Have you read River Gods by McDonald ? I hope its good im reading next to try this author.
This was my first, I'm afraid. Not sure if my library or bookstore even got any others.

EDIT: Uh, quick search shows the library happens to have just that one: River of Gods.

Heh i was hoping you could confirm i choosed one of his better books and not one of his weaker ones. Thats always the risk when you try a new author and decide if he is for you or not.

Starting K. J. Parker's The Fencer Trilogy. The first book in Colours in The Steel. A rather strange system of law.
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the book. I readThe Company and liked it so much I bought the Scavenger books. I enjoyed them too, and have the Engineer trilogy and The Folding Knife in my to-be-read pile.

So far, I'm enjoying it very much. I'll let you know when I finish the whole trilogy how I liked it.

I am currently reading Jack McDevitt. I had read his more famous stuff -- It was good stuff "Engines of God," "Deep Six," and "Chindi" (the first 3 Paula Hutchins Novels). Then on a trip that I couldn't find anything I read "Devil's Eye" the third "Alex Benedict" Novel. I liked that better and picked up "A Talent for War" the first "Alex Benedict" novel. All I can say is "Ahhh! This is great SF for me!" I can't wait to read "Polaris" the second "Alex Benedict" novel. It sitting right beside me. Will I do my yard work or start the novel? Hmmm?

Priscilla Hutchins, thank you very much. :p

I've read the first four in that series but haven't started any of the Alex Benedict books yet. I may do so sooner now. I've also heard good things about Eternity Road from my wife.

I just read Total Oblivion, more or less by Alan DeNiro. Post apocalypse with a Mark Twain-like setting.

Okay, Ding Dong, I'm dumb. How do I look at Priscilla and write Paula? Also as I look I note that Devil's Eye is the Fourth book in the series and I've already read Seeker, the actual third book in the series. I've got to get more sleep so I'm sharper (or something:eek:)

Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie - and I'm loving it!

I'm reading that now too. I haven't been able to make as much progress as I'd like, and at first I was feeling a bit disappointed (probably because it doesn't really stack up to First Law), but it's really growing on me and I'm getting hooked!

soulsinging - yes the further I've got the better it's becoming, so high hopes now and I've read reports that overall it's his best piece of work so far.

Just finished Beyond the Wall of Time by Russell Kirkpatrick. The third book in the Broken Man trilogy. I have to say I am well impressed by these books; the world he has created is novel (which on its own I find refreshing in the Fantasy genre) with intricate and believable relationships between his characters and also between the humans and the Gods. There is a lovely line:

"What sort of God are you?...."

"I am a reluctant god" he said.

I rarely read books twice, I generally just don't have the desire to. But having seen the characters develop and change throughout the trilogy, I am certain I will go back and read them all again just to see them again with my now fuller understanding of what make them tick. As I finished the last book I almost wanted to re-read them immediately. A feeling I have almost never had!

Next it's back to SF for a while - continue/finish Reynolds' Revelation Space or maybe another Asher book.

Then you will want to read the original Fire Of Heaven trilogy no doubt. That's the one I read and whilst I liked it I didn't think it was anything remarkable. Then again, I have not read that newer trilogy, so perhaps it's reflective of the author's growing skill as a writer.

I'm enjoying the Vlad Taltos adventures. I'm currently on Yendi. I like the length of the books - short enough to read in a day - and they are self contained. Your enjoyment doesn't hinge on finding the next book in the series to resolve a cliff hanger.

Yes I think I will have to. When I started this series I didn't realise that it actually followed on from an earlier series :(. However I am now a little apprehensive; I generally try to read an author in more or less the order they have published. Sometimes when I have gone from their later books to their earlier ones I have found myself disappointed - due probably to the inevitable lesser experience when writing the earlier books. But I still think I will have to - just not yet - got so many series on the go at the moment that I'm losing track  daren't add another one! I think I shall probably aim to read that series followed by the second series together sometime in the future.

I just started Eoin Colfer's "and Another Thing". Seems OK, so far and Eoin appears to have mimiced Douglas Adams style. Still, early days yet.
