re: Q & A Writing Challenge for Chrons Members -- (Was Proposed Competition)

Definite deadline is good. One entry is good (I was actually thinking if people are brimming with ideas, we could look at making it fortnightly instead of monthly). And I think it should be a story, as well, not a description.

Look forward to the first challenge!

It has begun:

http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/527115-april-writing-challenge-75-words-read-first-post.html

I'll leave this thread open a little longer for discussion. This month is set in stone, but depending on how it goes we can still talk about future changes.

Obviously, it's unlikely that anyone will have something already on hand, and stories will be written (or cut down) especially for the Challenge, so I won't despair if entries don't start appearing very soon.

re: Q & A Writing Challenge for Chrons Members -- (Was Proposed Competition)

Another nice thing about the 75 word limit is there's no excuses for not reading everyones entry before placing your vote.

re: Q & A Writing Challenge for Chrons Members -- (Was Proposed Competition)

That's a very good point, Quokka.

re: Q & A Writing Challenge for Chrons Members -- (Was Proposed Competition)

I should point out that my own suggestions for an increased word limit were not as generous as Leisha's. I've been toying with the idea of writing some flash fiction for a while, just as a mental exercise. I would suggest 500 words as a theoretical maximum upper limit, but I think that 300-350 words is a good length. Seventy-five words surely qualifies as most parsimonious. I suppose it's something different, again. 'Nanofiction', indeed. Well, it's nice that it's happening at all, and we'll see how it goes. If I can write a six-word story, surely I can write one in 75?

I certainly think it should be for stories, rather than mere vignettes.

I like the theme, Teresa. It should inspire some interesting responses.

re: Q & A Writing Challenge for Chrons Members -- (Was Proposed Competition)

No, no, absolutely not. It will be like the monthly Photo Challenge, where the participants and any other members who want to vote will get to choose the winner each month.

Except for contributing something now and then, my only participation should consist of sticking and unsticking threads.

I wrote mine this evening. I don't know whether to enter it or just post it to show that I wouldn't suggest something I'm unwilling to try myself. Considering I set it up and chose the theme this month, that will depend on whether people think it would be fair for me to enter something this time.

Meanwhile, I'm still thinking about a few of my word choices.

And with words to spare, I see!

re: Q & A Writing Challenge for Chrons Members -- (Was Proposed Competition)

Once you start throwing out words, it's hard to stop. Secretly, I am the author of several multi-volume novels, only I whittled and worried away all the words, so you can't tell!

Teresa:

I would suggest leaving this thread open (and possibly renaming it) so that it gives somewhere for comments and questions. Otherwise, the actual competition thread will be filled with shortish posts that might look like an entry.

Re: Writing Challenge Questions, Answers, Comments -- (Formerly: Proposed Competition

I don't think it would be unfair for you to enter, Teresa. Go for it!

Re: Writing Challenge Questions, Answers, Comments -- (Formerly: Proposed Competition

I agree with Cul, Teresa. Please enter. The more entries we have, the more succesfult he comp will be I think.

Re: Writing Challenge Questions, Answers, Comments -- (Formerly: Proposed Competition

Is more than one entry allowed? I have one but I might be able to do better.

Re: Writing Challenge Questions, Answers, Comments -- (Formerly: Proposed Competition

Much as I am sorry to say this, while it sounds like a lot of fun, I regret to inform you fine people that you'll have to count the storm elemental out of this contest, simply due to the fact that I am unable to actually post a full story of only 75 words or less. :(

EDIT: Disregard this post, I managed to get one in at 59 words.

One for this month, Dave:

We'll also go with one entry each to begin with. If it turns out that a lot of people are overflowing with ideas, we could adjust that to two another time. As with the word count, that will depend on whether it lasts long enough for adjustments to be made.

I hear you, Manarion. I really had to trim. It's such a small amount of words, you've got to be merciless...

Re: Writing Challenge Questions, Answers, Comments -- (Formerly: Proposed Competition

I share your problem, Dave. I shall leave it a few days and see if more and better inspiration strikes, I think.

Re: Writing Challenge Questions, Answers, Comments -- (Formerly: Proposed Competition

Very well, then, I have posted my contribution. We needed more fantasy, anyway.

It was thrilling this morning to come online and see 13 entries already.

I didn't really have trouble with the word count, although I usually tend toward the prolix (shocking revelation, I know). I kept revising, but every time I counted, it came out somewhere between 68 and 73 words, which surprised me.

Re: Writing Challenge Questions, Answers, Comments -- (Formerly: Proposed Competition

Mine came to 77 words so I only had to chop two out! Was pleased with that. I'm not good at having to cut whole sentences!
