Discussing the Writing Challenges -- November and December 2010

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I don't think it's things the search effect works on, but people. A sort of extension of the 'racial subchronscious', or quantum entanglement (or fairly sympathetic magic, for that matter; any two cronsciousnesses that have once been in chrontact never entirely separate). And it's not your ears that burn when somebody's talking about you, but your typing fingers that itch.

I know I thought of posting remote birthday wishes for Rane Longfox recently; perhaps I should have done. Or just wonder on the screen what happened to Redhawk (is there a button you check so that when your name is taken in vain you are sent an E-mail perhaps, that I've never found?) or Cloud's Granny, or whoever, and the prodigal offspring will just log on, by chance (to be pushed to provide seventy-five words of the latest subject or, if he, she or it is really lucky, a vote.)

But I don't remember ever having a member called 'thirty million dollars, and if that nice person – who was it? – from the Gates foundation would like to log on with some unusable funds they would like to place for the advancement of humanity I'm sure such an imaginitive group of individuals could come up with some projects…

And, thinking of birthdays, there are a couple of very important ones to be celebrated.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

...think this is correct, but there might be further oversights.

I'm not in there Chrispy  I go to all the trauma of exposing myself to collective ridicule and you don't even notice! :D

(Actually, I'm a little worried about Leish and Seph, who have been quiet for so long. I hope that both are well.)

I, too, had been noticing their absence and am very glad to see them both still alive and kicking!

Maybe we could discuss some different ways to bring a little more attention to the winning stories/writers.

How about a Sticky thread that no one but mods and admin can post into and they put the winning entry in each month. I had thought of suggesting something similar for the photo challenge. (actually it might be nice to but the top two posts in maybe)

already gone ver said:

I didn't notice much ridicule, collective or individual, did you?

And until the voting is finished the cat is safe inside the box, in a comfortable state of perhapsness.

Sorry; if I could just find a neater way of organising things (a spreadsheet, descendant of my voting list, was considered, but rejected in favour of the pdf solution as everyone could read it. I'm useless with these electronic brain thingies; where's the slot to stick the punch cards in, anyway?) But your name is now in my document; will you excuse me if I don't upload it with every update?

I think this is a great idea.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

:D Ah Chrispy, but I have a vivid imagination when it comes to collective ridicule :p

And of course I'm not really worried just thought you ought to get your important chronicling (??) of the chrons correct!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Ah well. Didn't manage to fit in about the memory wiping, and I didn't spend long on it since I want to be doing my novel, but still. I had a go this month, and that's made me feel good. Sorry I seem to have copied Mouse in the centring of the piece - I couldn't get it to look okay left aligned, because the text was so massive at the start, then so tiny toward the end... Only centring it made it look decent.

And Chrispy. Thank you for all the hard work you've put (and will put) in on my novel. You've made this Loopy Cat very happy:

See? (That is her being happy, I assure you. ;))

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Oh, blimey. I get Seph posting after me. That's a horrid thing, to have such poetic eloquence showing up my simple words..........:eek::eek:

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

No, no, no reason to feel chastised. It's not like you have an obligation to check in with us here. I think the deadline makes us a little more aware of who is around and who isn't, and from there ... well, some of us are just natural worriers. Not your fault.

I am so, so glad that you are both making such progress with your writing! That is fantastic news.

Chastised by ourselves, then, because we like being here, and we appreciate having friends who care about us. :)

And thank you! It feels great to be writing again, I must say.

I had a short window, today, in which to produce a story, and I'm pleased to say I was able to come up with something, hurried though it may be. Looks like Leish had the same idea -- we must have been working on our stories at the same time, and didn't even know it! :D

And Leish, I really like your story -- I love its theme and scope, and the phrasing (so, less of the 'simple words', okay? ;)). And you know what is interesting? It looks like an arrow (as in, the arrow of time). Heh. Now, I know you didn't mean that, because you've just said it. And I know you wouldn't have done it deliberately, because you'd have felt that was copying. But it's kinda cool, nonetheless.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Yes, I thought it was great that we'd been working on stories at the same time without knowing. :D

I only took about 20 mins, though, and yours would have been far longer.

And I wrote the story in Word, saw how bad the left alignment looked, and centred it - then realised it looked almost like the alien head from the film Independence Day (I love that film!), so I played around with the font, indentation, font size, and paragraphs in the post box here, so at least it would have a nice shape. I prefer "arrow of time", though. :D

I've just been reading about a certain nymph of the hazel and walnut tree. ;)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

No, twenty minutes is about right. I started mine around half past two. We really were synchronised to a spooky degree. :)

I don't remember the alien head from Independence Day. I'll have to look that up.

Oh, have you, now? ;)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

We're approaching a half-century of entries.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Ah, those aliens. I remember, now. I suppose your story is shaped like their heads, yes.

Ursa, I can't imagine Atlas was happy about someone writing graffiti on his ball. What do you suppose his reaction was? ;p

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Whoa! That guy was dedicated! The petrol he must have used, and the man hours.............

And, well, I was never going to form my story into a shape - I just wanted it not to look weird left aligned. But once I saw the head I played with it, cos I love ID. I'm just glad it didn't looked as bad as left aligned. And centred text always looks nicest...

I shouldn't worry, yours is better anyway. :)

(What you should be apologising for is that scary-ass cat picture!:p)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Loopy-Kit scary? (The lovely creature doesn't even seem to have a mouth, and there's not a single claw in sight.)

(That's the highest resolution picture of Loopy-Kit yet posted. Thanks, L-K.)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

It's a touching sentiment but... why not a better author? My opinion of course

Guess he didn't want too many letters :p

I mean if he wanted to put out the message "look at me, I'm deep and philosophical he coulda done "Read Fyodor Dostoyevsky", but that would have made him cry for sure...

Thank you, Mouse! I really didn't want to step on your toes. So if everyone could not look at the centring and just concentrate on the text itself when they re-read the entries... :) But with all the praise you were getting in here for your entry, you can hardly say mine's better. See? ^_^

And thank you for the welcome back, DFM. It's nice to have been missed this much. This really is the best online place for friendliness.

And, Ursa, you liked the large Loopy Kit? Heh. Don't tell me that........
