Mesanna, that I was expecting more golden and more posh. They probably don't want him to read as too youthful or feminine, or smarmy on screen, though we all know Jaime is tough. I thought he still looked good, though.

They may have wanted to differentiate Catelyn by age, from the other actresses.

I imagine that Arya develops into her potty mouth with future experiences, and the actress will be older.

I'm sure their auditions included talking scenes! I wonder what Ayra's was?!:)

IIRC, Arya's audition scene was her discussion with Jon Snow before he goes to the Wall (when he gives her Needle). Could be wrong about that though.

And yeah, I was bemused about the Dany argument. There's a brief scene where she talks to Jorah Mormont and commands the Dothraki column to halt, to test her authority, and you can hear her voice there (I think it was in the HBO TV rip, linked above, not the offical version on the main HBO site). The actors, obviously can talk however they want. Emilia Clarke comes over as fairly refined ('wicked' is a pretty standard phrase used by most British youngsters of all backgrounds, though not as common these days as it was back in the 1980s).

Thanks, Werthead!

I would probably enjoy a full length film on the making of this mini series, as much as the mini series itself! The audition tapes would be cool. Some discussion of how it was cast would be interesting. Mistakes they made and corrected. How they did the art direction and design! I know there is some of that out there.

In Loras, the series does have that type of looks and the producers likely wanted to ensure they made Jaime more believable as a leader of men, especially in battle. While Loras dominates tournaments and is surely a very skilled swordsman, I never had the feeling that he inspired men like Jaime (although Jaime's inspiration is limited to Lannisters and their bannermen while others mock him behind his back as the Kingslayer).

Meh, everyone in the world of Westeros has different accents, so I don't see that being a problem.

I agree about Dany, but mostly because she wasn't as beautiful as I thought she should be. I was expecting someone with a rather otherworldly look. I know Liv Tylers and Cate Blanchetts don't fall out of the sky, but really. She looks like a regular soap actress. I know that's a horrible criticism to make, especially since we haven't even seen her act yet, but Dany's particular appearance and heritage is such a huge part of her character.

Ack, I also saw Sansa. She looks a lot older and more, um, experienced than I thought they would get for Sansa. Oh well.
I don't get how this:

is in any way not beautiful. Granted she is done up here, but she's quite beautiful, in fact she looks a helluva lot like a younger Evangeline Lilly, whom I think is one of the most attractive actresses out there.. To each their own I guess, I find Emilia prettier than most of the fan art pictures of what she should look like, and certainly prettier than Liv Tyler or Cate Blanchett.

While Emilia doesn't exactly fit my image of Dany either, she doesn't lose out for beauty, in fact the previous actress Tamzin Merchant is probably closer to what a lot of the fan art pictures resemble, but she's nowhere near as pretty.

Also Sophie Turner who plays Sansa is like 13/14, so I don't get how that is much older? Or experienced either, given she's never been in anything before other than a few local plays in England apparently. Given all the children are aged up around 2 years, she pretty much fits that perfectly. Though certainly she looks to be very tall in that scene she stands next to Robb, but most females develop height wise quite early, and in descriptions I've read of Sansa, she does grow to be fairly tall.

I followed that link all the way through to the Game of Thrones entry, which identifies the stars as Harry Lloyd, Mark Addy and Alfie Allen.

Sean Bean is fourth in the list of characters, followed by Ciaran Bermingham (Mort), Emilia Clarke, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage. The order can't be based on screen time, character name or actor's name, so I wonder how the list came to be in that order.

If you take out Harry Lloyd at the top, they are in alphabetical order. But that's just Viserys for you, insisting he be given the reverence due to him! :D

The fact it also has a rating already despite not being out yet is also kind of stupid. Obviously fans will vote if they are allowed, but ranking it high without having even seen an episode is getting a bit ahead of yourself.

Oh, she is lovely, don't get me wrong. I probably should have said she isn't beautiful like I thought she would be.

You said she looked like some soap actress, which sounds somewhat derogatory to me. Most soap actresses have a fake look, while Emilia is far from it.

I agree she probably doesn't exactly fit the image of Dany, but her level of attractiveness has nothing to do with it.
