Discussing the Writing Challenges -- November and December 2010

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

My final four were Chrispenycate, Teresa, The Judge and Sleepless, and I tore my hair out for a couple of days trying to decide among those. In the end, I had to vote for Teresa, on the sheer talent of making it seem like there are twice as many words as there really are--and a great story as well! (I actually counted, because I just couldn't believe that richness was only 75 words. Sure enough.)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Thank you, TDZ!

With a lot of the stories, I think "How can so much happen in 75 words?" Mine always seem short to me.

We have less than a day-and-a-half to vote*, and we're stuck at 37 since last night.

*And I changed the title of the thread to reflect this.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

It shouldn't be this hard!!

Look, I'm sorry, but I've just got to have three votes next month, at the very least... please? Pretty Please, with a cherry on top?
It gets harder and harder to separate the stories, and my short list contains everyone who entered. After an incredible amount of whittling, this was my short, shortlist:

Talysia - Extreme measures
The End is Nigh - A fly on the wall.
Chrispenycate - Temptation
Teresa - The fountain of fair-seeming
One Big Potato - A reflection
Hoopyfrood - Big Surprise
Mouse - A face Mogul
The Judge - Consequences
Hilarious Joke - The end of the World

It was just so hard to settle on one, and in the end I can't actually remember which one I voted for! It was very late, I was very tired, a glass or two of wine... Cul? Can you tell me who I voted for? All of them deserved my vote, and I think I voted for Hoopyfrood. This is why I need three votes next month, let's all have three votes!!

Honourable mentions to: Ronanida, Learning, HB, Leisha, Digs, Paranoid Marvin, Peter Graham.

And thank you so much to those who have voted for my story! It is great to get a mention, let alone a vote, in such August (July?)company.

Well, I've been out canvassing for votes, and I myself voted.

I can't understand why there are fewer votes than entries, and lots of excellent stories without a single nibble. Sure, it's hard; but writing the thing in the first place is hard, too. (at least it is for me. I would get quite miffed if it turns out that some people just churn them out on seeing the theme.)

I'm going to be late for the next one; but I am going to manage something.

For the glory :D

If you can't even recall where your one vote went, I'm not sure you'd be safe with three of them.

(And I'm still pondering: I'm too tired to vote - choose, that is - tonight, so will do so tomorrow morning.)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

I wave my fist at whoever pinched my possible vote from Harebrain. Grrr! And the same happened over at the Photo challenge too. A person just can't catch a break...

I jest, of course. I'm stupidly pleased with all the mentions (and votes!) this month, especially when the quality of stories seems to be increasing each time.

I have voted ... Least I managed to remember to vote this month ... Erm, what? Did someone say something then? No? Moving on quickly.

A few favourites, including digs' and HJ's, and I know they're not technically counted but for some reason I just haven't been able to get the words "Fountain of Fair-Seeming" out of the head the past day or so. My final vote, however, just couldn't resist...

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Grrrr! I voted a couple of days ago and thought I would see how the voting was going. I went to the site and found that the poll thought I had not voted yet. I am on the same computer and the same IP, but I changed the settings on my wireless router so I guess to say that poll site recognizes the computer must be a bit overstated.

PS> Talk about temptation. I wanted to see how the voting was going and it would have been so easy to talk myself into voting once for Parson, you know, just to see how things were going, it wouldn't have been cheating? Would it?

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

There should be an option to see the results without voting...faaaar down at the bottom of the list of names, there should be something like "view results".

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Thanks Boneman for that mention amongst the kings & queens, lords and ladies, girlz and fezellas of writing. I did finally vote and as it seems pretty trendy to give a list, here we go.

Vote to: TDZ. Pens taking over the world, queue squealing like a girl, that's awesome.
Runner up: Precise Calibre. Quote me the first time I read it "Ohhhhhh, I see what he did there"
Mention-ayes: HB, Digs, Devils Advocate, Paranoid Marvin, No One, Heoru*, Sleepless*

Special thanks to the first timers (sorry if I am missing any): Ronanida, Tindal, Shingetsu, Telford, Thwilli and * from above.

Last thanks to everyone for taking the time to read the stories!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Hoopy snared my vote this month, from a short but distinguished lit of contenders. It certainly is a strong little contest we're running here...

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Ohhh, thanks OBP! I never expected a vote in this bunch of stories! :D

I avow, that (not voting for Parson, for myself) was not a temptation at all. I have two votes, far more than my contribution merits; more, indeed than Mouse. I put it down to targeting my audience and recognising that kittens are a guaranteed draw (now what will I do if 'kittens' is selected as a theme? Evil laugh; oh yes, I know…)
But, having the first four at the head of my string of numbers clustered into so small a space, is not that last, 'the rest of you will leave with nothing' choice artificial? Wouldn't it be quite justifiable to put your taste ahead of democracy? Nobody could ever find out.

Oh, for anyone else with difficulties:–

At least I seem to be winning in the "How Close Can Your Title Get To The Right-hand Margin" competition.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

TJ has, though, the benefit of an S on the end of VOTE.

(There is, I suppose, a decimal point in my percentage of votes cast, but in a proportional font, it isn't very wide.)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Another difficult month, with far too many excellent entries to include as honourable mentions. But to plough on (what else? ;)) and in order of posting within category:

Honourable Mentions:
  • A Fly on the Wall by TheEndIsNigh
  • The Fountain of Fair-Seeming by Teresa
  • Big Surprise by HoopyFrood
  • A Face Mogul by Mouse
  • Paul by telford
  • Condemned by paranoid marvin
Runners Up:
  • Consequences - Terrifying rape of yesteryear fuels a long, long siege by The Judge
  • 1665 by Peter Graham
  • The Mystery of Iniquity by Sephiroth
Winner:
  • Rotten to the Core by Boneman

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Strewth! Thank you Ursa... that is high praise indeed, bearing in mind the excellent company I'm in. I can't think of a higher compliment!

ps:was it the pun in my last posting that swayed you?

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

We are five votes short of the number of entries, and we have four hours to go. Something tells me we are not going to make it.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- July & August

Well Seph and I haven't voted yet - although I'm just about to read through the entries again and decide. :)

Seph is about to, as well, soonish.

And thank you for all the mentions! :):):):)
