Filming updates from the HBO TV series

from Not A Blog

make what you like of the bolded part

Looks like I will be coming out to LA in early January, to talk about the HBO show at the TCA.

That one is for television critics only, I'm afraid... but I'm looking to set up a couple of public events while I am in town. Watch this space. We will probably do a signing, most likely somewhere in the San Fernando Valley. And our friend Lodengarl, founder and prince of the Brotherhood Without Banners, is going to come down from the Bay Area to organize a BWB event the same day. Details when we have 'em... but angelenos, mark down January 9 on your calendars.

(Might have an exciting announcement that day as well. Maybe two. But don't quote me on that).

Announcing a new WildCards book, and a graphic novel adaptation of The Skin Trade?

With a little less pessimism this time - I suspect the more definite of those announcements will be an air date for the premiere of GoT...

A solid air date for GOT makes sense. GRRM mentioned finishing another chapter, and revising another one. Assuming nothing else finished since the last report, he's down to 4 chapters, with one sounding as if it might be close.

Given he never finishes when he expects to finish - even if he thinks the more tentative announcement will be the completion of Dance, I don't like our chances...

15 minutes of footage, including several complete scenes, where shown at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press junket in LA last night. Two reactions, plus a chat with GRRM who was present.

Among the scenes shown: the "Things I do for love," moment, lots of Robert and Eddard, lots of Dany and Viserys (including the scene where Viserys first really loses it and Dany stands up to him) and a sprinkling of other scenes, some new such as Tyrion enjoying a breakfast with his family members at Winterfell.

The overall reaction seems to have been overwhelmingly favourable. HBO will be releasing a number of new screenshots to coincide with the event at some point over the weekend (possibly tonight).

'New' as in not present in the book? Would this be a different or an additional breakfast scene to the one in the the book, then? I recall a breakfast he shares with Cersei and the children, I'm fairly sure...

GAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!

Must get HBO now.... The only reason I ever watch TV is for sports... and by that I mean specifically basketball and football. I only ever caught LOST, Heroes, Veronica Mars, Rome, The Sopranos, and Spartacus: Blood and Sand on dvd or the web.

I can't believe I'm this excited when I know I probably will nitpick each episode endlessly. Maybe it's rationalizations and double standards that make my world go round.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

P.S. Wert, I have an ASOIAF mancrush on you. Not in the Renly way, but more of how Jaime wanted to grow up to be Brynden Tully or BFS.

Dexter is a must see.

Are you a Nuggets fan?

Dexter is a must see.
I've not seen it, bur from my understanding of Dexter... it would explain your views on Tywin's death at Tyrion's hands currently being discussed on the Jaime thread.

Are you a Nuggets fan?
No!!!! I'm a fan of basketball. I detest the thuggets and everything they do as an organization... especially their players... except for Chauncey and the Birdman. Birdman used to look normal on the outside, yet was totally whacked in the head. After his return, he looks whacked but is now mentally stable... Weird.

The Nuggets have a number of problems. First, they are in a football town. The Rox, Avs, and Nugs could all win titles, yet everyone will want to know about Tebow's latest tweet... or lack thereof. To get around this they (right along with the entire NBA) try to market themselves as hip hop, flashy, trendy... well, trends change and people just move on. None of the idiots attending Nugs games in the Pepsi Center have a clue about the strategy of basketball, teamwork, plays, passing angles, defensive footwork, or any of the fundamentals. That's strange because Utah has butchered Denver with the basics for twenty-five years. The thuggets give their fans what they want... Dunks, Three Pointers, and Strippers, err, I mean cheerleaders.

Second, the brain trust of the Nugs cannot stay with a strategy long enough to build a contender. The revolving door of sycophants and yes men leads to different draft strategies year to year and more focus on marketing than player acquisition and retention.

Third, basketball has been twisted by David Stern and the NBA... and ESPN. In the name of money, err, player development, youth basketball warps the attitudes and expectations of any kid with talent. Case in point, LeBron James aka King James, the Messiah, the second coming of Magic, the hometown hero is now the villain of the league. Even in our current avaricious American culture, we recognize LBJ as the Mad King Aerys of the NBA.

Sorry. I have issues... with Daddy.

As a fan of NBA basketball for the past 50 or so years i take my hat off and bow to you for this post. What you said about the Nuggets can probably be said for most NBA fanbases.

As for Dexter. In the hope that you may one day watch the series (which is available on Netflix btw, and the first 2 seasons can be streamed) I won't tell you why your assesment is off base. Just knowing that he's essentially a psychopath who works as a forensics expert for the police, and that he kills only people who "deserve" to be killed only scratches the surface of who he is and what makes him tick. Anyway, it's a great show, I highly recommend it.

PS- I won't change what I typed above, but in thinking about it more you may not be as far off base as i first thought. Watch the show anyway. The first DVD will get you hooked.

Has anyone else seen this video clip with the HBO producers? They mention that Ned Stark has a "terrible secret" which some folks are taking as confirmation of R+L=J. It must be great to be those HBO guys and be "in the know". I'm so jealous :D

Video is here.

Not sure exactly what the secret is, still, but it was very intelligent of him to drop that bit of information in the interview. For some reason it makes me want to watch even more. The only thing is, the gravity of that statement will be completely lost on most people, who haven't read the books and know nothing about Ned Stark, and Westeros in general.

Yeah, most people will be oblivious. If you believe in R+L=J (and I do), there are so many subtle pointers toward it throughout the books. If it is true and is to be revealed in a future book, I would think GRRM might have told the producers, so maybe there will be little hints in the TV show that us book fans will pick up on. I wonder if there will be any "Promise me Ned" flashback scenes - maybe with a baby crying in the background LOL!

Is it just me, or should we read into them showing Jon on the Iron Throne? It looks like everyone who they showed on the throne in that clip actully sat on the throne or has/had a claim to it. He hasn't had a whiff of King's Landing as of yet. Hmmmmm...... Interesting...........
