The purpose of Theon's POV

WS- I got the impression from the Asha spoiler chapter that she's the one who would like to see Theon raised to the seastone chair. With her dead, I don't see any way for him to get there... My money is still, against all odds, on a redemptive death and Asha on the seastone chair, maybe with a loose alliance with whoever ends up ruling the north (she certainly made the most compelling case at the Queen's Moot in AFfC).

Well I haven't seen that chapter so can't comment. It is a bit surprising though as Asha didn't appear to have much time for her "greenlands" brother when he returned to the Iron Isles. Also I can't see anyone in the North allying with the Ironborn who swooped on their homes and families putting them to the sword while they were in the Riverlands. Especially not with Theon & Asha who 'masterminded' the assaults. Yes she came up with the idea of suing for peace with the North at the Kingsmoot but only in exchange for land and hostages - not something Bolton and the other surviving northmen are apt to look on with relish. Besides, I think most of the North would sooner trust a Frey than an Ironborn - well maybe not, but it'd be close!

And as for redemptive deaths...which series have you been reading?? All the deaths I've seen have been brutal and vindictive. Jaime & Sansa are the only ones who even seem to have any remorse for their actions and I can see them dying without redemption, if they die at all.
I can actually see Jaime being killed by Tyrion upon his return either accidentally or on purpose and Sansa perhaps by Arya. Which links in nicely to that other foreshadowing thread Boaz did... :)

We forget that the Boltons have a very old dispute with the Starks over who should rule the North. Old disputes have a tendency to really die and the Boltons are clearly looking to regain control of the North, whether that be with the assistance of King's Landing or the Iron Islands.

We are getting clues as to their intentions in the Reek preview chapter and perhaps the Davos chapters will give more insight. He is another player here that could help Theon and the Ironborn's position in making an alliance with Stannis.

Who will stop them: Jon? Sansa? Bran?

WS- you're totally right, redemption has not been much in evidence thus far in the series. Boaz and I were going back and forth about this last week and I fear I may just be looking at this all through rose tinted glasses. But Theon has just been ground down so much, I feel like it's got to be so he can come out the other end. He still has a vestigal consience, or at least he did in ACoK, towards the end he has all those thoughts about about how he didn't feel good about how things were going at Winterfell, how much more fun it all had been in the Whispering Wood. Of course, he lacks the self awareness to see why that might be, but it wouldn't shock me to see him make some grand gesture for the Starks, who, really, have treated him much better the Greyjoys ever did.

ADwD Spoilers:

In the Asha spoiler chapter she's thinking about rescuing Theon because custom decrees that only someone who was unable to attend the Kings Moot do to circumstances outside their control can challenge a king who's been rasied that way. that's her interest in finding and rescuing Theon.

Thread revival time!

Actually this isn't the thread I was looking for, but I can't find it and persistent fireworks in the area have left me with too much of a headache to sift through any more threads.

So, I know this has been discussed before, but someone recently asked me about the situation involving Theon and the Bolton ******* Reek. I remember certain insights and theories being posted, but as I say, no luck finding them.

Could someone please refresh my memory on this?

Ah. Cheers TK :)

I can't recall if we're supposed to know what happened to the real Reek, but that's what I was struggling to dredge up from memory.

We never met the real Reek. He died off-page, killed by Rodrik Cassel's men when they captured Ramsay Bolton, who'd swapped clothes with Reek and was posing as him.

That explains my compounded confusion Wert.

Much obliged to you and TK.

ASOS Spoilers.

No One, I believe that Ramsay tells this to Theon after the Boltons defeated Ser Rodrik, but before Ramsay kills the Greyjoys and sacks Winterfell.

No, no, no... there are plenty of parts that I have misremembered or forgotten. I mean, how many times have my trivia questions been judged wrong? (The questions, not the answers!)... The story is too huge to keep it all straight. And this is one reason why this forum is so special... the series is still ongoing... we can assist each other in keeping it all straight. Woe to those poor souls who finally start ASOIAF after it's completed and the online discussion has moved on to other series... they'll be all alone with their theories and questions.
