George Lucas's "Tinkering" with the films

Spielberg on the upcoming Jaws blu-ray and - gasp - his views on digital enhancement of movies:

"George goes his own way and I respect him for it, but my new philosophy on this is to let sleeping dogs lie."

I think that it's fair to say that we've all got two or more releases of the Original Star Wars Trilogy. Since the cinimatic rerelease of the Trilogy Special Edition versions, George has insisted on Tinkering with the fims on each subsequent release. Personally, i don't feel that they add too much to the films (I'd even go as far to say that some of these amendment detract from the film in some scenes.)

I just wondered what others thought? Do you like the additions?

I agree. The tinkering is bad. I enjoy the original cuts of the films as is. The additions done with the re-release of the original Trilogy (adding scenes, using 3D animation, etc.) were alright, but didn't add anything to the films.

This newest release, with certain sound clips added (as in "The Return of the Jedi" with Vader yelling "Nooo!" as he lifts and tosses the Emperor) is even worse. It adds nothing and ultimately comes off as comical.

I prefer to just stay with the original cuts.

He won't achieve perfection with this series and, let's be honest, Star Wars hardly needs to be "perfectionated". It's an adventure series. It has explosions. I got that first time around. If he wants to do something useful, he should make something new that will be just as influential to this generation of movie-makers and cinema-goers.

Having said that, am I the only person who's thought it would be great to see Humphrey Bogart and Sidney Greenstreet in the Millennium Falcon?

I almost want to buy a blue ray player to be able to play these. What a well done review!

The first 'proper' review I've read of the blu-ray set:

I'm now swaying back towards buying it

Don't let him sway you into enabling Lucas's ego. His review loses a lot of potency when you realize it's based on one premise:

"Sure, there were moments when I winced the wince of a man getting a cavity filled without anesthetic, and yes, I still think the prequels—for the most part—are a monumental disappointment, but given the choice between a Star Wars that isn't exactly to my liking and no Star Wars at all"

Which is not true. Because the originals do exist on dvd and can be watched there. Until someone makes a convincing case that the better picture quality alone outweighs the blasphemies of George's self-indulegence, then the bluray is not superior to the original on dvd.

Agreed. I fought for my DVDs, and I like them just the way they are. No need for me to get tangled with something different. Though, I did get a few laughs in the reading. This, for example...

What's ironic and self-condemning is that, in 1988, Lucas once issued a statement to the assembled U.S. Congress, asserting that, "People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians."
*Rolling on the floor, laughing...

That article had an interesting point of view. I think George watches these movies a lot, and since he has the money, and the rights, he uses Star Wars to stave off boredom.

I don't believe the reasons he gives for implementing changes anymore. I don't think the low technology of the 70's and 80's has much to do with it at all. If that were the case, he would have stopped making changes after the "Special Edition" came out. Instead, he is still adding new voices, and sounds, with each new edition, all of which he was capable of doing decades ago without the need to go back and add them every 5 years.

The most comical, and perhaps disturbing, part of the whole thing, is that the more tinkering that is done with these films, the more they resemble this...

I remember when I saw the first knock off lightsaber in this show. I thought there was no way George would let them get away with it. For a long time it seemed like he would do nothing. But now I think he's may just be striving to get back at them, by copying their brand of movie making?:p Being that the stormtrooper banging his head was such a silly thing to have, it would probably go along with the new versions too well to be edited out.

frighteningly so. If things continue the way they have this last decade, I think something like this could become a reality. I mean, Darth Vader yelling "NOOOooo" could fit right in with Power Rangers.

I loved the "apologise for Indy 4" and the "Mom look! BBQ."

Maybe this is the answer - 100 million different special editions - a different one for everyone.
