Discovered Authors 2010

His talent is impressive by any standards, I think. :)

I know i see talent when i read not genres.

I meant you dont expect a writer like that when there is so much formulatic crime.

He is one of those authors the critics love but the crime readers think isnt enough crime, that he is too different.

While i read spy novel of his that didnt really have a spy story but it was more of On the Road story with social issues, quality writing.

And I haven't discovered him, yet, because I've never managed to find the books, but I will soon discover... George R. R. Martin.

That's right.

Well I'm sure you will enjoy them, whenever you are able to get your hands on them. I waited and waited for them to show up at the used book shop, and after months of waiting they finally got A Game of Thrones. After reading that one, I just ordered the rest online because I couldn't wait that long to read the next ones.

Just in the middle of Anathem by Neal Stephenson (excellent but hard going at times)
Joe Abercrombie - First Law series waiting on the bookshelf along with the Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson. Never read anything by either of these two before.
Read George R.R. Martin's Fire and Ice series and waiting for the next installment!
Sergei Lukyanenko - the Night Watch series
Anne Rice - Interview with the vampire and the next 3 although they did start to bore me a little.

Very much looking forward to starting the Abercrombie and Sanderson novels as they seem to be very well recommended.

I think once these are out of the way then I'm going to go through the whole Malazan series by Steven Erikson.

Should be a good year for reading!

Lara Morgan - I only just spotted her name in the bookshop yesterday. I’m afraid I didn’t have time to read the reviews, so had to Google!

Synopsis:
In a place where winged serpents rule the skies and the gods are no more than memory, the time is coming when all things must change.

Awakening: The Twins of Saranthium Book One

New for me so far, Ursula K Le Guin (I believe she dropped the 'K' a while ago?)
Only read one so far and am partway thru a second, which so far is an improvement on the former!
What ever happened to the original Discovered Authors thread BTW?

Joe R.Lansdale
Paul Di Filippo
Robert Low
Scott Oden
Steve Hamilton

Those authors so far i have read for the first time in novels this year.

I must say I've discovered George R.R. Martin. I've only read short novellas by him so far, but I see myself reading more and more in the future. He's a really great writer.

Only new author I've discovered this year is Stephanie Meyer. Still tending to stick to what and who i know... safer that way lol

I'm reading Michael Cobley's Seeds of Earth at the moment. Not too bad. I'll wait until i've finished it before i comment further though.

Recently discovered Mark Chadbourn, and after The Queen of Sinister, I'm looking forward to finding more of his work.

This year I decided I had to try some new authors so I started with the Malazan series, which I'd been avoiding for years, I don't know why. Anyway I bought GoTM - fantastic - Bought the next 7 which kept me going for 2 weeks, now can't wait for the 10th. I'm saving "Dust of Dreams " so I can read the last 2 together.

I've also discovered:
Mike Shepperd - the Kris Longknife series
Jack Campbell - The Lost Fleet
Maryjanice Davidson - the Undead series ( very funny )
Tom Kratman
Beth Vaughan - I'd recommend " Red Gloves "

A good year so far.

Not quite a discovery since I haven't read it yet but a book at the used bookstore snagged my eyeballs like a barbed fish hook: CONFESSIONS OF AN ENGLISH OPIUM EATER by Thomas De Quincey. It's a nice Penguin book with a few of his other writings going for $7.25. Not weird fiction but certainly weird, at least in title. Anyone know anything about this? Is it worth reading?

Yep...this autobiographical account of one man's addiction is definitely worth reading. It's a classic text of English/World Literature and certainly worth a read. It's also a Penguin edition, which means there will normally be useful notes included, especially nice if you got a Black Classic edition....:)

I like the layout, look of penguin black classic books but isnt there books like those without the notes ?

Very annoying those notes for me, they are trying to explain harpies are/mean,what Soho in London is. Come on like i havent heard of Soho before and dont know simple english words....

Okay, sounds good. I get to escape from my wife for about an hour this morning, maybe I'll sneak over there and pick it up.:D
