re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Really excellent entries, impressive! Crystal Haven hit hard with that one. I want to know what happened, did she save little Miriam, or ...
Maybe a sequel once this challenge is over? )

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Posted my bit, but competition already looks stiff this month, and such a shame to have to suffer ruthless editing every month.

But I think I came through well this time. :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Well I think I know who I'm voting for, it's going to take something really special to make me change my mind. Can't see it not winning either.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I think I know which one you mean, mosaix - there's one that's really standing out for me too. Then again, I could be completely wrong.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I already have three favorites, we have less than twenty entries, and some of the people who wrote stories I loved before have yet to post this month.

For me, I think it's going to be a hard choice.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Well, I think I still have one clear favorite, but there have been quite a few really good contenders posted since then, too. And we probably haven't seen the last of that this month!

I like to go back and reread the whole collection every few days, as well as reading all the new ones as they appear, so by the time voting comes along I have gotten to know them all pretty well.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Well this is fun! It's very much like the feeling of doting on a past moment, then coming up with the perfect pun, and so very much wished you had said it back then...

I know precisely who my vote goes to so far!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

It's a rather slow month for me already. I don't quite have a choice laid out yet for voting, myself.

But I think I'll get back on track by August. :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Oh yeah, Karn, I was wondering what happened to you this month! You do realize you're on page TWO this time, right? :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

It's like a party. We can all gather round the campfire holding hands and singing songs. That ought to give voters something to think about, aye? :D

The trouble is, we want more voters, not to drive the potential ones away. I mean, the number oh its on the main writing thread must mean that not just those of us who write are reading the thread, mustn't it? And a majority of members are readers; how can they not have an opinion on these stories? But regularly, each month, there are fewer votes than stories, when it has been made clear that everyone is more than welcome to give an opinion.

No, it isn't easy; I myself have gone technological since discovering that, while sticks of calcium carbonate don't make particularly pleasant sandwiches, solidified milk's none too good for writing on blackboards.

It would be nice to be able to reject say half of the stories as not worth consideration (when I was judge in a song competition we eliminated two thirds as not being worth listening all the way through. Can you think of a single submission you've not read through at least twice?)

Oh, all right then. Do you know 'The Engineer's Wheel'?

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Is that anything like "The Wheels on the Bus"? Or more like "I've Been Working on the Railroad"? Maybe a combination of the two....

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Yes, usually I'm first on the scene, TDZ, but this piece of crap Dell computer had a rather nasty Stop error when loading and it took me three days to find the disk.

Engineer's Wheel, Chris? I'm afraid not, but I do know I've Been Working On The Railroad.....

I think the month that Seph won we had the full 42 votes. But I don't know why we never seem to attract voters from other parts of the forum.

And there have been some AW stalwarts who haven't contributed stories since the first month ... or not at all, which surprises me.

Maybe we should go out and challenge some of them directly. "The color of your coat offends me, sir --" slap, slap, slap "-- I challenge you to 75 words at dawn. Name your friends, and mine shall call on them at their lodgings."

(Granted the person challenged is supposed to name the weapon, but that's a technicality.)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Perhaps they think that submitting a 75-word story is like running the gauntlet....

Now if I could just think of an idea for this month's challenge.

(But when false identities may be involved, there's no need to be Russian into it.)

I fear 'The engineer's wheel' was sung chiefly by, to and with engineers, at a period when this species was almost exclusively masculine (yes, I am that old) and is fairly graphically obscene, when obheard. Mind you, a number of the filk songs I have found the lyrics to are at the very least suggestive, if not blushworthy.

I have no objection to the 'subordinate clauses at fifteen paces, but is the traditional 'at dawn' essential? Dawn comes so early at this time of year that I more often see it going than coming…

I like this idea. And the mental picture I get from it. :D

Words are our weapons, of course. A blunt noun, or a razor-sharp adjective. A pair of prepositions (light and nimble), or a heavy, unwieldy '-ly' adverb. The range and accuracy of an artillery verb.

Which would you choose?

I would really like to see more people from around the site voting. I'm not sure how we make that happen, other than by bugging the life out of posters in other parts of the forum. But the overwhelming majority of folk here must be readers (and fans of the genres, to boot), so it shouldn't be too difficult to convince more of them to vote. Right?

After all, I've noticed a few new members showing an interest in the Photo Challenge since we mentioned it here. (Unfortunately, the Photo Challenge doesn't have as many participants, and most already enter the Writing Challenge, so it doesn't work as well in reverse.)

As for me -- I've written a few versions of the story I want to post, this month, but I'm not satisfied with any of them.

I have a couple of clear favourites from the stories posted so far (both are from people whose stories I have loved in past months), but it would be very difficult to choose between them. And I'm sure there will be more great entries to come.

Hehehee. Heh heh , hahahah! (chortling)

I like DustyZebras killer pens, too.

To quote the League Against Tedium:

You say the pen is mightier than the sword? Very well. Meet me upon the morrow and we shall test your theory with steel!
