Discovered Authors 2010

May I add the following peer
Of poetry great and small?
Tho I read but little rhyme
'Twas enjoyed in all its thrall

Of Coleridge, Samuel Taylor
Do I speak, with his maritime Rime
Of sea and spirit and sailor
Didst he write and I did find the time!

And so I beg to members here
E'en though you may not read
The poets great of times gone by
You give their names some heed

And if you know of poems alike
The one which I descrie
Wouldst that thou inform me here
So that then I might them try!

Soon to add Charles Stross with his 2010 Hugo winning novella Palimpsest, which readers can temporarily download for free from his blog. Also Peter Watts's novellete The Island, an author I'd not even heard of!

No longer - it was only available until the voting was finished and has now been removed :(

Started reading Brandon Sanderson's The Final Empire (Mistborn part 1) last night and havbe to say it's very very good!

Just finished reading Fiona McIntosh's Quickening Trilogy which was good but not adult enough for me. Should have read this in my late teens and I would have enjoyed it far more. However, M<istborn seems right up my street!

Joe Abercrombie - terrific
Brandon Sanderson - very good

And I haven't discovered him, yet, because I've never managed to find the books, but I will soon discover... George R. R. Martin.

That's right.
Looks like my prediction might not come true. I've yet to come around to start A Song of Ice and Fire. And I still have Steven Erikson, Scott Lynch, David Farland and Patrick Rothfuss to go. *sigh*. 2011, maybe?

One author I read this year was China Mièville. Went through The Scar a couple of months ago, and walked away fairly disappointed. I do have Perdido Street Station; let's see when I get around to that one...

I don't know if I can remember all the new authors this year but i will try

Neil Gaiman
Gail Z Martin Very simple, most YA but i found myself getting into them
Peter V Brett really enjoyed both books
Ken Scholes good debut
Robert Scott and Jay Gordon Lesseks key, refreshing portal fantasy
Robert Sawyer

Ilona Andrews - solid supernatural fantasy. Not as addictive as Dresden Files, but one of the best I tried.

John Scalzi - Old Man's War. I'm getting the definite Heinlein vibe off his books. The opening line is cool. Not sure I'm going to continue with the rest of the books though.

Lots of short fiction from:

Dale Bailey
Lavie Tidhar
Kij Johnson
Will McIntosh

Homer
Dante Aligheri
John Milton
Cervantes
Francais Rabelias
Gustave Flaubert
Nikolaj Gogol
Karen Blixen
Stig Dagerman
Tomas Tranström
Clark Ashton Smith

Poems i read several of them of course. Epic verse is fascinating.

Heck! That's an outstanding list of new discoveries. You must have had an excellent year for reading then Conn....:)

Stig Dagerman is the only one who I don't know and therefore have nothing of?

Stig Dagerman is important modernistic writer in Swedish lit. A swedish Camus since he is mostly about philosohpy in his writing. He worshipped Kafka, was influened by The Trial like many others.
