Would you allow your 75 word stories to be published in an anthology

For Nixie's benefit then, I'll just make a small observation on the importance of editing. This is a quote from one of the Dune sequels (which are littered with a shocking amount of typos):

"Angry murmers began to arise in the centre of the thong." :D

Clearly, it's meant to be throng.

Are you sure the text wasn't referring to Australian sole music...?

*cough*

Heh heh...well, strictly by chance...I found myself talking to a bigtime editor(SFF editor that you all know by name) t'other day...and I chanced to mention the challenge... just casually... and the response was: ' Sounds like a lot of work for no pay. At this stage of my career..." and so forth. As one would expect. Dang it.

Heh heh. On t'other hand- it's interesting to note that highly succesful people.. ones we may assume are resting on laurels or just soaking up tropical sun for the rest of their days- are still looking for paying work.

Those Beatle guys could really write.
- yea, yea, yea.

Just to be a stick in the mud, I voted no.

This thread will serve as my generic rejection letter to publishers interested in any of my 75 word stories. Take that literary industry! Detah! Detah to you, I say!

(I'm kidding... my share of any profits goes to charity)

It's just discussion. Anything that actually happens would be a bonus for everyone.
An eBook with all proceeds to save the Garden Slender Salamanders or any other good cause, would be fine with everyone who isn't a super-crab.

And on the 30th Day of March 2011 the thread rose again from the depths. :) (hopefully)

We have now completed our first year of stories, and I for one would still like to see them (all 570 of them) collated in an anthology. I have just read through the previous 68 posts and it looks like there was much agreement on what was to be done, but no one willing to move it forward.
I have had an idea about editing, it will take a bit of work but I think it will be fairly easy (only some sections may prove tricky) the idea is to create a wiki within which to edit/proofread our stories.

If I create a wiki and on it I post all the 570 stories as a different page, then by using some clever password trickery only Chrons members (supplied with the password or even possibly using their chrons passwords/usernames) can access the site and edit the pages, the idea being that we can all proofread and edit our own stories and those of our fellow chrons but also that those with a deeper understanding of the English language and its grammar peculiarities could set bits straight, each edit could then be approved by the Author (again through chrons passwords/usernames) and eventually we would (hopefully) have 570 stories that are proofread, edited and ready for publication.
There could be a simple setting that each author can do to allow their work to be published so any that don't want to be published aren't and those that have dropped off chrons radar and don't folllow it wont give permission and so are left off.

Once it is all edited and the wiki has settled down we could look into the actual publishing, this way there is no single editor that puts his/her name to the anthology or edits stories beyond their 75 words (as this limit must be kept to) or cuts out stories they don't like/understand, and also the work load is spread between the 148 of us that entered throughout the year.

As a computer techie I should be able to create the wiki, I'm not sure about the password section, I doubt Brian would supply me with all the passwords, but I'm sure some kind of work around can be found, and then the process is left up to us the chrons 75 word story entrants.

So what do people think, shall I try and create the wiki? Are people still interested in this project? Am I talking to myself?

Sounds good to me apart from the user name and password thing.

Couldn't some envelope where we all had to register again be possible.

This would then get over the permission problems as by registering you agree to publishing may hap.

Just a thought.

I hadn't realised a wiki was a generally available tool that could be used in this way. But now you mention it, it makes sense.

I like the idea. I just read through the entire thread (today being the first time I saw it), and the questions and objections raised are definitely something to think about. Granted, I know next to nothing about the business side of writing, but I think the idea of a wiki is great. Maybe separate them by theme, and each of us could share the workload of editing. Of course, this would take some time, but I think it's a safe bet that most (if not all) of us would be willing to pitch in. Then when the time comes, we can look at publishing. I don't think anyone would argue with any profits going to charity. All in all, I think it's a nice idea, and if we could work out a way to make it happen, without costing anyone an arm and a leg, of course, we should go for it.

Ok, I have found a site that will host a free wiki and it looks as though it will allow invites only (sometimes these things hide the truth from you until you have registered, so it might prove that they don't offer that service on the free wikis) which means I can invite all those that took part in the competition (all 147 of you) to join the site and then let them login/edit pages as required.
I'm sure I can create it and keep it simple enough so that anyone can find their own stories, or any by a certain chrons member or even by a specific month.
I am ready to go ahead with this, but I haven't had permission from everyone and I think it might be best if I do get permission first, I wouldn't want anyone complaining that I have reproduced their work somewhere else without their permission.
So I will speak to the mods to check on permissions from the chrons itself, and then I'll PM/e-mail you all to ask for your permission to do this, hopefully that will cover my bottom sufficiently for this to get going.

And then I'll keep you all updated.

Moonbat, I am in awe of your willingness to volunteer for a project that promises to cost you hours of your time without any pay back but gratitude.

Thanks!

You are very welcome, but don't be so quick to assume I get nothing from this.
I am looking forward to testing my IT skills, any practice at making a viable wiki will be useful in my professional life, and my secret wish is to have an anthology on my bookshelf that I am part of, so it isn't as noble as you might think. :)

I'm willing to help in any way you need. I've been bit by the bug of wanting to make an anthology of the challenge stories myself, several times since it all started, but the difficulties of getting permissions and not losing stories whose authors aren't around anymore keep getting me down.

I do have all of the stories in one document, if that would help in any way.

And of course, it goes without saying but I'll say it for the record anyway, you're welcome to include my own stories. :)

Bad news guys and gals :(

I have spoken to I Brian and, unfortunately, he feels my idea of creating an off site (non-chronicles) Wiki to edit the stories would possibly infringe on the Chronicles copywrite/data protection requirements.
So, unfortunately, the Editing Wiki is off.

Brian has said that he is working on something within Chronicles that might assist with our hope to edit and publish these stories, so hopefully we will be able to do something in the coming months.

Sorry it didn't pan out, but lets keep the dream alive. :)
