The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

Right now I just hope it does not turn into a CGI fest like Avatar (although, I did like Avatar; CGI need to be invisibly integrated into films when used, IMO).

One could argue that the three PJ LOTR movies were CGI fests, albeit with huge quantities of physical art/craft thrown in. Then again, apart from the wargs, IMO the natural imagery and physical effects held up and kept the balance right.

I'm relieved - didn't rate Pan's Labyrinth at all. But I'm not hopeful. Why two parts? It would be easy to tell the story of the Hobbit in one two hour movie. I'm against splitting novels in this way - don't think HP7 should be too either - if they can cram flabby old book 5 into one film they could certainly do 7.

Exactly! for the time the CGI was as invisible as they could make it.
Avatar on the other hand looks largely like a high quality video game (for some reason CGI movies like to use unreal color pallets).

Don't get me wrong Del Toro undeniably has talent and produced a well crafted movie in Pans Labyrinth, however he followed it up with Helboy 2 where he was apparently so concerned with giving surrealistic images to the audiences that title characters took a back seat to the imagery. Giving me, at least, the impression that he just didn't care to make as good a movie as he should have been capable of making.

Enjoy!

This is sad news (I thought Pan's Labyrinth was wonderful) but at least it appears that the film will still be made (though goodness knows when!).

Speculating on possible directors, how about Alfonso Cuaron? In terms of making 'blockbusters', Children of Men was superb and he revitalised the Harry Potter series. He's also friends with Del Toro apparently, so there might be some continuity there...

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

As much as Del Toro is a great director I think there is really only one man who should have done this movie from the start and thats the man himself Jackson .
Will it happen , who knows but to go with someone else other than Jackson is going to end in tears.

Finally!

Filming on The Hobbit is set to begin in February after it was finally given the go-ahead by film studio bosses.

Warner Bros also announced that Peter Jackson, who directed the Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, would helm the two-part prequel.

BBC News - The Hobbit to begin filming in February next year

But it's not a b***** prequel - it was written before LotR...

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

The Hobbit, the book, is not a prequel to LoTR, the book, as it was written first.

But the Hobbit, the film, can be said to be a prequel to LoTR, the films, as it was filmed afterwards but set before.

Let the confusion commence!

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

So the events in LOTR form a sequel to the Hobbit! ;)

Um, yes... in both senses of the word. ("Sequel" that is.) In fact, as JRRT mentions in his prefatory material, he wanted to get someone interested in the material he had written on the earlier days of Middle-earth (what would eventually become, more or less, The Simarillion), but what they wanted was another book like The Hobbit. In fact, C. S. Lewis, in writing about the members of The Inklings reading parts of their works in progress to each other, referred to LotR as Tolkien's "new Hobbit"....

As to whether this film will be as good as, or better than, or sub-par... who knows? I'm a bit chary, given Jackson's manic approach (which decidedly put me off the theatrical version of "Fellowship" and large sections of the other films), but only time will tell how this one will pan out....

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

Apparently this is going to be the most expensive film ever made, outstripping even the LotR trilogy.

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

Digs, didn't Avatar get that record of the most expensive film ever made? Or am I the one who thinks so? Or are you considering the trilogy to be the most expensive series of movies?

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

No, I think you're right vector. I compared it to LotR because it's a trilogy and far more epic in scope than The Hobbit - yet The Hobbit will be pricier than all three LotR films combined.

re: The Ongoing Saga of the "Hobbit" movie...

Interesting point: as LotR the book is not a trilogy, but a very long book split into three parts for publishing and printing reasons, a case could be made for the films to be regarded the same way - in which case, both the cost and the overall box-office takings of the whole LotR movie (likewise split for length into three) would beat Avatar hollow...:p
