re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

At least the Chrons will have given Cul some experience of tied results.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Checking a couple of things I discover that Culhwch paid us a quiet visit earlier today. Or ... later. Or sometime tomorrow. I get confused about the time difference with Australia. Anyway, he was here.

But Sephiroth and Leisha are seriously missing. I suppose if something had happened to either of them the other would have dropped by just long enough to let the rest of us know. Still, considering that they each have health problems, it's a little worrisome.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

And they'd just come back from holiday, so it's not likely to be that.

I could E-mail Leisha with the corrections I've been doing on her piece? I'd hoped to get a bit further but if she answers it would at least tell us they still exist…

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Cul also seems conspicuous by his absence over the last few days -- he wasn't standing for election was he?

The way things went I might have had a chance at the top job had I thrown my hat in the ring... But Teresa is right, I've been about, reading more than posting. Did drop in last night (which I believe is probably now for you, Teresa, or later today...) to put the poll together. I do have a story for this month, I'm just hoping inspiration strikes and I get a better one down on paper. The standard in this thing has become ridiculous...

From memory they've tended to drop off for longish periods of time in the past and returned safe and sound - hopefully the same will hold true this time around.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Yes, I remember they've done that in the past. So I'm not counting on either turning up and posting a last minute story.

Good news for the rest of us as competitors, but disappointing as readers.

Well, we stand at 45 now, and if you don't fall into a ditch or something, we should be assured of number 46. Our chances of meeting last month's mark aren't so bad.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Oops, I didn't realise everyone had been worrying about me. Didn't even know you'd notice my absence.   I just loaded up the Chrons - first time in weeks, because I remembered there might be voting to do - and I saw this.

We've both been very busy with our work - Seph's been doing his short stories, and I've been diligently working on my novel (which I've almost finished!). And I've been trying to build a profile on Facebook, with lots of author friends so I can network. And I've spent several days putting together a huge wardrobe and cabinet for my room, which tired me out. And I've had my sister sleeping over for a week and a half since I got back from Scotland, and she gets upset if I go online, or write, and ignore her.

I'm soooooooooo sorry for worrying you guys.

I'm not sure if I'll enter the challenge this month, though, because I'm finally getting somewhere with my novel, and I want to have it finished (and be in the proof-reading stage) before the con in September.

I'm on page 447/517! Only another two chapters to write for it, and the last bit of editing, and its done and ready to check for pacing issues! I'm doing so much on it lately, waaaay too much for what my CFS doc recommended I do (which is 10-20 mins a day max ).

I should learn to keep up posting here, too, though, and for that I have no excuse.

Edit: But don't worry about my health problems, btw. CFS doesn't kill people. :D If I don't post, I'm just trying to be a serious wannabe author.

Edit edit: Better get to bed. I've been up far too late trying to edit my work. Again, sorry, everyone.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Well my goodness, you have nothing to apologize for, Leisha. We are just happy to hear that you are doing well, and that you and Seph are so busy with your writing. That is excellent news!

(This thread appears to have magical qualities. We say, where is Culhwch and he appears very soon after. We say where are Leish and Sephiroth, and lo, Leisha reports in for the first time in weeks.

Now what do we want to ask for ...)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Say, I haven't seen that fifty million dollars around for quite awhile, I wonder where it could have gotten to?

Good to hear you are well, Leish, and great to hear you are so close to finishing your novel. Can't wait to buy one of the first copies when they arrive down here!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Wait, Chris, I must protest! I was the very last entry at nearly the very last minute in April, and I was not particularly on topic, but I was indeed there! I want my perfect attendance award! (On the other hand, the last one of those I received was a puppy, so let me think about that for a while.)

I hadn't actually made a chart of those statistics, but that doesn't mean I wasn't mad enough to do it, just that I hadn't gotten around to the madness yet. :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I echo Leisha's sentiments. I'm terribly sorry if we had you worried, but also very touched that you care enough to worry. Consider us chastised, we both feel really bad for not checking in. :)

I mentioned before that this challenge helped me to get back into writing after the troubles I've had this year, and writing is exactly what I've been doing. Before I got ill in January, I promised myself that this year I would endeavour to sell some stories. In the latter part of 2009, I made a decision to shelf my series of novels for the time being, since I was fed up rewriting them, and felt I could use some time away (in order that I could later return with a fresh eye).

So I turned my hand to short fiction. By the end of the year, I had written one short story (literary/SF) and one novelette (mythic fantasy) -- the responses to which encouraged me that with a little reworking, I might be able to place them both in pro markets. And then the neuralgia struck.

In the past month, since returning from holiday, I have written another novelette (dark fantasy), and am currently a little over halfway through a short cyberpunk novella. When I have not been writing, much of my spare time has been taken up with reading or editing work for members of my crit group.

I've been aware of the approaching deadline for this month's contest, and have remained committed to posting a story, but I hadn't got 'round to writing one yet, and now I have one day (?) left. I would be sorry not to enter, and although I have a busy day tomorrow (it's my sister's birthday), I may try to knock something up. Even assuming that I succeed, I can't promise it'll be up to standard, mind you.

Either way, I'll still be voting for my favourite story, of course.

Incidentally, I second what Leisha says about not worrying. My health problem is equally non-threatening -- more so, in fact -- and I would hate for any of you to be unduly concerned. I really do appreciate the kind thoughts, however.

Now, I really ought to get to bed, too, or I'll have no chance of writing a story tomorrow....

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

No, no, no reason to feel chastised. It's not like you have an obligation to check in with us here. I think the deadline makes us a little more aware of who is around and who isn't, and from there ... well, some of us are just natural worriers. Not your fault.

I am so, so glad that you are both making such progress with your writing! That is fantastic news.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I'm jealous that you have a little granddaughter. Not that I would trade either of my grandsons, but it would be nice if they had a cousin. (I, too, like the red shoes.)

Actually I have 2 granddaughters to go with my grandson. She's still less than a year old. I'll try not to hijack this thread any more. But I claim a gray grandpa moment.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

My word! The bar just keeps on raising, doesn't it?

Just a thought; would it be possible and practical to award a symbol--a star, medal, or (best yet, from my classically-addled viewpoint) laurels to the profile of anyone who wins the competition? From an aspiring writer's viewpoint/CV, it couldn't harm and, speaking as a non-winner, I certainly wouldn't begrudge anyone having one.

Parson- Ahhhh... Hijack quite acceptable.

If you could arrange for my "Sanitav 3000" chair to be delivered; you know the one with the extending intravenous drip stands built in. That would be dandy.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Now what happened to TEIN's "Sanitav 3000" chair — the one with the extending intravenous drip stands built in? It was here a few weeks ago, but I haven't seen it since.

That is a very nice idea J-WO, but I'm not sure about the logistics of accomplishing that, because it would surely involve something done by an admin, and we've never managed to get Brian interested in the Challenge, not so that I have noticed anyway.

Maybe we could discuss some different ways to bring a little more attention to the winning stories/writers.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Oh, look: J-WO's got a laurel eye....

(Does that make him a rock star...?)
