re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I agree.

I don't think we should be 'disqualifying' any entries. Whatever someone has entered is what they've entered. But we should at least keep the theme/genre in mind when short-listing our candidates.

The Four Musketeers was on at the weekend. Your response was almost an exact quote.

Dumas

It is on my order, and for the good of the Chrons, that the writer has written what he has written.

Thanks DFM -- and I liked your treatment of a universal theme, and the way you personalised it so simply and effectively with the title.

Some other really good ones so far, and so much variety. I could easily find something good to say about each of them. Great to see some newcomers too.

TEIN's made me chuckle.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Well I've decided to embarass myself by having a go  First time I've tried to write anything other than letters, emails or techie stuff since I was as school

Loved Talysia's and Ventanamist's entries.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

And a very good piece it is, too, Vertigo. So now you've started exercising those creative muscles, what's next on the agenda?!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Yep, that's a goodun Blackrock. You're at the top of the bubble sort so far.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

It is a really good story. But it would be even better if it was, say, seven words shorter?

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Well spotted, HareBrain.

Blackrook, your piece has to be disqualified as being over the 75 word limit. We haven't thought about the consequences of having to do this, as we rather assumed that people would read the opening post and follow instructions.

OK. My initial feeling is you're stuck with your story, in the same way that those who ignore the theme of the challenge aren't allowed to withdraw one entry and submit another just because they failed to read things properly -- the only difference being that when it comes to voting, yours won't be entered on the voting list. But since Teresa started the whole challenge and instituted the original rules, it's best for her to have the last word. And since the challenge belongs to the whole Aspiring Writers community -- and beyond -- if anyone has any thoughts, put them here or PM them to me, Teresa or Cul.

EDIT: I hadn't ever thought it necessary before, but in the light of this I went through and checked all the entries to date, and I'm afraid, The Ace, that I make your entry as 79 words, ie 4 too many. If this figure is confirmed then your entry will also have to be disqualified. Sorry.

I was walking to lunch and the last line popped into my head. Presto, change-o, there was a story in it.

I made sure it was well under the limit, too. ;)

Bonus points if you can complete the title without Googling it!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I guess that's what comes from tweaking - you write the initial story and count the words then tweak it a couple of times but forget to re-count :(.

MGIR - I like your entry - don't know the title reference but I won't cheat and google it, so someone else can show off!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

BU**ER!

Now I have to start over again.

Although I agree with J - sorry Blackrock.

What I couldn't have done with another seven words.

Even so, a worthy effort

Not 100% sure but I think I can get close.

I think it's Nietczhe (sp?) "Man is least himself when he is " and then some synonym for "penitent", though being a translation from the German I'm going to claim that it could be any one of a number of things :p

Edit: damn, just thought it might be "Man is least himself when he apologises" -- same idea though.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

MGIR's is really good. I just came here to say that, then read the posts I've missed here and uh... well I actually can't remember the title of MGIR's story. My bad. I tend not to take a lot of notice of the titles, which is naughty, and probably why I don't understand half the stories!

Also, StormFeather, you give me too much credit! :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Well, I did Google MGIR's title, and for heaven's sake, how wrong can one be? I think my memory is the most inventive part of me. I even got Bilbo Baggins's tea-time wrong the other day.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Methinks the word-limit should be enforced, which is a shame, as the two stories that have gone over, are both really good!

Since I actually counted 'clickety-click' and 'tickety-tock' as two words each, (and there has been discussion about hyphenated words, and I think we erred on the side of latitude) can I have two extra for next month please?;)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Ah now nobody's asked that have they - carry over some words eh! Seems to me I could post a really, really short story one month and then have loads of words for the next, yay!!! :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Well, well, well. I seem to have missed out on voting for July's challenge. I was going to vote for Talysia, anyway. :D

Well, just to let all you kind folks know that my leg or my abuse of painkillers hasn't killed me yet, I put my piece in for this month. :)
