re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

People actually have, this month and in previous months, asked if they could edit their stories or submit others that are closer to the theme. They were told no.
Given this, I can't see how you could have come to any other decision than the one you have.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

It's a shame to see any creative work disqualified , and I can fully understand how the authors may feel upset - probably more at themselves than anyone else. It's hard being a mod , I guess even harder when it comes to decisions like this , but I too think the decision you reached was the only one which was fair to forum users as a whole - however hard that was.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I've finally stopped squeezing words and managed to get my story finished to my nearly satisfaction. It's actually the second of two I wrote, but the first one was a complete rip off of a tale I remember reading in one of my brother's comics *WORD CENSORED* years ago, and no matter how much I told myself it was an homage and no one would ever know, it made me uncomfortable. Pity, because the original story was a cracker even if my version of it is lame.

Anyhow, the one I have posted is all mine, which explains a lot. No hidden message this month -- but a puzzle or two... There is A Big Clue as required under the Ursine Conundrums, Puzzles and Puns in Short Stories Regulations.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Well, at least I know to look for something there, then--I have been wondering about a few other stories that appear to contain clues under the UCPPSSR, but not certain if they are true clues or red herrings left by accidental choice of emphasis.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Mine alludes to something, which may be why some people probably think it doesn't match the criteria (if any people do at all).

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I didn't have any problem with yours fitting the theme and genre, PC. I read it as some kind of interactive magazine (which would make the "real" world of the waiting room SF, and the magazine's story itself was fantasy) and the time element was the way it passes so slowly waiting for a doctor/dentist. But I didn't get any allusion. Is it a RPG or something? Do we get a clue?

I'm also still puzzling over mgir's line/quote. I don't want to google it, but I suspect it's a song lyric and my knowledge of those is very limited.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Cul,

Thank you for the clarification. I am very careful about the 75 word limit and understand the need for a hard limit. I agree with the mod's decision. However, the Christian in me likes to err on the side of grace rather than law. I would have liked to have seen the stories stay up but without the ability to garner votes.

Parson

In the end, it's simply easier this way. For example - for someone who hasn't been following this thread, who comes to read the stories and vote... but can't find the one they liked best.

There's nothing stopping The Ace and Blackrook reposting their stories elsewhere - in Critiques, if they'd like some feedback, in the Blogs, if they don't.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I had a dream the other night that would fit the theme perfectly and would squeeze into 75 words.

Unfortunately, it was set in the Star Trek universe and there's no way I'm gonna write tie-in fiction!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

PC: Is it the title -- and a reference to a naturally occurring granular material composed of fine divided rock and mineral particles used in certain horological instruments? Because if it is, I got that straight away. If it isn't -- I'm stumped. (Was I right about the SFF and doctor/dentist waiting room at least?)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Only slightly.

Also, there's personification in it.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Now I'm beginning to wonder if I got PC's story after all. I thought the reference was obvious, but if it's something abstruse ... it went right over my head.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

The decision wasn't reached because we were wedded to the idea of enforcing the rules ... it's entirely a question of fairness. How many other stories might improve if the writers were given a more generous word count? If we allow those two to slip through, how can we deny anyone else who might plead for a few more words? If we allow them to edit or resubmit, how can we deny other people who might want to do the same? (People actually have, this month and in previous months, asked if they could edit their stories or submit others that are closer to the theme. They were told no. How would they feel if others were allowed to do either or both of those things now.)

And if we were to grant all of those requests, what was the point of the 75 word limit in the first place?

I, personally, feel very badly that there were misunderstandings, even though the rules are clearly stated. I wish this hadn't happened, and that we hadn't had to make a decision.

I totally agree with the ruling - if it had been me that had posted say, 80 words, without realising it, I'd have gone "Doh!", and tried to kick myself. I'd only have myself to blame - as you say it's clearly stated, and every time, I've counted and recounted to ensure it's 75 (even when it's ruined my pentameter!). And the mods do an excellent job here, I know I wouldn't enjoy policing 'wrongdoers'... although a little slap now and then never hurts (must be the public school background).

But it would have been nice to leave them there, with a big red sign, (and naturally they wouldn't have appeared in the voting poll, anyway) pour encourager les autres...

Positives? It won't happen again. Will it?

Remember when Brendan did 4 lifts with Kelly brook?

ps: what's 'abstruse'?

What's recondite?!

Ok, MGIR, is your title anything to do with that Irish fella who likes pomegranates and who I'm reading a lot of at the mo?!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

The temptation to reply that recondite means abstruse is strong, but I will refrain.

They both mean arcane.

I had one of those the other day looked up precess and got back move in precession. How useful is that!

Sorry don't mean to go off thread but couldn't resist mentioning it!
