Discussing the Writing Challenges -- November and December 2010

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

I have been so blown away by some of the entries in the Photo Challenge this month, Cul, which one to vote for is another very, very difficult decision to make.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Sometimes we get as many votes as there are stories that month, sometimes we don't. Even when we do, it's impossible to say whether or not some of those votes came from people who didn't submit stories (in which case someone who did ... er, didn't.)

So in any given month, we can't really tell how many of the writers voted.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

I think every month we tend to get at least one or two new members who post a story but then disappear before the voting begins, which is a bit disappointing. That would account for a couple of missed votes each month.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Thank you for the mentions, and even bigger thanks to the one who voted for me! :D

Out of all these stories, three really stuck out for me. They are Stormfeather's, Teresa's and Mouse's.

Stormfeather's poem has stayed with me ever since I first read it, so after careful contemplation, she gets my vote. Good job!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Thank you, Chel, No One, TP and SF for the mentions! :D

I think I've whittled mine down to three: Talysia, HJ and Hoops...

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

I voted. Not saying who for :) there was a good choice though.

Something with nipples on its face is clambering over the next-door's roof with a giant hare in its wormy fingers. Ah well, there goes the neighbourhood...

Anyway, I'd just like to thank those who put me on their not-so-short lists!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Well, after forcing myself to be absolutely ruthless, I got down to two - Boneman and TEIN. I just couldn't choose which one I liked more. It's been bugging me all morning!!

In the end I had to toss a coin - and I'm sorry Boneman, but TEIN won this time.

And it looks like the challenge is still wide open - 6 people with 3 votes each . . .

And there's still time for more votes. If you've not done it, get in there - yours might be the deciding vote . . . . . . .

Listen, I won the inaugural challenge on the toss of a coin, so no problem at all! (I voted for TEIN, anyway) To have got to the last 2 in your estimation is great, thanks so much!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Ok, I went through and read them again. Which made things worse. My three went back up to four as Teresa's stuck out to me again.

But, I've just voted. And I think I've made it a tie...

Hoopy for me. It was just too good.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Well, I've voted now. It took me a while to decide, but that's it anyway. :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Well, apparently I missed the last rush on the voting side. :( But TE won? That's cool. :)

Karn, The voting is NOT over, and TE is not leading at this moment, but could still win.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- September and October

Guess I misunderstood something. *Shrugs* When's it supposed to end, anyway? It looks like Hoopy will be the winner this month, unless someone pulls off a tiebreaker by voting TE. :D And doesn't really matter if I missed the last few days, I was the first to put a vote down, but still, I would've liked to see the progress. :) *Mutters about being days without internet*

I wonder what theme Hoopy would choose....?

Well, I've finally mananged to create a short list, by being as harsh as ever. The short list would have been a lot longer, but for me some of the stories, though excellent in themselves, fell just outside the genre.

In keeping with the theme, my shortlist is a Magnificent Seven:

Boneman -- The Homecoming
digs -- An Excerpt...
Mag the Mighty -- Flesh and Blood
reiver 33 - The Oppenheimer Project
Teresa -- Every Sin But One
The Procrastinator -- Pride: The Original and Best
Ventanamist -- Sermon to the Children

Still tearing my hair out over these at the moment, but meanwhile -- for the second month running -- a Special Award for Wit and Ingenuity, this time to Deathfrommassive for Sloth, in both senses...

If there's no tie-break required - and I'm not going to hold my breath because there's nearly always a tie-break - we can finally find out what some of these stories have been about.

(I do wonder if stories thought outside-genre are so categorised because their meaning has been missed.)
