I would say if you are watching the show, and haven't read the books but are thinking of it...wait to read them. I recommend watching the first season through and then picking up the books. But I would say don't try to read and watch at the same time, it might be more harmful than helpful.
And if you are just enjoying the show with no intention of reading the books, then by all means continue to do so. (I think you're missing out on the books, but I know they aren't everyones cup of tea.)
Finally got around to watching the first episode. I'd just like to comment the choice of Sean Bean as Ned Stark was surprising in a way that I saw it coming... a little.
(spoiler in white)
If you gather I was watching the LOTR films when I was reading the ASOIAF novels...
And the actress playing Cersei was pretty much who I had in mind as well. I hope to get my hands on the second episode soon, because the first is always a bit of an overly stuffed appetizer when it comes to character-introduction.
I read the first two books in this series a lot of years ago and wasnt really taken with it to be honest
But I thought I would give the TV series a try, Ive just had chance to see Ep1.. it started well, then it slows right down - just like I remember the book doing
I will watch the next episode, but it will have to pick up to keep me watching
Have you read the books? Because I think it helps a lot if you have read the books because then I think you could relate to the characters much better then if you never have read the books.
If you like to read I would suggest getting the books either at your local library or buy them and then check the series again...
All in all, I rather enjoyed it - the sets are fantastic, the locations are brilliant and the acting is good. That said, I must agree with others who have pointed out that anyone not familiar with the books will be totally lost.
Speaking of location, I'd be damned if I don't watch it since some scenes were shot on the islands of Malta and Gozo - "The city of Mdina was used for scenes in King's Landing, and filming also took place at Fort Manoel (representing the Sept of Baelor), at the Azure Window on the island of Gozo (the Dothraki wedding site), and at San Anton Palace, Fort Ricasoli, Fort St Angelo and St. Dominic monastery (all used for scenes in the Red Keep)." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_Thrones
And yep, as one who didn't read the book, it took me some concentration to figure out and remembering who's who and what and who's whose what, and the names. The positive side is: I'm now very interested in reading the books in the near future.
